Hello, I am ez3141, and I am (evidently) new to Eurobricks. I am also quite new to the whole Technic system, which I only started to get into a few weeks ago. Recently I got the 42029 Customized Pickup Truck, which I added full Power Functions RC to, and also modified the front end a bit. Now, I am looking into converting it to a 4x4 model to be much better for off-roading.

So, I am looking for help from any Technic builders who are experienced with building 4x4 off-road vehicles as well as familiar with the setup of the set itself. I would like to know a couple of things:

What kind of specific pieces (sockets, connectors, joints, etc.) should I use to provide power to the front (steering) wheels? (I know how to for the back wheels, because they don't steer)

Also, should I continue just using 1 XL motor for drive, or would 2 XL motors put too much torque/strain on the pieces?

As well as just any other general tips when building/modifying these types of vehicles.

I am willing to give up the fake engine and the winch/tipping bed if it is necessary to move the motors to the front hood area.

G'day ex welcome to Eurobricks! To add 4x4 capabilities to this great set, the front end needs to be reworked. The parts that you need are CV joints (the grey parts in the rear suspension) and another differential. If you want to do serious off roading though a much heavier duty solition would be needed. Have fun and ask more questions if needed!

The same joints that power the rear can be used in front. BUT it all depends what you wanna do. If you just wanna drive outside over smaller bumps and sticks that should be fine. BUT if you wanna drive over rocks, steep hills, very rugged terrain I would suggest you to rebuild the truck with strong live axle suspension with portal hubs and bigger wheels.

I agree with Zblj if you want to crawl over big terrain you will need to change the suspension to live axle like in my crawler. Also I recommend buying Sariel's book since it is very informative for new technic builders.

You can make that truck 4x4, but it won't perform all that well due to the differentials, CV joints, and independent suspension.

If it were me, I would craft a 4-link live axle chassis and place that body on top of it, but then I would realize how heavy the body was and where I could remove weight and then I would re-evaluate the gear ratios I needed due to the new lower weight and on and on in a never ending cycle of change.

Sariel's book is great.... But you can learn so much just from the internet. Do a little research. Sites like rebrickable.com, brickshelf, and others are a big help. Or just google some pictures. Study them. Research them..... Lots to learn..... The Lego community is quite extensive.

Madoca built a 4x4 Truck and in his instructions you'll find how to achieve a driven front suspension. Scale is similar to 42029.

Yes they do - I've seen almost the whole PF range at various Lego stores. IIRC I can't remember seeing a rechargeable battery box or L-motor on the shelves, but it has been a while since I've been to a store. I should pay one a visit soon...

Yes, I agree with many of the previous comments. I had this set and I also considered 4x4ing it. Unfortunately, you will not be able to simply add the powered axle to the front wheels, you would probably have to completely rebuild the front suspension. If you are already going through the work of rebuilding the front suspension, you may as well reconfigure the entire truck to live axle suspension as seen here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=112037.
