The price is insanely high... its beacause of "special" packaging... lego knows how to increase price by giving some exclusive looks to its models

TLG! We're not fool! ✋

At first I felt the price was a bit too high as well.. But then when you start looking at some other Technic sets like the $139.99 1042 piece Helicoptor, the $79.99 647 piece Drag Racer,a nd the $69.99 608 piece Race Truck , the $300 price on the 2,704 piece Porsche doesn't seem to be too bad..

One thing about the other sets that I mentioned is that there are parts in the 2 non PF sets that are kind of expensive, which are the tires($8 each for the Drag Racer and $3 each for the Race truck).. I am speculating that the tires and wheels in the Porsche set have much to do with it's price tag.. Along with the Sears Christmas catalog that comes with it of course..

@Richard : given the fact this set is kinda troublesome, you may find some of them very quickly at that sort of prices or even lower...the gearbox seems to be damn hard to set properly, hence the "ultimate" branding of this set.

Maybe 42056 needs such a big box because the box that size is also used for 42055. Economy of scale.

Uh....That's not what an economy of scale is.

As a pure LEGO technic fan, i did some mathematics based on the AutoBild time lapse video:

at 8:30 the pure chassis with all the technical functionality is ready and 323 steps from 850 are made: so ~1000 parts are used (3 Race Karts ;-)).

at 12:40 chassis and some additional parts are ready and 495 steps/850: so ~1600 parts are used.

This is the point were i will build it, and then put F1 tyres and my own framework on it.

I wouldnt buy those at full price either, basically everything over roughly €50 can be found at least 10% below lego MSRP over here (although i expect the porsche to be different give its exclusivity), and imho at least two of those sets (dragster and race truck) would need to go down even more then that before id consider them interesting. The dragster is basically a parts pack, and where lego come off charging €70 for a rigid suspension truck when 42037 has full independent at €55 boggles the mind. The helicopter also includes PF parts, which inflates the price.

As for the porsche, half of my gripe is the €330 we get to pay in the netherlands over €300/$300 for many other countries. The other half is knowing that part of that price goes into premium packaging and that damn coffee table book. If i had the choice between a €270 normal technic packaged porsche or a €300 coffee table quality book equiped one, id go for the cheaper option.

It will seem too bad when you consider 230$ for 2793 piece Arocs and 220$ for 2606 piece Mobile Crane.

@vectormatic you should really compare the price without VAT & other taxes, as some countries have varying VAT and may ou may not add further taxes (luxury, environment, ...)...new cars in Denmark are more than twice as much as in other UE countries...I guess this is the same thing for other goods.

Edit : removed unecessary speculations on why the gearbox might not shift properly and its possible fixes

For comparison, the chopper is €130, the dragster and race truck both €70 over here, doesnt make the porsche look good imho (this takes any taxes out of the equation, as they are all taxed the same percentage)

Perhaps better for the other topic about Porsche pricing, but luckily we have www.amazon.de (who price match other shops in Germany on discount deals) Vectormatic and plenty of other webshops that don't use Lego's prices as a baseline and then add a couple of bucks onto it (hi Bart Smit and Intertoys). I already know I can pick up the Porsche for 270 euros at best, but I am going to aim for 240 euros. I'd consider paying 300 euro if this set actually lived up to the marketing of "Ultimate", but it's already clear before any reviews are released that it doesn't. Without discount it feels like an expensive parts pack atm with a deluxe box and book.

I wouldn't pay full price for the other models mentioned either and haven't. Example: got the dragster twice, 46 euro each, best price I could get for it.

@vectormatic true, but you can't compare price including vat between countries, which was the point I was trying to make

@Appie to me, as an engineer, I do find way more fun to have something which is open for modification and doesn't work out of the box than having something which is open for modification but do work straight out of the box...needless to say I never was into playmobil when I was a kid

Wow, im guessing you have better sources then me, i usually can find a decent deal on the common sets, but the more exclusive sets (42041 for instance) can be hard to find below MSRP

Where have you found the porsche for 270 if i may ask?

Agreed, wasnt doing that though, i was replying to crowkillers suggestion that the price/part ratio wasnt too bad.

As for the liking something that is open to improvement, i fully agree with the sentiment, but i feel like a $300/€300/€330/whatever set marketed as ultimate should have the stock mechanics working perfectly. I can forgive a €30 go-kart having non perfect steering, not so much on this set, especially if it is a replica of a real life car, i'd feel like it should be as close as possible to the real thing, limiting modability

This I agree 100%

I was just naming some of the other most recent 2016 Technic sets that seem to be on the high end price wise ..

What if the gearbox do work perfectly but only after being finely tuned ? Should a build process be straightforward or should it require some fine tuning at some point ?

Point is also the VAT difference between Germany and the Netherlands is 2%, which still comes nowhere close to 30 euro difference. Also Europe has 1 MSRP for alot of products (non-Lego). The difference between individual countries in VAT is paid by the manufacturer since the difference is so small in general.

Hated Playmobil as well, but that was not the point of my post. I like MODing sets as much as the next guy, but as pointed out by Vectormatic and Paul Boratko, the keyword is "Ultimate". I shouldn't have the need to change anything major when that word is used. Minor things? Maybe. Major functions that define this model? Don't call it "Ultimate" then Lego, because when I have to MOD this I am basically breaking the model down to scratch and doing your "Ultimate" job.

The usual stuff of brickwatch.net and the Lego deals topic on Tweakers and Lowlug. The dragsters were among an order shortly before easter of pretty much every set of Technic 1H 2016 when www.MyToys.de had a decent discount on alot of sets (think the dragsters went for 48 euro) and as a new customer you get an additional 15% discount, which would mean I actually got them for about 42 euro each lol when I account for the shipping for the 8 sets or so I bought then (5,95 shipping total).

I can't tell where I will get the Porsche for 270 (or less) yet, it's just an educated guess based on experience of the past. Amazon.de always seems to have a pretty solid price right before launch on alot of sets in the past. Minimum of 10% discount usually, which would mean 270. Amazon will always pricematch a discount deal from Germany's Toys'r'us, which usually mean 10-20% discount on Germany's Toys'r'us price which tends to be below MSRP as well and then there are shops like MyToys that will price match Amazon and at times have pretty discount deals of their own. Btw speaking of the dragster, it's about 48 euro now on amazon.de. And 42043 for about 155 euro right now. The 42041 is a hard set to get a deal on yes since not alot of shops sell it, the best I have seen was about 50 euros.

@Appie I thought that you had way higher VAT, my bad on that one.... (and the price difference on amazon for 42043 between France and Germany is pretty steep too)

Really crazy comparing prices in the U.S. to my good friends in Austrailia..

42039 24 Hour Race Car

U.S. $129.99

Austrailia $159.99

Doesn't seem too bad. :classic:

42056 Porsche

U.S. $299.99

Austrailia $499.99

Woah..

As an engineer I do find it disappointing building a set (designed by professionals at the biggest construction toy company in the Solar System) that doesn't work out of the box.

For 300 euros I get almost twice the parts and design a model from scratch.

Hell. I, as a medicore nobody, cancelled models because something was a bit jamming. Yet, the biggest toy company wants to release a model which main selling feature (the gearbox) doesn't really work. But at least we know why they use the white clutch gear...

Sorry, my English and communication skills suck.

What I want to say is that the Porsche set is a product as a whole. Not just ideas, or parts, or a fancy book with a fancy box. It better work right or I will never ever by a flagship from Lego and never build their sets even if I buy them for part (because obviously I wouldn't give up on this hobby just because a crap set and a very strange business decision that may ruin the reputation among Technic AFOLs).

Maybe I'm overreacting, still waiting for the reviews. Hopefully the reviewers will dare to tell all the issues (if they really there).
