In which year was the 8450 ('The mission') released? I suspect it must have been 1999, but I do not see it there (or in the years around it)

BTW: I hope that this doesn't pull you back before the hump

If you look WAY back at the beginning of this topic, there was discussion around the issue of what to include in Technicopedia and what not to include. Very early I made the decision not to include the robotic stuff like Mindstorms because that is really a different category. I considered Spybotics and Cybermaster part of that list, and 8450 The Mission is a Cybermaster expansion set. That's why you don't see it on the site.

On the other hand, I also originally decided not to include Competition, Slizer, Roborider, or Star Wars and now you see all of those on my site so there is no guarantee I won't change my mind!

It would be convenient if there was a clear definition of "Technic" to avoid this kind of question, but there isn't. Expert Builder predates Technic so could theoretically be excluded, but I included it. There were technical sets before this even, including the Samsonite gears, but I didn't include those. There are lots of other sets which use Technic parts. There's also Bionicle. I had to draw the line somewhere, but there will always be disagreement. In the modern world, LEGO has finally solved this problem and it is easy to say which new sets for this year are Technic. In the past it was not so.

I know the set was released around 1999 (I designed it the year before the power puller  ), but the reason for asking was that it is listed in the overview page, but it is not listed in the individual years so I got confused...

ANyway, I have no objection to the argument that it is not a technic model (allthough the black 19L flexaxle is a nice unique piece in that set ).

In that case I do have to point out that the main list on the homepage of technicopedia does incorrectly list this set as a technic set

I didn't realize it was erroneously on that list. Thanks for mentioning it, I will fix it.

Also nice to know you are the designer of that set. I did own it at one point and still have the CD that came with it. I contacted LEGO at one point about finding out who the designer of each set was, but they indicated they do not have that kind of information, or at least were unwilling to share it. I find it fascinating to see how each model fits the personality of a designer. Of course, this is much more apparent with MOCs that do not have to follow "the rules".

Nice update, really enjoyed that reading! I did find a mistake though, in wheels and tires for 2000, there's a part that say rubs instead of hubs.

Well, all I'm saying is if you make a Bionicle section, I own quite a few from 2001-2005, and almost all of them from 2006 onwards

I'm wondering if there is an error in the description of "Silver Champion", or am I just understanding it wrong?

"The setup on this model is an almost perfect representation of a real Formula 1 pushrod suspension except for the steering link. The steering is rotated such that the airfoil is broadside to the airstream which would be aerodynamically terrible.

By looking at pictures, it seems to me that steering links are quite aerodynamically aligned. But the suspension links to pushrods look quite terrible, both front AND rear.

Nevertheless, thank you very much for this update, I really enjoyed reading about these gems from my dark ages. :sweet: I was already seeking for Silver champion to add to my collection but after reading about it I want it even more!

Ahh .. 1999 & 2000 - The Rubberband Years

 While slightly off topic but linked to this comment, can anyone advise what alternative rubber bands I can use for 8002 Destroyer Droid? All the rubber bands in the second hand version I got have perished and I don't know what size replacements I need or whether I can get any from TLG direct?

I still don't fully understand how that bed with weight from power puller works. In the animation all bands are loose.

Lego made an interesting design on the trailer for this, to make it work and look right, but it doesn't function like a real power puller.

In reality, the trailer for a power pull does not have wheels at the front (while being pulled at least). There is a weight at the back that moves forward as the trailer is towed forward, which increases the drag since the front of the trailer digs into the ground harder.

Lego used wheels on the trailer, so to simulate the increase in drag, they used elastic bands that are wound up as the trailer is towed. As those tighten, it increases the drag. The battery box moving is just for the visual effect in the Lego model.

I just looked at the model, and you are quite right it is the suspension links. I will update the site.

Official LEGO Power Puller video :classic: :

Thanks! Although I have the tape I haven't seen the video in years because I no longer have a VCR to play it.

I do not think that I can see the combination model from 8020, 8815 and 8820.

Loved that one as a kid.

Cheers,

Ole

Thanks for that. I have two copies of the puller, and i've never watched the videos because my player died about the same time that pvr's were taking off.

I had no idea that TLG actually sponsored the construction of one of their Technic models. Has this ever happened before or since?

I noticed that under the Tow Trucks the 9395 has twin wheels at the back and additional lights at the top of the roof , does it also have V6 inside?

Extra wheels, but no other changes. All together, there are 4 models on the site which have been visibly modified. Can you find the others?

Just remember two,.

8258 - twin wheels in the two rear axles

9397 - rear mudguards, and maybe twin wheels ; extra logs in the rendered model

EDIT.

42006 - PF added

41999 - third party tires and LBG chassis (looks really good)

Wow, that was fast! That's right, 3 models with dual rear wheels (and also an extra diff on 8258), plus the 3rd part tires and black chassis of 41999. I don't count 42006 because the PF are per instructions so it is not a mod.
