Posted February 21, 20169 yr As the title says, I'm 34 and emerging from life without LEGOS for about 20 years now. I'm extremely inspired by a lot of the MOCs out there and I'm wanting to build up a solid Technic brick collection over the next few months so I can duplicate/build some myself. I've recently snagged the following sets: 2x 8110 1x 42043 1x 42038 1x 9392 1x 42009 I want orange/white/black/gray pieces mostly at this point so I can mod a Mog extensively. Any suggestions on great price per piece Technic sets to keep an eye on? Not interested in power functions just yet. I want to get my technique ironed out before I go blowing up gear boxes Edited February 24, 20169 yr by DFYFZX
February 22, 20169 yr I re-started also a year back. Bought several sets but in hindsight I would recommend getting partlist for rebrickable and shopping in Lego bricks&pieces or bricklink. If you do not need massive amount of sets and plan to moc certain sets only. Already thinking of selling half of my sets. They just stack up :D
February 22, 20169 yr 42009 is an excellent parts pack, although it does have a lot of yellow. If orange and white parts are what you are looking for, the 42052 Heavy Lift helicopter might fit the bill.

I've been spying 42009 sets on eBay but I've yet to be able to get one for what I deem a "deal". I'm sure there's a ton of gears and such that I'll need down the road, it's just a bad time to try and get a deal on one since prices are going up. Missed the cheap sets by a couple months it appears.
February 22, 20169 yr I was in a similar situation about a year-and-a-half ago, although I still held on to my childhood collection. I found myself in a surplus of old-style studded bricks (and the old colours), and pretty much only a handful of bent liftarms that were on the Space Shuttle and Barcode Scanner Truck. I bought myself 42009 (Mobile Crane MkII), 42023 (Construction Crew), 42029 (Customised Pick-up Truck) and 42043 (Arocs). (And 5571 ) I reckon these sets have given me access to a large variety of parts. Whenever I find myself short of a specific part, I now just order it from Bricklink, since I'm now out of storage space of parting out a whole set
February 22, 20169 yr Work with what u've got so far (which is a lot) and wait until after Summer and get a BWE for some deal.
February 22, 20169 yr I started with 42009 because i wanted many gears. After a while i realised that i was wrong with that) I got tons of gears, while using only 5-10% of them. And i'm still lack of some useful gears sometimes. Best way to stack nice assortment of parts imho: get a task and find some solution for it, understand which parts you need for buildng it, found which sets better suited as parts donors, buy this sets. Buying a set without this task leads to big plastic boxes filled with parts that can be used, but will probally never do)
February 23, 20169 yr I would look on http://www.bricklink.com, where you can create a list of wanted parts and then see who has them available for sale.

And I still have 2 large sets and a large MOC that need disassembling...

They just stack up :D I have been back for only about three years now, and I agree with this post. I mean, I think that you need to start off with several sets... but it looks like you have already done that. After having several sets, and around 6-7,000 pieces (which it looks like you already have), I would focus on only buying the parts you need for your builds and buy only through bricklink. I used to go after tons and tons of sets and honestly, I have many parts that likely I will never use. I simply do not have the time. For some, who can build a ton, like put out a huge MOC every other month or so, buying tons of sets is worth it. But for most of us, just get a collection of 6-7,000 parts, and then bricklink what you need from there.
February 24, 20169 yr Author Thanks guys for all the insights! I just snagged a good deal on a used 42009. I updated my first post. I have six sets and 10,000+ pieces to start tinkering with. I can foresee not using a whole lot of the parts, but that's fine with me since four of the sets are current/retired halo sets. Can never have enough "classic" sets;) Anyway, looks like bricklink for the foreseeable future until that fancy new Porsche comes out. Thanks again. I probably would have kept making silly offers on eBay and slowly collecting undesirable sets for no reason. It'll be a lot easier to slip parts by the wife when they don't come in gigantic boxes I can barely fit thru the front door:p
