:-/ the bottom line is-they are your toys and you can play with them however you want to... :-)

No argument there. But the real issue here is how to refer to them on Eurobricks ;-)

In most fantasy literature (most notably LOTR) trolls are essentially described as big oversized brutes, whereas orcs are depicted as being roughly human sized. Not only that, "orc & troll" are just easier to say or type than "troll warrior & giant troll". So I completely agree with Batbrick on all accounts... even the fourth one this time! :-D

P.S. Seeing which way the poll is going, I'd say most agree with Batbrick and myself.

I'm adding you to my best friends list! *y* Especially since you agreed on my controversial fourth point! :-D

But yes, orc, does in all accounts, fit. Does this poll decide how we shall call them from now on?

You're welcome to ;-) And yes, I believe that was the intent of this thread X-D

They are goblins, I don't care what Lego or anyone says. I have read ooodles of fantasy, played wargaming and several variants of role playing (never as nurse so don't ask), and goblins is the logical answer. Troll warriors is such a namby pamby name that means nothing.

Orcs are largely (but not only) a Tolkien creation, so they can't be that either. As for Ogre, that is an option depending on interpretation, but it is hard to treat Ogres seriously after Shrek! :-D I would however go for Ogre as a second option. But guys, call them what ever you want. If you don't care about being wrong that is! :-|

I agree with you Asuka :)

Ork is best term, in my opinion, to mane a more or less human-size creature...

troll is something big (and usually stupid ;))

Had to go with Orcs... I like trolls, but I see the bigger one as a troll; orcs tend to be more human sized in my mind, so minifig orcs should be minifig sized. Trolls on the other hand tend to be taller than humans (again this all in my head), so therefore minifig trolls should be bigger than minifigs.

If we're talking Lotr here, which I think is relevant givin the appearance of the set (aquire the license already lego |-/ ) the smaller ones would be orcs and the larger would be a troll.

Think of in Lotr:Fotr in the tomb in the Mines of Moria and the fellowship got attacked.

The large blue-grey one was a cave troll all the others were orcs.

While the word goblin in lotr was not generally used there were a few tribes of goblins.

The group that assisted the Uruk-hai in transporting Merry and Pippin to Saruman before eventually fighting between themselves were refered to as goblins in the book.

It seems that goblins lived in the woods to the north and did not generally come out to play.

They were smaller and weaker than orcs and their tribes weren't as numerous.

Because I'm going to be using these type of sets and minifigs for my upcoming Lotr mocs, they will be orcs for my purposes.

Also in my opinion TLG used the term troll to make a distinction between them and other Lotr products seeing as they dont have the license. (yet) ;-)

i think our perception of the green men has been poison influenced by tolkien's LOTR and D&D. orcs are human size, trolls are large. goblins are imps. pixies are small, elves are taller, dwarves are shorter.

there are other fantasy, fairy tales, folk lores that picture trolls as small and hunched but the general view is that trolls are large like giants. something that even shrek couldn't yet defeat. maybe when the current generation grows up, they may be influenced by shrek and green humanoids will then be known as ogre. :-P

i think for consistency, it's better to just stick to lego given names: trolls and giant trolls. :-P otherwise as time goes on, we're going to have hard time trying to keep up with who's who.

i hope to see cyclops or two-headed ettins for castle 2009!!!! gogo cyclops! :-P

Thats a great point. As much as I'll want (and try) to call them Orcs, it won't matter... however they're listed on Bricklink is what will actually stick. :-/

Personally I imagine them to be my customers at work as they whine about their credit cards. Ugly, stupid creatures with one thing on their mind and unable to grasp simple concepts such as "regular payments."

I have to agree with the Tolkien theory. (TLG cant get the license, Games Workshop has I believe, and TLG would go into debt to get it off them, they have NO DEBT.) When are the Lego Elves going to appear? We've got the army of the Undead, Dwarfs, Humans, Orc's/Goblins/Trolls, its only a matter of time really. So lets call the Green jerks Orc's and be done with it already, because in the end, on mass opinion, that's what they are. And we live in a Democratic World after all. Apparently...

POLITICS ON

Well I don't care about video games :-P , but I have read LOTR and seen the movies (which I love) and I definitely see the small ones as orcs and the big ones as trolls. I just can't imagine the small ones being trolls because trolls are huge, sometimes fat, and stupid. And ogres I just see as Shrek. Goblins I don't mind them being called as, except the big (he's definitely not a goblin).

I can't take the little ones seriously as trolls, so if we're stuck with that, they'll henceforth be referred to as "baby trolls" by me. Or maybe midget trolls. Troll-ettes. Trollops! YES! Let's give them all lipstick and they can be slutty female trolls! We always complain about not getting enough female minifigs ... X-D

I got it! We dont need to have a debate at all! We'll just call them GOOTs an acronym for ( Goblins, Orcs, Ogres and Troll wariors). I think these guys are lemmings myself. I have to say this topic is rather silly. It reminds me of that episode of Southpark Go God Go where the atheist factions are at war with eachother over what atheists should call themselves. Anyone seen it? I think GOOTs is a good solution to this "problem" though.
