dr jones Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 A very simple fix for the astromech droid is just removing the 2x2 under the one with the one stud and the two 2x1 tiles for the droid's feet. Sure, it'll be stuck harder, but it looks miles better and doesn't change the height of the wings! Quote
Davor Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Dude there is expensive and then there is absurdly overprized. And this Set, that probably has a sticker sheet thats wider and longer than the ship itself, is the latter category..... How is this set so horrible different from other sets we are getting and more overpriced? Last 2 years - mid sized sets = 25€ (v-wing/wheel bike/anakins eta2 /vulture droid) - bunch of stickers + 200 pcs This year - mid sized sets = 30€ (hoth attack/obis eta2/droid esc/carbon c) - bunch of stickers + 200 pcs Lego did say they can't get enough raw material for bricks + demand is higher than ever + inflation + exchange rates €£¥$ = higher prices Edited January 9, 2016 by Davor Quote

Frike Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Unfortunately I never got any of the previous Interceptors and this one looked really interesting to me. Because of that I ordered this from LEGO at the end of 2015 for the C-3PO promotion. I'm used to the already high prices in Sweden but this one was just even worse than usual. Since there weren't any reviews out at the time and because I had nothing to compare it to in my collection, the only thing bothering me with it was the badly placed astromech droid. I'm hoping I can modify the ship when I get it. I'm mostly disappointed about the fact that Anakin's Interceptor seems to be retired just now, I can imagine a lot of people would want both of them. As Dr Jones said, you can remove a layer of plates from the socket to drop the droid a bit, you can also drop the socket bottom one plate be removing the round plate on the bottom and just having the boat stud keep it together on the bottom, this wont disturb the bottom profile, you might need a few plates for the attachment to the wing though, add another plate/tile on top of the wing and the droid will look 1 full brick lower. Another option i was considering is getting the droid body from C1-10p (chopper from rebels), it is singificantly shorter then the standard astromech body, the downside is that out of the socket it will be blindingly obvious that you pulled a trick Quote

They make less for more because they realize they can squeeze more out of their consumers, especially with Star Wars (since the Hype has returned with the new movies). Thats in particular obvious when you compare certain sets that are placed in different price/part-count segments and you realize that the prices are completely all over the place and sometimes are just randomly way over the top. But its not only the price-per-part count but also if you look at what you actually get for 10/20/30 bucks or more (Not all sets have a good mix of small and big parts), and with the recent small sets most of the times it felt to me that you got not enough for the actual price (Obi Wans Jedi Interceptor, Carbon Freeze Chamber, Attack on Hoth...). benderisgreat Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Nice review! I completely agree with some of the points you make. Way too many stickers, and exposed technic parts. The pilots cabin is a downgrade from 2014 version: no control panel, no clips for a lightsaber. The only improvement over 2014 version is droid placement, even though the legs are somewhat exposed, still better than 2014 one since R2 legs were kinda sticking out from underneath. wilson3a10 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Way look better if the droid is placed like this Quote
duboismerci Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Thank you for taking time to make a review! It's a good one! (you might have rated the set a bit high IMHO. I would give a 6 or 7 tops) I don't see any difference between the 2 models except for the droid socket. Not sure if I will pick it up. I need a sale because at 29.99$ it's too much for a set I don't really need. ( I have the yellow one already) Quote

Im not too sure about the end score myself, i really hesitate to score an aspect below 6 (although i probably should have for price, i guess it doesnt help that for my particular desire this was the cheapest option), and it still is a very cool swooshable spaceship. Definitely not a 6 in my book, but a 7 might have been better. As for differences, check out the bulges on the wings next to the cockpit, the angle of the leading edge of the wings, the main guns, and the shape of the wings near the engines (and the engines themselves), those are the most obvious exterior differences Quote

They are fun to make but they do take a long time And I was comparing the fighters with the picture posted by wilson3a10 which is his mod. Now I see the difference. It's not a big one. Only thing bothering me is the canons and the droid socket. The rest I won't notice. I'll probly get it when it's on sale on may the fourth but I won't pay 29..9$ for it. (should go down to 23.99 CAD $ on sale) Quote
Reputator Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Not sure if it is the same price as Anakin's in the UK or cheaper, but it's certainly no more expensive. The US / Euro pricing for these new sets is strange. Order them from Amazon in the UK - you'll save money! FWIW, I quite like this set, but I've made some minor mods - put in a control surface / display, sunk the droid socket (and the other side) in by 1 plate, and added a clip for the lightsaber, and that definitely helps. Given all the Technic holes in the way, I'm curious how you accomplished the control panel! Quote
MartinCliffe Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Given all the Technic holes in the way, I'm curious how you accomplished the control panel! Nothing complicated, just a bracket, a tile, a few studs and a 1x4 double curve slope to bridge over the technics stuff. Quote
Aethersprite Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Another case of don't-fix-something-that's-not-broken. The recent yellow and green Eta-2s were great, albeit being bulky for their scale. Personally I don't mind the increased use of stickers, but the shallow droid socket and the disappointing cockpit (lack of controls and lightsaber storage) is extremely disappointing. I'll definitely get this to go with my Anakin's Eta-2, but I'm disappointed that I'm going to have to mod it heavily. Quote
Frike Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I'd like to share the solution I came up with for the poor placement of R4-P17. I basically removed the whole part keeping the droid in place and built one just like the one on the right wing. I then replaced the 2x4 tile with a 2x2 turntable and 2 1x2 tiles. Obviously the black turntable looks out of place but I have no light bley ones and they cost A LOT on Bricklink. R4-P17 - Fixed by ~Fredrik~, on Flickr Quote
Krulis Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Just got the set and I love it. It may have some flaws but I still think it is awesome. Oh and great review btw. Quote
bootz Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Being a fan of Obi Wan, this is a set I'm looking forward to picking up whe it becomes available in my area. It seems the consensus is that it's not worth the price, but unless you're willing to wait for a possible sale what else can you do than pay the price Lego asks for any given set? I've missed out on a few sets because I've assumed they'd turn up discounted because of their high price(the last ISD in paeticular) yet the shelves in every store I've been in have been virtually stripped clean of Lego Star Wars, that is unless you like buildable figures and Kylo's Shuttle. They charge what they do because they can, because we buy it anyway, because clearly there is a massive demand for Star Wars compared to all of their other themes. And if we're being honest, I'd assume most of us are aged 18+, so really ANY amount of money could be considered overpriced for a plastic toy. I wish Greenlight diecasts didn't cost me $6 for what is essentially a fancy Hot Wheels, but I know darn well I'm going to buy every 1970 Plymouth or 1977 Firebird I see. This is the price one pays for being part of this hobby. It's the price I pay for what makes me happy, and I can live with that. Quote
RetroInferno Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Honestly except for a few bad apples prices are generally pretty fair, especially considering how pricey Lego was in the 90's. I just think it's the TFA lego wave pricing that's been off the charts. Quote

That's a nice and pragmatic approach I think this set is overpriced, mostly because of the €5 pricehike it got in my country, but in the end it is a good looking set, and the stickers and correct minifigs really do add to it, which i wouldnt have had if i bricklinked my own version, which would have cost roughly the same anyway. I do find myself getting pickier when it comes to SW lego though, given the price increases compared to other themes, a set either needs to be on sale, or really impressive for me to pick it up Quote

So I generally only buy sets I feel that I need. I've passed on all of the TFA sets aside from Rey's Speeder and the polybags because I'd rather spend that on OT sets and the occasional PT set like this. I've never had an ROTS Obi Wan nor an Eta-2, and since Obi Wan was my favorite PT character this is a set I feel compelled to get. Other sets I've been on the fence about, I can't tell you how many times I've been in a store and almost bought the Rebels TIE Advanced prototype and Imperial Assault Carrier among other sets. Plus I still need to get the Brick Bank and the 1960s Batcave this year, and I can't neglect my diecast car collection either. So just like with Hot Wheels, I happily buy the ones that interest me and leave the ones that don't on the pegs. Sorry to have hijacked this thread though. Great review, and as I said this is one I'll definitely be getting. I may have to pick up Anakin's to compliment it. Edited January 16, 2016 by bootz Quote

Same here, life, kids etc.. all cost a lot more money then lego, so choices have to be made. As for the proto-Tie, imho it isnt worth the sticker price (at least here in europe), but at a slight discount its not terrible, im not the biggest fan of how they angled the wings though, so its definitely not a must-have set. The assault carrier is a good deal more interesting, but again, not worth sticker price imho, and it needs a few mods to look like the screen material. Ive got a gaming habit, various other lego themes and some die-cast cars as well to budget in :D Quote

TLG's placement is actually pretty accurate. It could be lower sure but have the body flush with the wing is overdoing it imo. Always nice to see some shoulder anyway. Quote

Lord-Vorahk Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 (edited) I'm prolly going to pick this thing up when I get the chance. Looks pretty good to me. With regards to the stickers: I don't mind them. Sure, printed pieces are nice, but the advantage of the stickers is that you don't have to apply them. For example, I recently bought a dupe of 2015 Kopaka, and didn't apply the stickers to the dupe's thigh shells, so now I have those pieces in plain white. If they'd been printed, then every iteration would have that potentially colour-scheme/aesthetic-breaking pattern on it. WHat's better? This set having printed S-Foils, or being able to get those pieces in dark red without having to buy the much older/more expensive sets they came on before. With regards to the lack of saber storage... Good. It looks ridiculous on almost every set it's on (Sidious having a special storage compartment for his Force Lightning, Anakin's Lightsaber blade having its own bracket next to the hilt, etc). I'd rather take the Lightsaber out of Obi-Wan's hand and put it on the shelf next to the ship than do that. As for the droid socket: Like people have said: That's actually the most accurate the droid socket on any Eta-2 has ever been, and I like the change. EDIT: Got the set. I made the droid socket one stud deeper, and with that done, it's really cool. I did notice that the instruction book's advertisement for the Force Builder app shows a yellow version of the design. Is that actually going to be a thing Edited January 21, 2016 by Lord-Vorahk Quote
