DrJB Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 (edited) I must confess that, like many on here, I'm typically after the large/flagship sets only. The small sets often 'seem' entry level and for a younger audience. Now, I recently picked up two small sets and I must admit I was rather pleasantly surprised. These are the 42045 and 42048. The parts collection and build techniques (especially steering in 42048) were an eye opener. What other SMALL sets would you qualify as a 'must-have' ? PS. Please insert photos to make reading the thread easier. Edited March 9, 2016 by DrJB Quote
RohanBeckett Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 This is a surprisingly good little technic model: Nice colours.. good functionality.. (that red pin-bush is actually a lever to raise/lower the tiller).. the gears/tillers rotate when driven... and the bonnet opens too! Quote

DrJB Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 Yes, 9395 and 42041 were great as parts collection. I used both to build Madoca's SUV. Quote
zweihander Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 9395, parts collection is great. I use the black liftarms in many MOCs. I wouldn't classify 9395 as "small" I really liked 42032. The way they built the functions into the boom is really simple and impressive. Quote
Dafgek81 Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 8459 is my favorite smaller set. Love the functions and playability. Quote
syclone Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 8281 Was my first LEGO set. Very interesting mechanisms. I was four year old child and my parents were amazed that I built it on my own Quote
RPABLOM Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 i think the model is between small and medium size, but at the moment my personal favorite is 42040 - a lot of plates - the "steering" (i dont know whats her name on english for planes) is absolutly awesome, a simple design, but a great idea - really beautiful to see - and parts 6089119 and 4198367 really need them Quote
MacKaiwer Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 (edited) The one and only king of mini sets is of course 9390 Mini Tow Truck http://brickset.com/.../Mini-Tow-Truck Really cool looks and nice functions aka working steering and winch for towing And of course it looks like a tiny unimog Edited March 8, 2016 by MacKaiwer Quote

That set is one of my favorites too, sadly its one of the only recent tractors (If you don't know I love tractors) There was also a mini forklift around that time that I loved. (instructions here http://lego.brickinstructions.com/lego_instructions/set/8290/Mini_Forklift) Both of these are mostly nostalgia though... Edited March 8, 2016 by Buddy010702 Quote
Chr.Maglekaer Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Some of my favorites in the small sets are: 8256 Super Kart from 2009, 8065 MIni Container Truck and 8066 Off-Roader from 2011. I'm love the looks and the features that are built into them. Quote
miguev Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Looking at the ones I own, the 42021 Snowmobile is my favorite among the small ones. I got 2 of them, just for their suspension arms and portals (which then failed to use when I should have :) Looking at the last few years, sometimes I think I should get 42032, just because it's brilliant. If "small" includes it, I also like very much the 42007: Moto Cross Bike Quote
dr_spock Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 9390 big truck little truck by dr_spock_888, on Flickr Quote
WvG_853 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 It is not really small, but one of my favourite non-flagship sets: 8854 (http://brickset.com/sets/8854-1/Power-Crane) Quote
Nick Barrett Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 ^ That's a wonderfully versatile set. Going back a bit further, I love 854 for it's simple fun. Quote
Technic Jim Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Some of my favorites in the small sets are: 8256 Super Kart from 2009 Got to agree. That set was the first one I ever got and it is amazing! Quote
Detzit Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I must say 8067, Mini Mobile Crane. 299 useful parts, nicely packed and lots of functions for the size. Quote
SNIPE Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 (edited) The 42048-1 race cart and the upcoming 24053 volvo EW160E. I won't include the lego 42054 class tractor because I would say thats medium / medium-small not small/tiny Edited March 9, 2016 by SNIPE Quote
Freekysch Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I would say 8420 and 8051. I am a big fan of those sets :) Quote
RohanBeckett Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Here - I made a Brickset Query: Tiny Technic Sets under 200 Parts: http://brickset.com/sets/query-2906 I initially had 300 parts, but it's funny how many old classic sets fit in this!!! I can't believe my childhood favourite universal sets - 8030, and 8050 (with motor and battery box!) were under 200 parts! However, to include the new 42048 Race Kart - 335p pieces, I did another query for <350 pieces http://brickset.com/sets/query-2907 This is even more crazy - Excavator and Tractor, have only 2, and 1 more part than this tiny go-kart!! it goes to show how much smaller/fiddly technic parts are these days.. I know if I wanted to buy a set by number of pieces, which one I'd want! (pneumatic excavator!!) Quote
LucyCol Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 This little one http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/1257_Tricycle 24 parts in total, but still has working suspension Quote
