Still depends on when they were supposed to be released. If they were part of a second wave, no matter how big or small a wave it was supposed to be, they were cancelled.

Are these Wave 2 sets? John Stafford revealed that they designed an entire second wave (which he claimed had a lot of awesome ideas) which got cut.

Where's that interview? I remember only the picture of them.

^ I'm sorry, I don't remember and I can't find it where I thought it was (although Brickipedia states the same thing about these sets without a source, I distinctly remember reading the article). He talked about how he got his job and his experiences designing sets as a designer vs. as a fan, including why certain parts raise the price of a set (old molds).

Wow, that looks pretty good. Does the red banner across the bottom have any indication towards its status as preliminary and/or cancelled? I notice the (eventually released) UFO one on the right doesn't sport that red strip.

That Seatron theme looks great, along with Europa. Holiday Village looks really bland to me, I can sorta see why that was canceled. Apparently a Star Wars set with Reek in it was going to come out but was canceled.

Wow, those Alien Conquest protos are really cool. Fairly sure that the Alien Queen is in the vehicle. Come to think of it, there could have been a second AQ wave planned for 2012 considering the random absence of Space sets for that year.

Does anyone know a good database of unreleased set photos other than Brikipedia?

For me that underwater monorail would have bought a few new part colours, the blue monorail track and supports, very cool. And to think, somewhere, those parts actually existed, they molded at least a few of them parts in blue to make the prototype set which they photographed. It's not like these sets in the pictures were digitally designed.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't just paint some regular monorail parts. That's quite normal in the LEGO design process, as far as I know.

While it is a pity, I can somehow understand why certain sets didn't make it. Europe, 18th century for example - that would have been the Pirates-theme without pirates basically The idea of a prohibition-era theme is quite hilarious too. Too good to have made it really!

About the Simpsons I remember 2 rumors

First there was a rumor of a whole wave of Simpsons sets

Then there was a rumor of the The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop 2DC set to be released this year

Alien Conquest wave 2 was cancelled for Monster Fighters, I think. TLG had too many action themes in the works and they had to dump something. Pity, really.

I think 1 or 2 cancelled AC sets looked very similar (with recolours) to eventual Galaxy Squad sets.

Never knew the Yavin 4 in the visual dictionary was going to be a real set, I always thought it was just a moc.

what a about 42051, a airport crash tender. It was planned to be released in first half of 2016 but it was canceled/shifted to 2017(don't know what it was) we have a picture of it.

As it's still a candidate for release, it may still be a preliminary and thus confidential picture.
