Introduction

Longer-term members of Eurobricks will probably be aware that I’m just ever so slightly obsessed by all things Cloud City, so when I heard the first rumours of a new Freezing-Chamber set I was rather excited by the prospect. Did it meet my high expectations? Well, read on and find out!

I’ve said it before, but I really don’t understand TLG’s apparent disinterest for Cloud City, especially when you consider the huge array of sets that have been made since 1999. Several of which seem to have very little appeal to anyone (e.g. 7111, 8012, 7252, 6205 and 75024 to name just a few!) and yet whilst we’ve had multiple Droid carriers, AT-ATs, AT-STs, X-Wings, Y-Wings etc, if I recall correctly there’s only been three previous Cloud City-based sets:

Firstly, we had 7119 (Twin-Pod Cloud Car) which although adorable is seriously out-dated, 10123 (Cloud City) which is looking similarly a little ‘tired’ these days if I’m being honest, and finally 9678 (Twin-Pod Cloud Car & Bespin) which was released in 2012. Considering that Cloud City takes up a decent percentage of the screen-time in The Empire Strikes Back (aka Episode V) that’s a pretty dismal show over a 15 year period in my opinion :hmpf_bad:

I’d always wanted a 10123, but I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the sort of money that a MISB version cost when I left my dark-ages a few years ago, and the cost has spiraled upwards ever-since. I kept thinking that a new version would be produced and, after 5 years of waiting, my dreams have been realised, well sort of, with the release of a brand new and shiny Cloud City-based set for 2016! I'd intended to buy this from Shop at Home as soon as it was available, but it seems to have been on a continual ‘back-order’ since the start of January, so I ended up picking it up from a local store. I usually wait for a decent sale before buying sets for my personal collection, but I was happy to pay the full RRP for it.

The box

Ok, I’ll admit that I’m a bit biased about this, but it’s a thing of beauty! They’ve captured the feel of the scene really well and, if it wasn’t for Kylo Ren lurking in the top-right corner, it would be just about perfect. The reverse is just as good, with a nice array of images showing specific details and play-features of the set. Top marks TLG designers, the box-art for SW sets keeps raising the bar

The contents

img_7555.jpg

My initial impression was that it was worth the cost; it’s quite heavy for that price point at about 363g (especially compared to the new Escape Pod). The box is almost filled with two bags plus a set of instructions. The great news is that the set is DSS (Dreaded Sticker Sheet) free! Another TLG oddity is the lack of consistency in the back (numbering) styles; I’m sure that there’s a reason why each of the bags are different but it does seem a little strange! The set consists of 231 parts and there’s a nice array of LBG, DBG, Trans-Orange and Black. It also includes a Dark red 4x6 plate, and a bright Yellow Technic axle which I haven’t encountered before – an interesting addition!

The build

Firstly apologies for the rubbish photos. In keeping with my previous reviews, the weather in the UK is typically dismal at the moment and best described as ‘grey and overcast’! The instruction booklet is 68 pages and is broken into 75 steps. I’ve included photos at around 15 page intervals.

The minifigures

This will probably be the most interesting part for most; according to Bricklink 3 of the minigures are new. Firstly we have everyone’s favourite bounty Hunter, Boba Fett, who is virtually identical to the version included in the £170 UCS Slave 1. Apart from a lack of arm-printing he looks identical (as shown below) so personally if I didn’t already own the UCS set I’d be more that happy with this as an alternative! Next we have an Ugnaught which is the first ever time that it’s been made in a LEGO form, and the designers have done a great job. I wasn’t too impressed when I saw the initial images, but he’s just about perfect. I would have liked to see him with a spanner (or possibly a white toolbag, but that probably just shows my age and fondness for the old Kenner minifigures) but you can’t have everything. Han (and carbonite) look very similar to the version in the UCS Slave 1 and Jabba’s Palace.

The Unusual Suspects

Summary

Previous comments and reviews have highlighted the size, or lack of it. I agree that it isn’t massive, but personally I think that its great value.

For £19.99 you get 3 minifigures (or 4 if you include the Carbonite!), a nice mix of 230 parts and a set that which feels solid and is a reasonable replica of the ESB scene. Functions wise, there’s a basic elevator to the right-side of it which is moved up and down via a small lever, and a Technic axle/assembly which enables you to either rotate the Carbonite block around, or move it below the level of the main platform. To be honest, the latter doesn’t work that amazingly, but it could be fun for little ones. In addition, there’s an odd 2x4 black plate which twists on a pivot and the box indicates that Han should be attached to it! I assume that it’s an attempt at replicating the torture room, but I could be wrong!

Overall, it’s a great set and my scores are as follows:

  • Minifigures: 8/10 – New Ugnaught (finally!) plus the chance to own a new Boba Fett at a reasonable cost.
  • Parts: 8/10 – For this price point it includes a great selection of parts; lots of Greys, Black and Trans-Orange. The full parts list is available on Bricklink.
  • Design: 8/10 – A great little set, which feels quite solid. The consol and pipes located on the side of the structure are nice additions.
  • Playability: 7/10 - Not bad for a little playset and I’m sure that the target audience (7-12 year olds!) would have quite a lot of fun with it
  • Value: 8/10 – Considering that the former wave of SW sets of a similar size (AAT & T-16 Skyhopper) were both £24.99, this seems very reasonable at £19.99 in the UK.

That’s 78% if my maths is any good! C&Cs welcome; I hope that you enjoyed my review :classic:

I enjoy your review. it is very nice. I still didn't buy it, but this is definitly a future buy for me this year. A selection of minifigures is perfect, the Ugnaught is the highlight for me, new race make in minifigure by LEGO, hurray.

Yeah, this is a good set for what it offers in minifigs, playfeatures and piece count. I especially love Bobba Fett( first time I've got his minifigure), but his angry clone face (instead of Jango Fetts face from 2013 or Ucs Bobba from Slave I) is out of place in my opinion . The only thing I dislike about the set is that it doesn't look like it's part of a larger set like Rancor Pit and Jabbas Palace. I was really hoping we will get Cloud City this way with a few interconnected sets( like Dining Hall, Luke vs Vader Corridor, landing pad for Slave I). Other than that it's pretty solid set.

A nice little set and a cheap way to get Boba Fett; However, the appeal greatly diminishes when you already own a UCS Slave 1 :(

As yet said, it's a cheap way to get two important pieces Boba Fett and Hand Solo in Carbonite.

Before this set was released, if you try to get them from bricklink or similar you have to pay even more than the price of this set.

Nice review. I was distinctly underwhelmed by this set though. I bought it for the minifigures, and I'm glad I didn't have to pay EU / Hong Kong prices for it.

Nice review ! I think I'm going to pick this set up now. I already have a Bobba Fett from the desert skiff set a couple of years ago, but I need that Han and the carbonite to go with my Slave 1.

Nice review! But wait, does Lobot come with the set too? That Ugnaught really is the star of the set. And as one of the few Cloud City sets ever made, this will definitely be picked up by me.

Great review and very nice pics. For the price it looks like it might be worth getting even though I have all the minifigures minus the Ugnaught. If this came with two Ugnaughts, that would really seal the deal.

Nice review, but for a minute I thought Lobot was included and got confused! Might pick this up at some point, but if Bricklink prices for the figs are decent I won't bother. It's quite underwhelming...

I was puzzled by that, too, mostly with the fact it pivots down like a Murphy bed...and realized then it's meant to be the beds in the holding cell Han, Leia, and Chewie were put in. It's supposed to be the bed that pops (horizontally) out of the wall when Leia activates it after they bring in post-torture Han.

On Lego.com there's a video that shows this set as it could have been: http://www.lego.com/...28e5c0706f3838f

Looks like it's possible to achieve those same results with a couple copies of this set :hmpf_bad:

Another member purchased 2 sets and was unable to make a full circle for the chamber. Unfortunately it's looking like an $80-90 moc :(

Lobot doing a bespin review

The highlight for me is the Ugnaught (although he's a bit too cartoony). The stairs are great too, but the set itself doesnt do it for me. I think it's a shame Lego forgetting about Bespin too. They should have made the 'Luke, i am your father' scene into a set a long time ago. And a new Bespin cloud car (with the pilots). And a battlepack with two guards, an ugnaught and the snivvian Wiorkettle (but that is because i want a snivvian real bad).

Another member purchased 2 sets and was unable to make a full circle for the chamber.

Where is this thread/post? I'd love to see it, but I must have missed it.

Nice review! Wasn't wowed by initial pictures of the set but admittedly it's grown on me. It's a nice little display with good minifigs, but not something I need mostly because I already have most of the minifigs from the 2010(I think it was 2010?) Slave 1, and while the Ugnaught looks fantastic I can live without one. The set itself is nice but I'll have to pass on this one for some of the other sets coming out this year.

I guess he was referring to this one. You can also see that one set does not offer a complete half-circle, so two of them will not combine to a full one either, unfortunately.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I'm glad that you liked my review :classic:

That makes more sense! I was working on the basis that it was just a basic 'play feature' considering the age range of the theoretical target audience (7-12!)... although as you say it should be able to re-tract into the wall rather than pivot. I get the feeling that it will be quite popular (even if it's just because of the minifigures) and am hoping that it may lead to better, and larger, Cloud City sets in the near future. However, I'm eternally optimistic about anything Cloud City-related so time will tell....

Appreciate the comprehensive review. thank you. Going to pick this set up mainly for the figs I think

You could actually make a full circle by combining 2 sets. It has an octagonal shape and there are 4 sides already. The mechanism wouldn't work anymore though. Or well you wouldn't be able to do "dip" Han into the carbonite anymore, it would hit the added other half of the platform.

The set doesn't make a full half circle though. It makes a little over 1/3. That said 2 sets will probably be enough to give you the look but by just combing 2 you will have a small gap. Hell, I'm probably going to do it. I have enough gray and black to make it work I think
