Franco Clarke Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 Hello pirates, I would like to show you my boat. So far, she doesn't have a real name, just going by the term 'my little boaty'. As for what class of ship she is, I felt she was in-between a frigate and a brig, thus she will be a brigate. As for technical points, she has 3 hull sections, 2 masts, 14 large cannons and 4 smaller ones. She was primarily designed with strength in mind, hence her rather heavy appearance. This photograph was the best one I currently have to hand, but it shows the ship in bluecoat hands rather than the more usual redcoats. I will attempt to take some better photos tomorrow. Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 Looks pretty nice from what we can see. Any chance we can get more pictures? Also, the ship classification refers more to the rigging than the size of the hull. Here's the reference I always use: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23991 From what I can see of the rigging, she does indeed appear to be a brig. I can't tell if you've got a gaff on her or not, though. Either way, she appears to be quite nice, and it's great to see another one for the bluecoats! I hope to see more pictures in the near future :-) Quote
kurigan Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 (edited) Well she's a fine looking brig and a brig she is. No need for a new classification. Two masts square rigged makes a brig and her armament is fairly typical for brigs. Though a full stern gallery and spar deck on a brig is less and less common the later in history you go they are not uncommon. Why Sophie/Speedy was a 14 gun quarter deck brig. So be proud of her as a brig, nothing wrong with sloops/unrated vessels. Though I sided with the reds in the last tournament it's always nice to see the original Lego sailors get a new ship to play with. I always found the Blue Coat flag reminiscent of the Bourbon flag, so perhaps she's French? If so you could always call her a corvette if she had a few more guns. If you want some suggestions or advice just ask. Other wise, thanks for sharing! Edited December 25, 2015 by kurigan Quote
blackdeathgr Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 A nice ship with a good color pattern and a sturdy look! As a bluecoat, i rest safe with ships like that protecting our seas. Give us more pictures when able! Quote
Captain Dee Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 You've built yourself a fine looking brig. She looks really nice from this angle and the colorscheme is good. It's cool to see so many classic bluecoats as well. If you need a name I would suggest some variation of "Brigitte" or "Bridgette" unless that's too feminine for you! I look forward to seeing more pics if you can get them. Good work. Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I'd also like to add that I like the fact that you used the Lego rope ladders for this. I do the same on my ships, because I think they should retain some semblance of playability. Also a minor tip, the new Lego bluecoat flags are the same as the old, except that they have a gold trim on them that looks great. It might be worth your time to check them out :-) Quote
Staslegomaster Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 That's a super bluecoats ship! Such a pity we can't have a full view of her so far. So today my question is: Is that the Imperial trading post of bluecoats, 1989? - any LEGO pirate fan's dream!!! Quote
papillion Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 That's a super bluecoats ship! Such a pity we can't have a full view of her so far. So today my question is: Is that the Imperial trading post of bluecoats, 1989? - any LEGO pirate fan's dream!!! First of all, the "Trading post" belong to the redcoats. Second, that is the "Eldorado Fortress" in the background, and that my friend belong to what you refer to, the bluecoats :) Quote
Franco Clarke Posted December 26, 2015 Author Posted December 26, 2015 (edited) Thank you for all your kind replies, I think some of you might have been confused by the picture, because the ship is actually normally sailed by the enemy, the filthy redcoats! (don't worry the bluecoats are due to be getting a ship, larger than this one) Hence I present some up to date photographs, which are hopefully a bit better. Firstly a generic shot of her. The masts were too tall to fit into my backdrop, thus they are not in any of the pictures. They're pretty standard so you're not missing anything. Next a view down the length from the prow, and the anchors and small cannons can be seen. Next a shot of the broadside, showing the 7 guns, and also a better view of the deck. The stern view again, this time from the other side. The stern is most certainly my favourite part of the ship. A view from above down onto the deck, showing the dinghy, bell and wheel. The opposite side, without the guns run out, and with the ladder down. Finally the interior, just a very cramped gun deck. I know that real ships from this era wouldn't have had such a cramped gun deck, but I wanted a ship that 'beat' my friend's Imperial flagship, which meant stuffing as many guns as possible into the gun deck. When comparing my boat with said flagship I was surprised that, despite having less hull sections, my ship felt just as big, perhaps due to the taller masts. Cousarmy0001 Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Well, now that I know it's a redcoat ship, I don't like it as much :-P I know what you mean about the hull sections, though. However, you'd also be surprised by how much adding just one section will change the appearance of the ship. When I premiered my Thunderchild, it was described on the Classic Pirates blog as "small but impressive". Since then, I added just one hull section, taking it from a 14-gun frigate with four middle sections to an 18-gun frigate with five, and it feels like I added at least two (which, incidentally, was the original plan). I also designed her with the intention of wiping the floor with Imperial Flagships in mind. I've currently got two of those, which were certainly more than a match for the pair of 6-gun brigs my bluecoats were fielding at the time. Her arrival certainly changed the balance of power in the region! Quote
Staslegomaster Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 I like the additional pictures very much. But why are there no sails? First of all, the "Trading post" belong to the redcoats. Second, that is the "Eldorado Fortress" in the background, and that my friend belong to what you refer to, the bluecoats :) Thanks for your explanations. The more we learn, the more we know. I was confused because the both sets have the samy rocky base plate. And the red fort is called Port Royale in Russia. As for Eldorado (LEGOrado) it is a western fort of 1997. They were re- issued from 2001 to 2009. Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 I like the additional pictures very much. But why are there no sails? Because the redcoats forgot them Quote
Franco Clarke Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 Well, now that I know it's a redcoat ship, I don't like it as much :-P Haha, indeed that was the reason why she ended up being redcoat, because there were some points of her which I didn't like, hence she became the redcoat's home. I'm working on a bluecoat ship that should outdo this one, and at least look a little better Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 I'm looking forward to her! If I may make a bit of a suggestion, based off of personal experience, for the next ship? In my opinion, it really makes a ship pop if you add a just a bit of color to the hull- and it can be rather simple to accomplish as well. With this ship, for instance, you could make the thin white stripe above the gunports a color other than white or black (red, perhaps, since it's a redcoat ship), and then make the gunports a different color as well. There's a plethora of flag colors available, if you choose to do that with your next ship, it should be easy to do. I recommend against red for the gunports, though, because historically, Lego sets have had red gunports for pirate ships. Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Looks like a fine vessel - well done! Quote
dr_spock Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Nice ship. Looks better flying the Redcoat flag. Quote
Maxim I Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Really congratz on the first picture!!! It is taken perfectly! I like the ship very much, the use of white slopes fits the ship really good :D Quote
Franco Clarke Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Thank you for all your kind compliments, its nice to feel welcome here. The first photograph does indeed show the ship from her best angle, since it masks the stockiness a little. I am planning to make the next ship a little more colourful, mostly around the stern and prow. Hopefully that will also help to contrast with the more monotone redcoat ship. I guess time will tell! Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 I like stocky in a ship. Makes it feel solid. Quote
Plaid Beard Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Lots of cannons! Looks like that ship will be able to demolish anything it comes up against. Well done ship - thank you for sharing it with us! Quote
Franco Clarke Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 Thanks, she is well-armed for her size, I always like to pack guns into a ship- there's no award for most under-gunned ship! Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Thanks, she is well-armed for her size, I always like to pack guns into a ship- there's no award for most under-gunned ship! I've always looked at it as, "the more space the gun crews have to work, the faster their rate of fire". Quote
