In November of 2013 I built a biped with a single motor using only parts from the Lego Mindstorms 31313 set.  It walks and turns when it detects an obstacle.

Turning is achieved by throwing the walker off balance (motor spins fast for 180 degrees and then slow for the next 180 degrees). This makes one foot slide and the other have traction.  It works great on slippery surfaces like wood floors, but I did not test it on carpet.

In January of 2017, Mindstorms Boards user "myibookmoe" made photo instructions, which I am hosting with his permission.

The program for the biped can be downloaded here.

42061 C-Model - Helicopter

The focus of this build was rigidity, functions were secondary.

Instructions: http://instructions.busterhaus.com/42061_C_Model.pdf

Functions:

  • Main rotor and tail rotor are linked.
  • Bucket can be tipped using a linear actuator.
  • Opening roof can be used to lock main rotor in place, allowing ejection seats (not included)

Very nice! I will build it and check the rigidity .

The building techniques you used in the Hammerhead really stuck with me - Pythagoras triangles, connectors attached to angled beams, etc.  Building with triangles is a very fun process, and the results look good and are strong.  I've been designing a car for the past few weeks using the same building method and decided to apply it to this C-Model as well.

Broke my wrist.  Typing is not easy so I built a rolling platform to support my arm.  Version 1 works ok, I have some ideas on how to improve it.

The big turntables don't work as well as expected.

The large tires on top can sit in a few different positions (x and y) which allows some adjustment on the height of the cast.

Let's hope images from Twitter work.

How? Hope you get better soon! Btw, that is very smart use of legos for the situation.

Coaching ice hockey. I think i showed the kids what NOT to do.  The cast will be on for 6 to 8 weeks, so it's not exactly a speedy recovery, which is why I spent a bit of time tonight coming up with something that will make my life easier for that period.

Ok, we're the kids like "yup, that's how you do it"? Anyway, hope you find a way around the cast, (ldd, ldpub)

(Btw, when I got a second concussion, I would wait till no one was around, and quietly build. even though I shouldn't.)

@BusterHausCan You tell me how to make instructions too look like Yours? Is there any program to make those?

Here is my process:

  1. Build model in LDCad (you can use MLCad or any other software that supports .mpd/.ldr files.  Use submodels as much as possible.
  2. Add building steps and view rotations to the model in LDCad
  3. Open the model in LPub3D, correct steps and view rotations in LDCad
  4. Do the instructions layout in LPub3D (columns, multiple steps per page, parts list, callouts, etc)
  5. Export from LPub3D as PDF

Cover page

  1. Open the model in LDview, export POV-Ray file
  2. Open POV-Ray file in POV-Ray, adjust the render settings, render image
  3. Insert rendered image into PowerPoint file, adjust text, print pages as PDF (cover page & notes).  You can use a photograph of the model instead of the rendered image.
  4. Merge cover pages PDF with instruction PDF

I suggest using this tutorial for POV-Ray rendering:

All the software I mentioned is available at http://www.ldraw.org/news/37/15/LDraw-All-In-One-Installer-2016-01-now-available.html as an all-in-one installer.

You should also get familiar with this sub-forum, as it contains a LOT of useful information:

https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/forum/128-lego-digital-designer-and-other-digital-tools/

Edit: you can download the files I used to create the instructions for the 42061 C model.

16 Cylinder Engine

Cylinders are not offset, so it's not really a W engine, but it works rather well.  Single crankshaft, and you can add extra cams to play with the piston timing.

LDR model is here.
