Posted January 8, 20169 yr As I am a big fan of Quattro & Co., I allways wanted to upgrade my models with AWD. For christmas my wife gave me the 8258 Crane Truck and - as most of you - I think that this was a milestone in the Lego Technic Flagship era. So after finishing it I immediatly started to think about the possibilities of upgrading this excellent set with 8x8 and other improvements. Here you can see now my progress so far: Added double wheels in the back added second driven axle in the back (as developed by BS-user arachnid) added most of the improvements of Designer-Han added opening doors added (first?) center differential added the first driven front axle See here the first impressions of my changes. ..... ...... . In the moment I think about adding a second center diff between the two front axles, but I am not quite sure, if that is neccessary for the playablity (torsion in the drive train and thus rubbing tires). I will test that. Updates will be posted here soon.
January 8, 20169 yr Author It is not 8x8, but 8x6. Yup, but as I wrote... WIP.... And to be totally precise: It's a 6x8 so far! Edited January 8, 20169 yr by tripletschiee
January 14, 20169 yr Author Yesterday the missing parts arrived from Bricklink, so I could finish my MOD. I decided to waive the second center diff between the two front axles and just build the drive train with the one center differential between the two axle pairs. Considering playability it does not affectit too much, you can feel a slight bracing when running the truck through long turns. .... I also changed the kinematics of the crane a little bit, so that i folds a little more. ... That's how it looks like, I am satisfied so far, but who knows... maybe I will start changing things again later... .... More detailled pictures are on my Brickshelf or Flickr-folder.
January 14, 20169 yr Author Sorry, just changed the permissions of the photos on Flickr to "public". Now anybody can see them.
January 19, 20169 yr I also just vreated a short video of the drive train. nice. looking forward to the finnish product. (punintended)
February 21, 20169 yr Author So, after a while; I upgrade - besides the 8x8 - my 8358 also with a better crane, etc. It has three (instea of two) upper sections (based on an idea of BS-user Drakolder) is fully equipped with pneumatic (v2) and a compressor replaced the XL motor with two Ms (as the XL does not fit between the two rear differentials lengthwise and crosswise the two black 12T bevels could not take the torque) opening doors different seats (3 instead of two) ... Here are some impressions: ...... .... Details of the crane: ...... My idea behind that modifications is always the same: improve(d) functionality with the smallest possible change in the original appearance.
February 21, 20169 yr Author The two M motors power the remaining two original functions (stabilizers, crane rotation) very good. The pump can be activated via the original left switch (lever up), but that means the pump is driven through the whole drive train of the original setup. That means a lot of friction. The pump is working ok-ish. But you can hear and feel the strain of the pump, above all when the boom is extended and you want to rise the whole crane arm. The new cylinders itself are working perfect. Edited February 21, 20169 yr by tripletschiee
