Robianco Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I think maybe its down to people asking for an updated one... which I don't see the need for. It is true though, that with Han being identical to another version in a cheaper set as well as Luke being only slightly updated it would seem like a pretty obvious void seeing as she's one of the central characters in the Assault on Hoth. I'd have personally preferred a snowy Chewie along with probe droid to reenact that scene as well as having Luke and Han to reenact the search and rescue scene. Lego haven't always been that obvious in their figure choices though. I'm assuming they have their reasons for doing so. Quote
CMP Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I have no idea how LEGO got here from the amazing Ewok Village. Quote
BigEl Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I have no idea how LEGO got here from the amazing Ewok Village. I do. Being lazy as hell since they pretty much print money with the new trilogy again without investing much effort in both designs and production costs (especially fair price per part ratios) Quote
Forresto Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I read the Brickset review for the same reason for the same reason I read Lords of the Sith. You know how it's going to end, Vader and Palpatine are obviously not going to die and the set's going to stay god awful, but you read to see the horror show of the carnage that ensues. (BTW that is not a spoiler for the book. If you don't know Palpatine and Vader make it until Return of the Jedi then you're most likely in the wrong forum.) Quote
Borex Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I just saw the review on brickset. What a sloppy set. And all those studshooternonsense. Lego get your act together. Quote
Junior Shark Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 (BTW that is not a spoiler for the book. If you don't know Palpatine and Vader make it until Return of the Jedi then you're most likely in the wrong forum.) El oh el! Honestly, the 75098 discussion has been beat to death (which is all the set deserves). But I'll add my two cents once again: it sucks. Kinda hoping sales of the thing totally tank. Two effects: 1. Lego will never release such a crappy UCS again. 2. It's heavily discounted, giving me a valid reason to pick it up. Quote
Risgrynsgrot Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 75098 will forever be remembered as the black sheep in the UCS family, and really is one of the worst sets ever, since it fails to live up to the UCS standard in so many ways. This along with the May the 4th "promo" makes it feel like LEGO is pissing on us and doesn't even have the courtesy to call it rain Quote
Junior Shark Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Another hour, another negative 75098 review: http://www.fbtb.net/2016/04/29/review-75098-assault-on-hoth/ Quote
TheBrickPal Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) I saw a hilarious comment about the naming of the set in the Brickset review, which gave me the inspiration to do THIS... No regrets! The name is back to normal now, but you can see the changes recorded and archived on the set details page. Edited April 29, 2016 by Puffle Pal26 Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 If nothing else about this set brings enjoyment, at least that did!! That's hilarious! Quote
lanesteele240 Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) i did some thinking. If you missed out on the sets that make up 75098 and had to go buy them on the secondary market, the cost would be 400-500 dollars. So it is a good price at 250$. Second. Many complain that it is not an UCS set. Well i dont feel it is a bonafide UCS set but it would still take up the same amount of space on the shelf as a real UCS set. Why should lego not try to pinch out a few more sales to the adult collectors. Third. People say it wont sell. I have found that forums make up around 4-5% of the population of the thing they are foruming. So people will buy this set. Lego is for Wealthy people. Or at least people with a lot of disposable income. So birthdays, Christmas bla bla bla and bla are not the only times that parents will buy this for their kids. I walkes out of the lego store many times with 200-300 dollars worth of sets for my son on just a summer trip. People say parts of it are badly designed. Is it not our job to make them better. People mod the best of the best built UCS sets. Bottom line. We are disappointed that is was not a falcon or ISD. I will get the set for two reasons. I dont have any hoth sets (my son and i quit lego for 3 years and did another hobbie) and i need something to buy to get the space slug set. Edited April 29, 2016 by lanesteele240 Quote
ISDAvenger Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Hahaha! That's just awesome. In other news, I am picking this set up in the morning, since I sold most of my old related Hoth sets. I saw a hilarious comment about the naming of the set in the Brickset review, which gave me the inspiration to do THIS... No regrets! Kristof Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I'm thinking how easily could this be quite well accepted big playset if only several decisions have been made right in TLG: 1) Peeling off the UCS mark (along with omitting the UCS hype in announcement so everyone expected just a regular playset) 2) Calling it Hoth Echo Base (so the lack of imperial assault wouldn't be that striking) 3) Setting the price at $200 maximum (perhaps with help removing Wampas cave or some extra Ion canon...) In such presence, I think the customer feedback would be slight disapointment at its worst. Like: 'Ummm alright, big Hoth playset, mostly revamps but who cares, ion cannon -not the prettiest but hey, at least we have one...- shield generator, finally! And 2K bricks for $200, not the worst deal in the world!' Though, all these decisions have been made wrong and we have a (justified) hate hype instead. My honest opinion is that there is no possible satifactory 'UCS Assault on Hoth' set. I simply can't imagine what would it (or should it) look like. If this set was to meet UCS standards, it would require UCS squality AT-AT (at least one) and UCS quality Echo Base plus about ten pounds of white bricks to make up for all the required snow. Maybe I'm just missing something and there is a possible form for such set... but I doubt. For me it is the same chimaera as e.g. UCS Battle of Coruscant set (minifig scaled) or... actually any UCS set that represents some full scale 'battle'. Quote
YellowCorvette Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Yeah, 75098 is a big letdown and will remembered as one of the worst UCS set ever. The UCS TIE Fighter, UCS Slave 1, Sandcrawler and Ewok Village from the previous 3 years are so good, and this one does not live up for what every Lego fans would expected in a UCS set. Quote
Wonderpants Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Brickset has just published a review of the set (link). It mirrors most of the others that I've seen - essentially a very expensive playset and totally unworthy of the 'UCS' designation. I've been in two minds about buying it since I saw the first images of it, but I just can't bring myself to spend £220 on this..... hopefully it will be significantly discounted in the next year, otherwise it may be a pass for me At least the UCS Snowspeeder is now showing (again) as a UCS for 2017 on Brickset which is something to look forward to, although what's the chance that it will be from Episode VII? Disappointed that the snowspeeder has been put back. 10188 has been around forever and only just discontinued, so why a new DS already, and a chance to get the snowspeeder at a reasonable price would have been nice. Quote
Gremer Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Having read Brickset's review, I just can't support it anymore. It should have just been the blast doors imo, and that would have dropped $120 or so dollars off of it. The snowspeeder is just a recolored 2014 one, the ion cannon is garbage, the trench is just a bigger Hoth Attack and the shield generator is too small. The UCS designation doesn't bother me, as it's never meant anything to me. It's just so overpriced that I can't bring myself to buy it. Quote
lanesteele240 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 It is .116 of a dollar per peice. In line with ever other star wars set on the shelf. Quote
Forresto Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 There is one positive we can all glean from this and feel about. There is no actual way TLG could make a worse SW set then this one. Continue a trend, god forbid, sure but this is what I think rockbottom looks like. Hopefully with enough flak and poor sales they will learn their lessons and never try something like this again. That being said I feel bad for the designer. I have a feeling he was given this assignment and didnt know what to do with what he had. I will give him leeway for a mistake here because he is responsible for the incredible Slave I UCS. Quote

Kristof Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Yes, but only if 7257 didn't even exist > (http://brickset.com/...Lightsaber-Duel) Really? That set was rather an experiment, focused mainly on playing, plus it was released in the era of similar 'stick-operated' sets (Hockey...). I'm not saying it was great but unlike this Hoth disaster, you see some effort and thought behind. Also for rather smaller set, it is more 'acceptable' to step aside, especially when its for the seek of inovation. Quote
Flandy Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 "Bob and Tim's suicide mission on Hoth" I think that makes me want this set. It's the Empire equivalent of Dak: Quote

Probably has a lot to do with a certain film out the end of this year which plot revolves around a certain moon sized space station. Quote
