July 29, 20168 yr In the Netherlands widely available for 99,99 euro's right now. Bart smit sells them for 90,00 euro's till sunday (10% discount)
July 31, 20168 yr I called my local lego store today to find out if they had them on the shelf and what the price was. Mind you I know three of the employees and spend good money at this particular store each year. He said to me, not shelving until Aug 1st and price is unknown. Drove to my local Toys R Us, two were sitting on the shelf for $119.99 USD. Today there was 20% discount on Technic. I went to the register to purchase the set. She said it's not part of the sale. I said it's technic like the sign says. They honored the discount so I got it for $94.99 USD. My thought is the sale ends today and they accidentally stocked this set to fill shelf space. I hope I got a good deal at that price. I feel I did.... Edited July 31, 20168 yr by 750ACE
August 1, 20168 yr B-model video from the designer himself (Milan). Will try to destroy the crane part of my 42043++ to re build this (95% according to rebrickable).
August 1, 20168 yr Anyone in Finland shopping for it now, it's available at verkkokauppa.com (Pirkkala) for 79,90 Eur. Only 2 in stock right now. Edited August 1, 20168 yr by Beard
August 2, 20168 yr You know what, B-models are not supposed to be THAT cool and authentic ; __ ; Now I want another set just to build the B-model...
August 2, 20168 yr The crane stands erected much much longer than I thought. I gave it 4-5 pump, and it stood there for like 10 minutes! Cure for male dysfunction found haha Edited August 2, 20168 yr by nguyengiangoc
August 3, 20168 yr I finished the B-model today. Some impressions: - Steering is a bit hard because the hoses go through the turntable, and because articulate steering moves the whole model. - Most of the B-model stickers can be applied without having to peel off any A-model stickers, except for the 2 pieces intended for the 3x11 black panel. - Amazing details! I love the rear most. It has a fake engine, three fake oil inlets, and an exhaust pipe. The real L350G has 2 exhaust pipes at the end. This set brilliantly uses the hand pump as the center, larger pipe and another one as the smaller one. - Genius conversion from the black-dominant A model to the yellow-dominant B model. - The only connection points between the front and the main body are the black half of the turntable. No other connection points. At first I thought the model will be flimsy or very flex around that part, but it turns out to be very stable. No visible bending. - A lot of parts left. Roughly half of the parts. Most studded parts, orange parts, and A-model-stickered parts are unused. - The B-model is heavier in the rear, so if I pump without grabbing the bottom of the set, sometimes I would just end up pushing the whole rear down. August 3, 20168 yr and A-model-stickered parts are unused. Except two 1x6 tiles with VOLVO text and sticker for the seat :) I have also finished this model and placing all the hoses inside the frame was a bit difficult, becuase they are longer than needed and that additional length (x6) had to be squeezed somewhere. Two Volvos on two pictures: Edited August 3, 20168 yr by M_longer
August 9, 20168 yr After finishing building this set, I'm so happy Lego came out with the manual pump again! I put a bunch of 1x1 bricks in a cereal bowl, and I can unload the bowl into the Arocs bed faster with the Volvo than with the Arocs. Now just to find some 1x2 slopes to finish off the looks on the arms, and possibly make a design for a cupping bucket.
August 9, 20168 yr I bought and built this set over the weekend and I love it. The pneumatics are much more fun than linear actuators. My only problem is the front blade. I've rebuilt it twice to see if I made a mistake but it still doesn't lock in place very well, especially when pumping the compressor. Am I missing something or is it a ploy by TLG to make me buy power functions? (I'm going to buy PF anyway, this set is so much fun Edited August 9, 20168 yr by ukbajadave
August 9, 20168 yr I got this set a couple of weekends ago along with the BWE, but built this first. I think it's a great little set and really good value for money with a good variety of parts. I haven't had chance to build the B model, but the pictures of it look great too. I also reckon you could do a reasonable cherry-picker with this kit.
August 10, 20168 yr Designer video is online: http://www.lego.com/en-us/technic/videos/designer-video-42053-29155959273849f79cb44a6a25476cd4
August 10, 20168 yr Author He Jim when is your review of this set coming up?? I'd say late August, sorry. Just started working on it.
August 10, 20168 yr Just finished building mine today, 5 hours of pure joy of construction (I almost forgot how fun is to build sets w/o gearboxes ). I like the fact that it works like a charm, the V2 pneumatics are as good as in the Merc. It is almost as big as the 8043 excavator, but not so good looking. I got it at around 80 euro so for the price it is a very good set/good way to get your hands on those V2 pneumatic.
August 10, 20168 yr I, on the contrary, consider the Volvo as better-looking than the 8043. 8043 to me doesn't have a clear, consistent color pallet. It's predominantly gold with some dark grey here and some black there. The 42053, is much more uniform and consistent It is a solid black cube with clear yellow areas and orange accent. It also have many realistic details, and the curves in the back is nicely constructed
August 10, 20168 yr Hmm, looking to both side by side I still like the 8043 best, but in the end you can not really compare the two of them, they are both beautiful in their own way.
August 10, 20168 yr I think 42053 serves as a perfect counterpart to 8043: - Wheel vs Track - Pneumatic functions vs Motorized functions - Realistic appearance vs Mechanical complexity - Black vs Yellow
August 10, 20168 yr Thanks Agrof for the video. Oh man, What should I buy first, 42053 or 42054? What a tough decision! To me the 8043 is more beautiful. It has a consistent design. The Volvo looks a bit messy with those long hoses (rigid ones would make it sleek) and the tick orange parts (no chance for another design) but yeah, they are great models on their own way.
August 11, 20168 yr I've picked up this set for €85,95 at A-Tembo (http://www.a-tembo.nl/webshop/lego/technic/42053-volvo-ew160e-detail.html) and I think it's great value. It's quite a long build, the functions work really well and it's nice to have a set with that many functions and only three gears.
August 11, 20168 yr Hi Folks If anyone is interested in the LDD file? The model is done, unfortunately without pneumatics Maybe one of our friends could finish the model with brickbuild pneumatic parts... LDD File Here And some renders for my enjoyment Thanks Edited August 11, 20168 yr by Siegfried Meyer
August 11, 20168 yr Author Nice work! May I recommend adding a light source to your scene (if that's possible). It's quite dark now.
