Yes, but the reason Porsche has much higher step numbers is that this year LEGO stopped numbering sub-assembly steps separately. It used to be that when you started a sub-assembly it would revert to step 1, and then after the sub-assembly steps were finished it would pick up where the "main build" steps left off. Now, when a sub-assembly begins, it continues with the same step numbers from the main build, and then when the sub-assembly steps are finished the numbers continue uninterrupted.

So instead of the numbering going like 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, the numbering would now be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. This means much higher step numbers by the very end, but also means much less room for confusion since there now aren't going to be as many steps and sub-steps with the same number, and the step numbers now better reflect how much building you've done (in an earlier 200-step set, step 100 could be anywhere, but now in a 200-step set step 100 is going to more reliably mean you're halfway done building).

Well, I re-checked with Jan and he confirmed that there are indeed 856 steps (he was at step 122 at the time). :) Ghostbuster HQ has 600 steps and Porsche is much more complex, so I guess it makes sense. There is slight possibilty that instructions are not final and number could change, but I doubt it, since first sets must on their way to major reviers or even already at them (judging by Sariel explicilty stating that he will have review ready on june 1st).

Sadly, there are no other details about the build or progress pictures.

BTW, if we take into account number of pieces, that means a "whopping" 3 and somethig added pieces per step. Not bad, eh... :(

Keep in mind that a set like this is likely to have a lot of sub-assemblies, and every time you add a sub-assembly to the main assembly counts as a "step" that doesn't technically add ANY new pieces (only the pieces that had already been put together in other steps). I don't think average number of pieces per step is a particularly useful metric for judging a build's complexity, in any case...

Guess it's hard for Lego at this point to make a BI that isn't holding your hand with baby steps. So while the set has a 16+ on the box they treat it like every other set. Kinda stupid imo. What's supposed to be 16+ about this set now when the BI follows the rules of a basic Technic set? The model doesn't have any precision mechanisms like working brakes which could require 16+, so the 16+ looks like a lie.

I hope reviewers talk about the age in their reviews too and what stuff in the model could warrant the 16+, because I don't see it.

People look too much into this 16+ thing, definitely.

I guess so. Maybe the 16+ is just because this is intended to be more a display model than a toy and TLG don't want every 10 year old kid to be disappointed about the lack of playability.

At face value this might seem like a distraction, but due to some of the traffic on this thread I think it entirely pertinent. @emmi - while I truly admire your enthusiasm for this set lemme just put out there..... and generally to all those itching for this set they can hardly stand it...... i will just put out there a personal experience. When 42009 was announced (I am relatively new from my own dark ages) I thought Sept (the release date, or close to it) would never come. I obsessed and checked for updates all the time. When the Arocs was announced.... same thing. I have come to discover though..... especially as of late, there will always be come really cool models coming on the horizon. After the Porsche, perhaps a Ferrari, then a..... There will always be a new, big, shiny flagship on the way. If we get into the habit of itching for whatever the future holds then even when the Porsche comes out it will not be fully enjoyed because anticipation of what is next will over-ride it. Focus on what we have now, enjoy it, and whatever the future has it will come soon enough. I, as well, am excited for the Porsche, but have learned to fully enjoy the other models I lusted after so much..... thus decreasing my angst for any new models.

That sums up the whole consumer culture of today.

As you said, we need to live in the now, enjoying what we have, not always live in anticipation of the next big thing.

Why? Because I expect a more adult oriented building experience with this new age category on the box? What on earth was I thinking? *end sarcasm

I question the 11-16 age on previous flagships as well, but even more so for this new category.

New age category for the price seems true, because it doesn't look like it's on the box for the building experience.

Nice! Red rims, what!? Well it looks like it's pictures from the pre-production phase since he also uses yellow shock absorbers ... Also did you guys see the green Porsche behind him? It looks like a different sort of Porsche ... could it be another, smaller Porsche set for 1H 2017? And I see the 911 GT3 RS in white :wink:

I guess they're just prototypes of the current iteration of the Porsche. They won't make a new model for each model in the 911 range :wink:

I doubt the green one is a prototype for the current model ... it's a completely different type of Porsche ... I could really see it being released as a smaller 1H set, maybe?

The green one looks like a very, very early version of the Porsche. I don't think that they would re-release the same car two times, a 718 (with Cayman and Boxter models 8448-style) would be a better idea for a smaller car.

My thoughts exactly. In the designer video it was said that Uwe had made a first prototype in a few weeks time to show at Porsche. This could be that first prototype.

Hmh, don't stretch it too far out guys. Its the older GT3 RS in Green i think... you can even make out the "GT3 RS" Lettering as a sticker or so

I also think that its a old iteration based on an, back then, existing older GT3 RS

It looks smaller and with lower line. Could be new Porsche 718 Cayman:

Considering that it is using the old style panels in lime green, I can't really see it being released anytime in the future.. It's probably just an old project that Uwe built in his spare time..
