Count me in the list of Americans who love the Technic sets.

I've very excited about this Porsche set. So much so that I just bought a couple new sets so that I would have enough pieces to build Paul's Porsche GT3. Which I've spent the last week tweaking the design of to better accommodate my part collection.

Very interesting sidebar. I'm actually an engineering major (civil/structural) in college right now. I think a lot has to do with the huge reduction in creative play that kids have experienced over the past few decades. I'm even willing to put a tiny bit of blame on TLG for participating in that trend. When I was a kid in the late 70's, it seems as though many or most, if not all, LEGO sets had zero instructions, but rather an idea book. We were never told what those bricks had to be, we were encouraged to make them whatever we could imagine. Now though? Some 90% of sets or more are sold with one model on the outside, and one set of instructions inside. Kids in America are not encouraged to play outside, ranging through neighborhood and countryside, making up everything as they go, unlike how I grew up. Everything is a little premade package for them. Scheduled activities and playdates, toys that profess to foster creativity, but only along some narrow, predetermined path. It's all sad, really.

But, even my instinct to acquire has been primed to want this set. Frankly, it's a thing of beauty, and who has the money to buy enough parts to build something like that from scratch?

Technic is not marketed very well here, so maybe part of the lack of interest is because of a lack of push by TLG?

It's true TLG doesn't show technic commercials on tv here in the USA. They show plenty of ninjango, etc...

I think culturally most teens in the USA have outgrown Lego. Then re-discover Lego technic as adults. ;)

Also, when I watch something Technic-related on Youtube, I might get an ad for Ninjago or Star Wars, but I've never seen Technic advertising in Youtube.

In my opinion the body is going to rise a little. Look at thee space between the fenders and the wheel. On the sides is much more space than at the top. The normal car has just everywhere the same distance? Just my opinion, i'm not an engineer

Anyone have any idea when this set will be released?

can an admin change the name to porshe gt3 rs please? unless that's not the car.

I'll rename the topic to the actual set name when it has been officially revealed.

I believe that space is needed for the steering - LEGO steering has the steering pivot point outside or slightly inside the wheel, while the rest cars have it in the center of the wheel

I see. I hope you are not right but that's probably not the case onfortunately

What is it with Americans and Technic ? I have only met two other builders that I know locally, one of them has an interest in NXT and regular MOCs, the other Bionicle. Is it too complex/time involving for them? As I love the mechanical aspects of the technic line, but like the different techniques for shaping available with the regular studded system. It could be a lack of interest in STEM concepts? This is my perspective from Minnesota, it may differ in other states.

I've had this discussion with a few other system builders who were somewhat into Technic and this is exactly what we felt the issue was.. I know the U.S. is ranked way below all of the Asian and European countries..

This is indeed an interesting sidebar. As an American, it also concerns me. I have children who love Lego, but I am the scorn of the family for loving Technic. HOwever, I am not sure it has more to do with less capability or adeptness in building with Technic, as others have mentioned, but perhaps, IMO, the heavy dose of pop culture and media exposure Lego is receiving in other genres. America is known for being a culture requiring "bling" - and I don't refer to this in a positive way. Perhaps too much emphasis on outward appearances. I see many builders concerned with what "looks cool" - and although we certainly know Technic can look cool it is a trade-off of looks versus functionality at least to some degree.

Could it also be the fact that it is not that there is little interest in Technic, but rather that it is just subsumed in the overwhelming sheer numbers of those interested in other genres? Very likely a poor comparison here..... but consider comparing sushi and pizza. It is not that no one likes sushi, plenty of people in the US do. But offer "food fairs" and exhibitions targeted at the masses and smart money would be that there would be many, many if not exclusively more booths dedicated to pizza rather than sushi.........after all I know whole college, high school, etc., curriculum programs that are build around Technic or NXT sets. Not sure it is fair to say there is no interest in the US in Technic....... just that perhaps it palls in comparison to other genres.....

Going back to the Porsche

In my opinion – for a released set, Lego have done a pretty good job here in releasing the basics of what can possibly be modded into quite a masterpiece.

A few design aspects that are so far disappointing to me

  • The front wishbone suspension set up. I guess that having shorter wishbones means the same springs can support a heavier front end weight but unless they have created some 3L link arms then there will be some bump steer – although as has been pointed out, the new hubs are so badly designed and slack that this will barely be noticeable.
  • The New Wheel Arch panels. I wish Lego had designed these in two halves with a 1 or 2 stud width curved extension panel in the middle. The 1 or 2 length panel would have been really useful in other aspects of design as I am sure the new 6 width curved panel will be (on the door of the Porsche). The two halves set up with extender would have allowed for the wheel arch to be made smaller or wider to accommodate difference size wheels etc in futures MOCs

Could someone be so kind to summarize the last 38 pages of this topic to update on what we know. (pretty please)

I'm quite impressed with the first pics! The new panels look awesome!

Also I have a 3rd party solution for slack new hubs if anyone is interested I could make a topic. :)

(I assume these are 42000 hubs) :)

. Yes please. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, this would be very helpful. In fact, if there is anyone put there that wants to make a name for him or herself, this would be a great thing to do for any post that reaches 20 plus pages. The thread on the new BWE and Claas Xerion could use summary pages as well.

Summary: We like the shape, we like the wheels, we don't know much about the drivetrain, it might not be black, and it will be expensive.

I think has new hubs, at least on the front. I haven't been able to recreate the position of the pieces that are visible with any of the current hubs.

I was gonna do a summary for the porche, but then I realized 90% of what we know hasn't been confirmed so here's what we know:

It's probably gonna be 300 euros, it looks to have PF lights, black or black camo will not be final color, and there are a lot of new pieces.

And here's what's been speculated:

It could be RC, lack of HOG points to that, still doesn't have realistic suspension or steering geometry, probably has a flat engine in the back, and it could also not be RC (no visible motors yet other than brick built pieces [possible place holders]).

Unfortunately this was all LEGO had to tease us with of the Porche set at Legoworld Copenhagen today.

At least i was told it was a teaser made for the upcoming Technic Porche set by an employee.
