Puvel Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 As soon as the rumors about the Algus started to spread, the Hurn clan decided to rebuild their keep. Luckily the restoration of the outer wall was ready just in time for the first attack. by Puvel The Hurn, on Flickr Quote
Garmadon Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Awesome keep, Puvel, great job on the wall textures, and for some reason I really like the gold latices and flames there! Very nice landscaping as well - this is quite probably my favorite build from you yet! Quote
Gideon Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Nice with tiled walls for something which is depicting a new structure! I think however that the best part of the build is the landscaping, great with both new and disturbed snow A suggestion for improvement of the presentation is to include a picture which shows the whole build and is sharp throughout the build. If the last build is someones favourite one it means I’m still improving, always good to know Nice with tiled walls for something which is depicting a new structure! Thanks Gideon! The landscape was my favorite part to build. I cut off part of the sides on the pics as my background sheet was smaller than expected. Each pic had one side that stopped being white at the end so thought it would look better this way. Been trying to get a sharp pic of the entire build, but for some reason I fail at getting the focus right. Still very new at photography so any tips on how to improve are welcome. The Steward Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Very nice! I know this was already said but, great walls! Quote
Elostirion Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Great work! As others have stated superb shaping of the landscape, and I especially love the perspective of the first picture. Those poor guys in front of the gate, though... ;-) One suggestion: Two or three arrows in the ground around the algus, maybe even with a small flickering flame, could have been a great additional touch. Captain Braunsfeld Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Fine wall, fine landscape, fine build! Quote
de Gothia Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Great Wall! And the landscaping is outstanding!! Quote
soccerkid6 Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Yeah, I agree with Garmadon, this is my favorite yet The wall texture with the SNOT tiles works beautifully, and I like your inclusion of rockwork under the snow Quote
Puvel Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 Thanks guys! Good to know I’m improving Quote
Gideon Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) Been trying to get a sharp pic of the entire build, but for some reason I fail at getting the focus right. Still very new at photography so any tips on how to improve are welcome. Your pictures are already quite good so I will assume you have a fairly decent camera and that you know bit about the settings I would suggest setting a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field. This means that you will let in less light, so you need to counteract it by increasing the exposure time and therefore need to use a tripod (or if you are using flash, increasing the power of the flash). Otherwise the camera will probably compensate by increasing ISO and cause more noise in the picture. So learning how to handle the manual mode of your camera and taking control of "the exposure triangle" aperture, shutter speed and ISO will help you improve your pictures. Moving the camera a bit further away also helps to increase the depth of field I think, and helps you lower the perspective distortion (that vertical lines at the edges of the frame are leaning outwards). However you already seem to get the perspective quite ok so I wouldn't worry too much sbout that part. Getting the focus right is for me a bit of trial and error where I try to get both front and back of ghe build sharp, with as large aperture as possible. I usually use manual focus nowadays to fine-tune in live view so that the front is just barely in focus, and then take a picture and check if the back is in focus also. If not, I step down the aperture a bit and repeat until both front and back is in focus, but not too much of the cloth in front or in the back of the build. When that is ok, I adjust the lighting (and shutter speed if I use something else than my trusty flash) until I'm satisfied with the end result and take a series of pictures from different angles. (And after that I usually find something wrong or broken in the build so I need to correct it and repeat the photos ) If it's a closeup where limited deth of field is what I'm after it's of course a very different procedure. I normally deactivate auto ISO for lego shots and leave the ISO at a fairly low setting to keep the noise down. Edited January 8, 2016 by Gideon Quote
Blufiji Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Good technique with the tiled wall. I've seen soccer kid do it, so I assume you borrowed it from him and adapted it to your style? Quote

Good technique with the tiled wall. I've seen soccer kid do it, so I assume you borrowed it from him and adapted it to your style? Kinda had the idea when I got a bunch of these tiles from PAB a couple of months ago. Never gotten around to using them as I’m still building phase 1 things for AoM and those are mainly wooden structures. For this category I finally got to build a stone castle so I went for it. You’re right about soccerkid using the tiles for one of his castles so I cursed a bit when I saw that one, very nice castle though! Like that stonework and rockwork! Thanks! Quote
Spader Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I love the way you did the walls, and it's a nice landscape too. Keep it up! Quote
