BusterHaus Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Grum, I was hoping to see pictures of more stages of the build, but you are putting this model together too quickly. Please slow down. Or at least take more pictures so Blakbird isn't forced to provide any more content for this topic. Quote

Yesterday was an unusual day in that building went so well that I got far more done that I could ever have expected. I'll try to take more pictures during the rest of the build. Anyway, we can't expect Blakbird to provide more 8880 content or any other for a while. He has a lot of cleaning up to do Imodium for dogs??? Edited September 3, 2016 by grum64 Quote
grum64 Posted September 5, 2016 Author Posted September 5, 2016 (edited) Build Day 6 - Days build time 2hrs 35mins / Total build time 30hrs 5mins Not as much time to build today as I'd have liked so there's no where near the progress of my last days building but progress is progress and all is good. Our good friend BusterHaus commented that this 8880 thread is lacking detailed build pics and looking through it, I agree. The truth is I meant to take a pic showing each module once assembled and another after placement but I forgot clean about doing so until reminded to by Bart and I thank him for taking the time to point it out. Anyway, working on the principle of better late than never, here's today's pictures. Edited September 26, 2016 by grum64 Quote
BusterHaus Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Thanks for the extra pictures, I never thought you'd take my words so seriously. I enjoyed the pictures in your previous threads, and figured you were having too much fun with this build to take pictures. Nice work on the seats, they look really good. Quote

I enjoyed the pictures in your previous threads, and figured you were having too much fun with this build to take pictures. Nice work on the seats, they look really good. No need for thanks. You were right in that I should have been taking more pictures as I built and whilst I'd like to say it was down to me having too much fun building (which I was) I simply clean forgot to do so. I'm pleased you reminded me but, if there's a next time, please do it sooner The seats do look good, they're some of the best I've seen outside of MOCs. Quote
Edwin Korstanje Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 (edited) Love the progress Clive. The seats are indeed great. Edited September 5, 2016 by Edwin Korstanje Quote
grum64 Posted September 5, 2016 Author Posted September 5, 2016 Love the progress Clive. The seats are indeed greet. Thank you Edwin. She's coming pretty well. I've a free day tomorrow so hope to get a good bit done. Quote
syclone Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 I love how the seats are made, never seen them from that angle. Now this is definitely in my wishlist Quote
grum64 Posted September 5, 2016 Author Posted September 5, 2016 ...Now this is definitely in my wishlist It should be. Before I started building the 8880 I wasn't much of a fan, I wondered what all the fuss was about but now I get it. It's a brilliant, feature packed set and a great build experience. Quote
jorgeopesi Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 I have it, but my seats are no longer white , It remains for me the best Lego car set. Quote
grum64 Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 (edited) Build Day 7 - Days build time 6hrs 50mins / Total build time 36hrs 55mins Another good few hours building today with good progress being made. To be honest I've been a tad worried about this part of the build. Looking through the instructions last night to try and come up with a plan for todays building I came to stage 38, the engine 'cover.' A complex assembly with 14 stages. I won't say there haven't been a few frustrations, there have, but thankfully very few. Looking at the car and the 'cover' assembly I'm really impressed by the use of hinges (and there are many of them) to create the overall shape, it really works well. I guess today we'd use flexi axles. All being well this old girl will be finished over the weekend. Here's today's pictures. Note: I know the Technic sticker is on upside down. It's an old sticker placed across two 1x6 tiles and I didn't want to risk damaging it by trying to remove them to turn the sticker the correct way round. That's something I'll ask Gilly to do. Edwin Korstanje Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Amazing Clive and a good progress today. All that strange angles and can understand some of your frustrations. Quote
syclone Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I never realized that the back had so complex angles! Quote
Blakbird Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 It is really impressive how far you have come with this. I screw up pretty every time I built that back hatch section. It is tricky to get right. Quote
grum64 Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 Amazing Clive and a good progress today. All that strange angles and can understand some of your frustrations. Thank you Edwin. Many's the time I've seen pictures of this set and not really taken to much notice of all the angles. To be honest I'd always thought of it as quite boxy. As for frustrations, that just makes me more determined to accomplish what I'm doing. I never realized that the back had so complex angles! It's a masterpiece of design. It is really impressive how far you have come with this. I screw up pretty every time I built that back hatch section. It is tricky to get right. Thank you Blakbird. The problem I had was I kept breaking the assembly apart when fitting parts to it. I lost count how many times I had to rebuild it. As far as I recall, the only other thing I've built that was this tricky & complex was the rotor head on the 9396. Quote
BusterHaus Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 Oh man, those half bushes with teeth just took me back 25 years. I still have a bunch of them and just love the feel of locking the little teeth together. I hope they didn't give you too much trouble. Quote
Jeroen Ottens Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 As always your pictures take me down memorylane. I had forgotten how many hingeplates were used in this build (but it does explain why I have so many of them ). Great build, looking forward to the endresult. You do yourself proud. Again. Quote

brickless_kiwi Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 Wait till you own a LHD car and drive in RHD country makes over taking rather interesting at times... Quote
grum64 Posted September 10, 2016 Author Posted September 10, 2016 (edited) Build Day 8 - Days build time 2hrs 30mins / Total build time 38hrs 25mins Today I fitted the 'engine cover' and last few pieces to the car. I'm pleased to say the old girl's now finished. As most of you know, I'd never really rated the 8880. I'd read about it & seen pictures and while I admired the functions it wasn't one of those sets that I thought I must have. Anyway, I thought it was ugly as sin. Seeing it in the brick has changed that opinion somewhat. Building this has been a real experience, it's been challenging and at times deeply frustrating but more than anything it's been a joy. I just don't want to see another hinge for a while, this set has 54 of the little blighters. Speaking of hinges, I don't know who designed this set but they deserve praise for such clever use of the parts available at the time. Achieving those lines with not a flexi axle in sight is quite something. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I'll sell this set. Being the dust magnet that I know it is means it won't be sitting on the shelf for long and just keeping it in it's box on a shelf once dismantled somehow doesn't seen right. I'll have to think about it. Lastly, a few thank you's. It was reading Technicopedia a few years ago that persuaded me to seek out this set so thank you to Blakbird for all his hard work. Thank you to Grosse Kind for his build advice (apologies for not building it in RHD ). Finally, a big thank you to all of you who requested I build the 8880. Without you it'd still be sitting in its box, likely never to be built. That would almost have been a crime. Here's the pictures of the finished 8880. Edited September 26, 2016 by grum64 Quote
syclone Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 (edited) Beautiful! That set put the plank very high, I haven't seen a single set that could surpass it, many thanks for the detailed progress photos! P.S: At least for me,the pop-up headlights look really cute on this model Edited September 10, 2016 by LXF Quote
BusterHaus Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Excellent work, Clive. Thanks for taking us through your journey, it's inspiring, and you should be proud of the payoff. If you decide to sell it drop me a line, I'm now fascinated by this set. I won't even mind the tooth marks. Quote

P.S: At least for me, the pop-up headlights look really cute on this model Again beautiful  . Thank you. Pictures really don't do her justice. She's a far better looking model in the brick. Excellent work, Clive. Thanks for taking us through your journey, it's inspiring, and you should be proud of the payoff. If you decide to sell it drop me a line, I'm now fascinated by this set. I won't even mind the tooth marks. Thank you Bart. It's been an experience. This is the first old style Technic set I've built other than the 8461. I've had the set for at least 2 years but being studded I'd avoided building it, I'm really glad that I now have done. I have the 8880's 'cousin' the 8466 which I now look forward to building in the near future. My only regret is not taking stage by stage pictures from the start. I'll let you know if I decide to sell. If I do, you need not worry, I always check for and replace any marked parts on sets after disassembly. Edited September 11, 2016 by grum64 Quote
