Graham Gidman Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Love the set, but there's absolutely no way I'm paying that much for it. Quote
neoconagenda Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I am kind of glad though that this is the ucs set for this spring because my wallet just saved some money because I will not be getting it. Agreed... Now I can shift funds to the bucket wheel excavator!!! Quote
TheBrickHitHouse Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I think the comments have provided a consensus - we're not impressed. It's not really good enough for Lego to just repackage old sets. The price means only serious collectors will be after this set...and there won't be many of us that don't already have a lot of these parts. I'm also left a bit miffed about the figures - there needs to be some obvious 'uplift' in these premium sets. We now have figures in cheap sets with more printing than the ones in the expensive sets! droid747 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) What sucks though because of no good new ucs star wars set is I have nothing to get during the may the 4th mini figure promo that they will most likely be doing. I hope it is a crappy mini fig polybag so i dont have to get it on ebay. Edited February 13, 2016 by droid747 Quote
mediumsnowman Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) I think this set looks really good as a whole- though there's nothing we haven't really seen before, and the price is a bit high. It's too bad, I had high hopes for this set. Edited February 13, 2016 by mediumsnowman Quote
Cyberfounder Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) Said it before, i will say it again... This set just can't compeet with the Ewok Village. Challenge for expert builders... ha ha ha... April came a little soon this year. Not going to spent €270 on this thing. I will just bricklink some of the figures and maybe the gate. Was expecting so much after the Ewok Village. For an UCS they could have at least added decent gunemplacement and towers... Edited February 15, 2016 by Cyberfounder Quote
Ceroknight Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 After the Ewok Village, this set had a lot to live up to. It's okay but it really could have been more Quote
Mutant Orc Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) Wait a minute I've noticed something I think but forgive me if I'm wrong or someone else has already pointed it out. One of the images show's the little command module (pic 12) with an orange/yellow sticker on the wall at the back. Another image (pic 4) shows sticking the Wampa "cave" right onto the other side of that wall. If I'm not mistaken that's a reference to this deleted scene where Threepio rips the sticker off the door and a snowtrooper gets mauled by the wampa inside- Edited February 13, 2016 by Mutant Orc Quote
LegoFjotten Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Yeah, I mentioned that sticker back in July... Quote
Mutant Orc Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Had a feeling someone would have! I haven't been following the Star Wars forum so I didn't know for sure :D Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I like it, but with some major caveats. Like many here I would like to see something more substantial for the price, perhaps with another Snowspeeder (and crew), or at least another Tauntaun. I'm torn on the minifigure selection. OTOH, part of me feels it really should have included more main characters (Leia, Artoo, Threepio, Chewie), but... well, all of them have appeared in multiple sets already, and it's nice to have the focus be mostly on previously-unrepresented characters or "generic" background troops. I do have a quibble about those, though: Not UCS but I like the set now! Not worth $250 dollars at all but the minifigures are great! Loving the look of the new rebel trooper print The new Rebel trooper print actually detracts from its value rather than adding to it, for me, since I have a bunch of older troopers and I want all my uniformed troops to actually look uniform. If these and my older ones don't look good together, I won't want to use both, which means part of my money is going toward minifigures I'll just throw in a drawer and won't use. That does give me pause for wanting to buy it (not that I'm in a position to afford it anyway). I hate, hate, hate the endless "updating" of perfectly good designs in the licensed lines, at least when it comes to any sort of "army builder" types. There have been several Star Wars sets of comparable size and price to this one, most of which I haven't gotten because I just couldn't afford them. This might be the first OT one for which even if I'm able to afford it, I'll have to think about it - the others were all ones I would absolutely get, just so long as I had the money. With this one, I feel like a lot of what I'd be paying for I couldn't fully use and appreciate, since so many of the minifigures are ones for which I'd have to choose between the ones in this set and ones I already have, rather than pooling all of them together. I'm still looking forward to seeing more of it, though, and I can't say I just don't want it. But it's one I have to think about. Quote
L E G O Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I wonder if Lego 'leaked' the box pictures deliberately to gauge people's reaction. Judging by the feedback so far, they might have to cut the production run in half already. Quote

sasbury Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) I share everyone's disappointment with this set. The Ewok Village was so good, and this doesn't measure up. • I would have traded fewer elements for better scaled elements. For example, one accurately scaled turret instead of two 4-wide ones. • It's time for Lego to update the snowspeeder design. They've been using the same design for about 10 years, and it's not that accurate. The X-wing (TFA) and Tie Fighters have been improved significantly during that time (including new cockpit pieces). • Has Lego seen the DF.9 turrets in the movie??? Lego's versions aren't large enough and aren't designed accurately. • Like the Ewok Village, Kenner designs offered several possible paths forward on this. • It seems Lego opted to make this set more for kids than the adult collector. Flick fire missiles and all. But doesn't ESB have greater loyalty among the adult demographic? As someone has already noted, you can buy the separate sets that make up this set for a lower price. Local Knowledge Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 They did, look at the designer video. There was a designer video? Where? Quote
ryan1584 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 The designer video can currently be found here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2016/02/13/exclusive-star-wars-lego-set-assault-on-hoth/80317552/ One clever thing I noticed in the video is that the Ion Cannon seems to have a rubber band powered mechanism that resets it after firing the two shots. Kristof Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 The 'UCS' label really feels like mistake here - in my oppinion it only raises concerns and affects negatively the overal impression. If this was labeled just as standard, yet massive playset, many of these complaints would not be present. As for me, I can't talk from a customer point - I can't afford such set by any chance, nobody is going to give me that either and it's the same for all other sets above... $150 or so. So I can't say this 'I'll pass this one' thing :). Still, I'll kinda pass it, you know :D This would be dream come true set as for a kid (or young teenager). I can still appreciate the play value but I can no longer enjoy it. And at this point, I really wonder how many of todays kids love the original trilogy of SW as much as we (afols) do :/ Is it still dream come true for them? Another observation that makes me insecure about how well is this executed is the lack of imperial forces. 'Asaault' represented by one gun turret guy and one snowspeeder? On the other hand, I didn't really expect anything much different. I really wonder what some people thought will come - some kind of 10K piece monstrosity with huge hangar and AT-Ats approaching? The designer had probably very tight hands and I really wouldn't like to be in his position for this time. If it werent of that UCS tag... I think I'd say good job. All in all, I guess this will mainly be UCS set as a 'set for Ultimate Collectors' :) Sort of afols who buy pretty much any set from a collector point. But within the company of other sets, this doesn't shine any brighter than average, at least for me. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 At this price point, they should've gone with the interior the way that the terrible-looking $90 Hoth set tried to but couldn't accomplish at its price point. Like everybody is saying, there's just nothing special about this. Sure, a kid could get a lot of play and fun out of it (if the kid has parents wanting to drop 250 on a big Hoth set, which I guess a lot of kids do), but…… this is Assualt on Hoth and it only contains TWO Imperials?? Really? Two? You could see in the designer video that the graphic designer guy was even struggling to hype up the minifigures because so so many of them are not new. Plus, did we really need that many Rebels to only have two Snowtroopers? Make this a real assault and put at least four Snowtroopers and Darth Vader in there for good measure, why not… Plus, Leia. Really, WTF LEGO. Quote
sasbury Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 (edited) Agreed. It's USC label combined with the lack of "specialness" that is causing most of the complaints. What would have happened if the designer behind the upcoming Batcave set had been asked to design a $250 Hoth set? Edited February 14, 2016 by sasbury Quote
Markalus Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 The designer video can currently be found here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2016/02/13/exclusive-star-wars-lego-set-assault-on-hoth/80317552/ One clever thing I noticed in the video is that the Ion Cannon seems to have a rubber band powered mechanism that resets it after firing the two shots. I've already expressed my overall negative sentiments towards this set. However, the firing mechanism on the ion canon is pretty cool, especially the recoil as it fires two shots. Quote
ChiefPie Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 This looks great even though it's not really a UCS. Minifigs are really awesome and the building parts. The price is bad but I suppose that's because of new minifigures. I have been ignoring hoth sets for a while because I'm more into vehicles. I'll probably be picking up the $25 hoth set on May the 4th. So this sets is great but I will not be picking it up. Probably gonna bricklink or ebay those minifigs. Quote
Jbricks Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Anyone notice the blood on Luke's face? I don't think I've seen blood on a minifig before. This set.... I like the ion cannon, the generator, the trench design, the figures, and thecommend console, but for those alone is only pay, say, $100. HARD for me to pass on Wedge, though. Quote
Boettner Builds Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 This UCS is a POS. I get to buy more minifigs now!!! Quote
Brickweiser Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I'm in the minority, it seems.... But I absolutely love this set I think it will go well with the 2011 Echo Base set which I own. The price is a bit steep, but I think it's gonna be a must buy for me! Im with you. Im definitely buying this and adding it to my battle of hoth moc scene. I would have preferred a $500 with more to it though. Quote
Bolingbroke Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 i think most people in here wildly overestimate the cost of new minifigures. at the end of the day they're hardly die-cast, six inch, intricately engineered figures we're taking about here. some new minifgures yeah, big whoop. how much should they cost? 300 euro more? an idea of what other toys on the market cost would be good for some perspective, guys.
