Well guys you'll convinced me into opening the box of this bad boy and guess what? I got the version where there is one BIG instruction book instead of 6 separate ones. And holy crapper-di-crap... There sure is alot of Lego in that cramped box! So no investments, I'm here to build! I once had a 10179 Millennium Falcon, 10134 Y-Wing, 10178 motorized AT-AT and a 10174 AT-ST and sold them for the regualr Retail price MISB. That was one stupid mistake. I take comfort in the fact that the sets where sold to children who actually built the sets instead of fortune seekers. But just in case... I do have some Star Wars UCS sets stored to gain back some of my Lego investments ;-) ;-) :-) No it's time to build me a Mobile Crane MKII. Back from the dark ages for sure!

I am in the same boat. I actually had two coming out after the dark ages periods. One in like 2004-5 where I didn't even get into Technic. But I had The Statue of Liberty (3450) SW Imperial Shuttle. Sold 'em later for really nothing. Had no idea there was an afult secondary market. Then nearly ten years later, discovered the adult market and MOC enthusiasts and now here I am. Glad things worked out for you. Hope to NOT hear a response from you for a while cuz you should be building the 42009!

The build is coming along quite rapidly! I started yesterday with this:

Sorting it into this:

Preparing myself by just having a look at this pile of paper...

At this stage I was shure the build was almost ready!

Only to be greatly mistaken... By now I was really greatfull for the advice of you'll that this is a great build.

And there you have it. The first part is done.

I left the plates unlocked so I can have a look at the gears when I want to.

Preparing myself for the superstructure now!

Ton, are the legs on the stabilisers dropping down on your build as mine are slipping wit the clutch gear as they seem to be sticking and only dropping on 1 side, during testing.

It is a common mistake I remember - one goes down, and another wish to go up. Check your gears.

Is your sort just for bag(s) 1?

I started my 42009 today as well and my days building was to sort bag(s) 1, organized into bins according to my personal grouping technique.

Now, ready to start building tomorrow!

BTW: Anybody know the approximate parts count for bag 1 set, bag 2 set and bag 3 set? Bag 1 set looks like a big build, a 4 to 6 hour build for me.

I sorted out the gearing for the stabiliser legs it was easy simply changed 2 gears round, it works a treat now.

Hi,

42009 I did it twice once the original( 2nd copy went to spares), 2nd I started making Jurgens ultimate(ongoing..).

Take ur time, when building, to make sure ur gears have no friction when building, I'm sure you can make the outriggers move.

This thread reminds me of the beginning of 2015 when I first got back to Lego Technic.

42009 is my second set out of my dark age. The first is a used 8070. At first sight this set reminds me of the studded version 8460 in 2002. I craved it so much back then that when I saw the 42009 I knew I've got to have it. Local toy stores in Vietnam were selling it at about 390 EUR. I knew it was kinda rip-off but I still bought it anyway. It blown me away with its sheer size and mechanical complexity. Although from the aesthetic perspective it isn't very appealing, nor does it have any realistic details like the 42043, 42009 still remains one of my favorite sets.

@ Vassal or anyone who can answer, can you make Jurgens ultimate by buying 2 of the MKii sets (excld. PF)? I am sure it's noted somewhere but I am being lazy.

Well the crane was already finished on Sunday (I'll post some pictures later on). I made a few minor mistakes along the way, all solved very quickly (I put on a black front bumper which needed to be DBG. I found that out when I started making the boom and missed a black beam. And in the superstructure I mirrorred an axle with gears so at first it ended up on the wrong side). All functions work as they should, no cracking or slipping gears and the boom slides smoothly in and out. All my doubts were for nothing, since this is a wonderful set. It's a very fun build and ones built this crane is HUGE. I love it!

This thread pushed me over the edge and convinced me to buy this set while I could still find it for MSRP. Will build it third, after I restart my collection with 42024 and 42039.

I'm still working on this set. I started Monday (Feb 8) by sorting all of the number 1 bags. Started building Tuesday and today I am still working on the base. This thing is a monster! A very enjoyable build, kind of like a learning laboratory for LEGO Technic!

So far I am going a little better understanding of gear boxes (which is why I bought this set) and an understanding of building modules an connecting those modules together, then reinforcing with beams to give strength. A small thing I learned was to really look at parts when MOCing. On page 11, step 30, they joined 3 pieces with an axel to make a new support piece, really clever, I must remember this technique for the future.

If there is anyone on the fence about this set... Get it while you can, you won't regret the learning/building experience!

In the two weeks since this topic has been posted, the last of the 42009's have become sold-out from both the on-line and brick/mortar Toys-R-Us stores (at least the ones near me) - coincidence? Maybe. Remaining available on-line inventory, in the US at least, is now approaching prices at a premium from the original list, for new sets, while used are still available, but not as heavily discounted as before. If you are on the fence about this set, I'd suggest getting one now before the mark-ups get out of hand. I finally rationalized buying this, and at a decent price to boot for NISB (not getting the AROCS however).

Although there are still plenty who complain that TLG puts out too many cranes.....i think for the majority cranes are a big winner. Prices are rising quicker than when the Unimog went out of production......

I guess I made the right choice to buy my 42009 from Toys-R-Us online last week :) This thread was indeed responsible for at least one purchase.

I thought it'd be retiring a lot earlier - I picked one up last summer for about £112, thinking "yeah, that's a stock clearance price", but the price went back up a few days later. Now it's going for over £200 at a lot of retailers. Dodged a bullet!

I finished the 42009 - A yesterday. Great, fun build great model. Today I am going to start disassembly and sorting to prepare to build the B - model.

It took me 11 build days (about 30 hours) for the A - model, I had the benefit of bags of parts. I wonder how long the B - model will take me considering I have to first disassemble before sorting?

Well, off we go!
