zouave Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 My lego fandom started as a branch off of another one of my many hobbys. It used to be I would pour my lego on the floor and leave it there for a week or so. One day I decided to see if there was civil war lego creations online. I saw a few mocs, and boom! I was hooked. Brickmaster Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 My father introduced me into his old collection from the 60's! The old, frail, faded bricks brought me into an entire new world and money spending :-$ Thank you, dad *sweet* Quote
iamded Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Now, let me think. I remember having a lot of Duplo as a small child, and I guess as I got older I moved onto Lego, and so far have never stopped loving it! X-D The thing I think that really got me into it, was the Royal Knight's Castle. My first Lego skeleton, and how I loved it! I distinctly remember building it in my room with my sister, and putting together the skeleton for the first time. So different from the minifigs, yet so Lego! Maybe that's why I love the new Castle line so much, even though the arms are different. :-$ I also distinctly remember popping out the feathered plumes and putting them on the helmets. *wub* Why did they stop with the plumes? :'-( ~Peace Quote
Paradosis Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I first started playing with Lego when I was very young, and I guess I just became interested in it because it was a lot of fun! :) I got some hand-me-downs through my Grandmother, that probably started me off. Then my Gram would buy Lego from yard sales for me, which built up my collection quick. I guess my interestin really got going once I started getting some new Castle and Pirate sets around 1989 or 1990. After that, I had a few solid years of Lego-filled bliss. Then I entered my first dark ages; though the siren call of the brick would eventually lead me back to the light. Now if only I had more money! Quote
Lord Of Pies Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 My father introduced me into his old collection from the 60's! The old, frail, faded bricks brought me into an entire new world and money spending :-$ Thank you, dad *sweet* Same for me, except it was my mother who had the bricks from the 60's! Also I had Duplo which used to be my bigger brothers when I was very young! Quote
Matn Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Same for me, except it was my mother who had the bricks from the 60's! And with me it was the same, my mother had bricks from the 70 and 80's! And they introduced me to Duplo and then I got a LEGO set when I was older and then my mother (and uncle's) bricks because I am the only boy in the family (of children). Awesome. I get all the LEGO! Lego12 Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Now this is a pretty long story......my first set was 7409 Secret of the Tomb. I remember playing with it for days, and somehow it disspeared ...then my mom got me and my cousin bionicles, , and somehow I stopped buying bionicles.. ... But I didn't even actually know about Lego....so then when I was nine I played baseball and kids on my baseball team had Star Wars minifigures and they were trading them, I remember that back then Yoda was rare......still is I suppose, ! So then I bought my first ACTUAL Lego set: 7263 TIE Fighter. It was $20. I bought it and it was a REALLY easy build for me! Then my mom offered to buy it for me! So then after I built it I had the Light-up Darth Vader and the TIE pilot, and I was thinking, how could you trade Lego minifigures!?!? So that's my Lego story! Quote
Pencoin Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 ive been into LEGO bricks before i was born its practally in my blood. My first LEGO bricks were a passed on collection from my Mum and Uncle. I have been playing with LEGO bricks since i was two (and didnt i didnt swallow them of anything (i did that a few months ago ) and ive been using them since though i was mainly into bionicle alot (thats what brought me here) and since i joined here ive got back into System (though i think some of it was down to Agents ) Quote
MoonCheese Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I think my parents bought them for me when I was really young. I've always had Lego around for as long as I can remember (except after I left my parents' house during my dark age, but now at least most of the Lego is at my apartment). Quote
Shoc Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 ive been into LEGO bricks before i was born its practally in my blood. I expect it looked much like this then? My first Lego was probably Duplo, when I was too young even for Duplo probably. I didn't have much Duplo, and I soon moved on to Freestyle sets and parts from my dad's Lego collection. Both of my parents like Lego, so I guess that's why they bought it for me. I just enjoyed making things out of it. I've never had a Lego 'dark age' as such, and probably never will, although I have had Lego Star Wars and Bionicle dark ages, strange as it may seem. I don't think I'll be out of my current Bionicle dark age, as the theme has slowly become more boring since about 2004. :skull: Quote
commanderbly42 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I started playing with Duplo at a young age and built up from there. But, I've been through plenty of Dark Ages and came out of my last one last year when I bought the Y-Wing. Quote
Eilif Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 "Golden years" I would like to thank my parents for skipping duplo, and buying me LEGO at the tender age of 3 or 4. I got my first LEGO in the very early 80's. I'm not sure why they did. None of my friend's were into LEGO, my dad didn't play with LEGO as a kid (though his little brother did), and truth be told, we were on the very edge of poor (i.e. we had used WIC, but not food stamps). I chalk it up to my folks liking "educational" stuff and being aware of the expandable play value of LEGO. Castle and Pirates were my favorites, though I had alot of town and some Space also. I played with them up through middle school, but when I discovered the "fairer" sex, they got played with ALOT less. "Darker Ages" I didn't purchase hardly any in high school, but I still built off and on, and in college, I picked up the unitron monorail at a garage sale and set it up in my summer apartment, though I didn't build much beyond that. In about 8 years of almost no purchasing, I managed to miss Adventureres, Ninja, Stingrays, and Wild West. Ouch! "Reborn!!" At the end of college I got married, since I had a stable location and finances I brought my LEGO from home and began to sort it and build. The next christmas I discovered LEGO store's Pick A Brick and the Engine house and I dived back into LEGO. A year and a half later I joined NILTC and now I have a "structured" reason for building, a venue for displaying, and some new friends. Quote
President of Brick Town Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 (edited) Curiosity and the likeness of something else. Got my first for Christmas 2008. I didn't know why I was in the LEGO section of the toy store when I was interested in planes. Alas, out comes the set 7734 Cargo Plane. I was interested in planes so I thought this was pretty good and it was a building toy.[For more drama, it was squeezed in between the 7994 Harbor and a Coast Guard set I can't seem to remember it.] But the price tag said a translated Indonesian Rupiah to USD of 79,99. So I got a 20 USD Airmail instead. The craze then began... December 25 2011 marks my 3 years of collecting LEGO. I do have a really small dark age in 2009 for like 5 months where video games caught my eye, for the fifth time. Aside from that I lost 7732 temporarily. In Christmas 2009 I bought 3178 Seaplane then 3177 Small Car and finally 7567 Traveller. Those 3 sets revived my love for LEGO. My most beloved set remained to be 7732. In May 2011 I regained possession of my 7732. With the recent addition of 5770 and 10211 my LEGO collecting and building hobby became higher and higher. My LEGO collecting was expected 35% higher this Christmas. Edited November 13, 2011 by President of Brick Town Quote
Jargo Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I was born with a 2x4 brick in my mouth. Well not literally but my older brother had Lego when I was born in 1968 so it's always been a part of my life. This I think is the first set I remember. Or at least my earliest memory of lego besides red bricks is the trailer from this set. Quote
Lobot Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I have two brothers who were a lot older than me, so when I reached 6 or so I acquired all of their bricks (all fairly basic, it was the early 80’s!) which were a lot of fun. One of my brothers was very keen for me to play with Lego and I migrated through the early Space sets into the first Technic ones. I had fond memories of building a pneumatic digger (8851) when I was in my early teens, those were the days! Then I drifted onto other things and passed on my collection to my nephew. A few years ago my wife bought me the UCS Motorised AT-AT (10178) as a Christmas present. She new that I had a thing about Star Wars, and to be honest I think it was intended as a bit of a joke, but I was totally hooked! I haven’t looked back since! Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Early ages - Golden age I had have Lego sets so far as I can remember. Among my first sets were half of 6314, 1760, 6535, 1736, and 6815. I did never stop liking Lego, growing up with themes such as Spider-Man, Star Wars, and trains. My collecting probably peaked in 2006, when the amount of minifigures I owned increased by more than 100%. But then came High School... "Light dark" ages I call this "light dark" because it wasn't dark ages like most people experience. With high school and other interests, my collecting habits began to diminish, reaching a low point in 2008. Not to say much about this period. Renaissance! With the 30th anniversary of SW came the limited chrome C-3PO minigure. I learned about it in 2008, and I had to get one! So, my minifigure collecting was sparked again. Same for my set collecting. The current problem is storage, but I'll figure that out later. Quote
Corweena Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 My parents got me my first set when I was 4.....and many more soon followed. Soon 95% of my allowance was being used to save for the next set. I credit Lego with sparking my interest in designing things....now I'm studying aerospace engineering and will be designing aircraft and spacecraft when I graduate. I haven't bought any sets for quite a while.....in high school I bought 2 guitars and accessories, and now I have a car payment and college tuition to pay Hopefully once I graduate, I can continue adding to my collection again Lego will forever be my favorite toys though.....nothing even comes close! Perry the Platypus Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) I can't exactly remember how I was drawn to LEGO in the first place, but I got my first Classic Space set years ago for Christmas, and the whole LEGO thing just grew on me. I officially stopped buying LEGO for reasons remaining unclear, but two years ago my son got his first LEGO set, and I got hooked again. Edited August 30, 2011 by Perry the Platypus Quote
K-Nut Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) Castle. 'Nuff said. :dlaugh: But seriously. I liked Castle from an early age then went into my dark ages for a few years, found some Star Wars and Indy and here I am now. Edited August 30, 2011 by K-nut Quote
22kane Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I have an older brother ( seven years older ) so his toys became mine. My first sets were his when the minifigures didn't have faces or the bodies as they are today. I became obsessed like many other kids and had a great collection, most of it probably sold at yard sales. I still have a good amount of my collection from when I was a child but nowhere near what I once had. The stuff I miss the most was the space sets that I got from my brother. They used to have these large plates with craters in them to resemble the moon. I remember the helmets didn't have lenses either. Quote
Sokratesz Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Don't remember, I must've been about three years old Quote
AFOL SF Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 ...it all started for me when I was in my sophomore year in high school... that was my first encounter with Lego. I was walking in the mall one day and there was a display of classic space sets being held in one part of the mall. I was immediately attracted to these sets, especially the minifigs. Unfortunately then, I didn't have that much for an allowance (which I spent a big portion in buying books to read)... I tell you, Lego was expensive back then as it is now... Then came 1991, and finally got the chance to buy my first set from the Pirate theme. For the next ten years I'd buy a few sets here and there, especially when there's a sale and clearance, until I got serious with the hobby in the early 2000s. A few years back, my hobby became a passion (in moderation) which I'm proud of to this day... Quote
HighFlyer Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 I was given a massive box of LEGO from a friend when I was young. The craze then began... Quote
