Posted January 4, 20169 yr Greetings, I'm trying to find the best/most accurate minifig scale tie fighter moc to date. I realize this is somewhat subjective, but so far I've settled on Jerac's version (here), though this is perhaps a slightly smaller than scale, and doesn't actually accept a minifig in the cockpit. It is an excellent moc however. Does anyone know of another of this quality? I would like to build one to go a long with my modded version of Imperialfleet's fantastic Vader's Tie Advanced. Suggestions?
January 4, 20169 yr I agree with you, Jerac's TIE-Fighter is my favorite one, too. I copied the idea of canopy from him and used it on TIE-Interceptor. I did the motor and the backside of the fighter to be more accurate thought, and for such a small craft also did the wing panels by three layers of plates instead of the way in the official TIE-fighter set. Have to say, I've been pretty happy with the interceptor. And this TIE-fighter is also worth to mention, even though I much prefer the Jerac's version, this includes a minifig. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128763488@N07/18900143900/in/photostream/lightbox/ -Samppu
January 4, 20169 yr Author I actually liked his original cockpit design, even though the final version is more accurate.
January 4, 20169 yr I'm pretty biased as this is my design (and now using the wing pylons from gavralcraw's TIE) but... I need to work on the inside of the wings for the line fighter though, as well as improve the TIE cockpit. I plan on using the base design of my current cockpit for when I build a TIE Advanced X1, the back will need quite a bit of changing though. Edited January 4, 20169 yr by Calanon
January 4, 20169 yr I don't think there is a definitive best version at the moment. Jerac's is great, but the lack of a cockpit is a deal breaker for me. The best thing you can probably do is to start from the Tie Advanced that you already have and work that into a standard tie fighter. That way the two ships will look good together.
January 5, 20169 yr I like the idea of merging (kit-bashing) the canopy pieces from the rather average Rebels TIE Advanced Prototype (75082) with the awesome TIE Fighter from 2012 (9492) while using the design of the very awesome First Order TIE Fighter (75101) as the basis. I have tried doing just this, but of course between the two donor sets there isn't enough pieces to complete it. I hope Lego gets to it very soon and updates LDD with the new parts from 2015/16 so that I can design something worthwhile.
January 5, 20169 yr I tried to mix the TIE Advanced Prototype and the older Vader's TIE 8017 sometime ago. Certainly not the best design compared to the above MOCs but this can give you few ideas. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=105781

January 5, 20169 yr I have to say I dont like the version with the huge rounded Slope-Pieces at all (Jeracs Version and similar), the proportions between the canopy and the surface make it look very strange and not accurate at all. I understand its the best way to get the front in the right shape, but it sacrifies a lot of the intimidating design thats created mainly by the canopy.
January 5, 20169 yr Author I agree. While his original version had some gaps around the widescreen I thought it looked excellent.

Yeah, Jerac may be my favorite Lego MOCer, but if something is going to be minifigure scale, I think it ought to fit minifigures. Interior space for minifigures can turn a cold, sterile model into something that it's easy to imagine living in.
January 5, 20169 yr I agree with you that in minifigure scale, there definetly should be a minifigure. I was worried if I could make enough room with the Interceptor, but eventually I did. With TIE-fighter the canopy might need to be a little bigger than when building in Jerac's style. I still think that Jerac's version is the best compromise anyway. -Samppu
