Wow, this will keep you busy for a while. Isn't the whole upper arm built off the model?  Have you started planning how to attach it?

It will indeed keep me busy.

As for attaching the upper arm. I've been through the instructions countless times and watched numerous build videos on Youtube I've come to the less than startling conclusion that I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Welcome back Clive (@grum64 ) this is quite an ambitious project! My BWE is still in the box (after 6 months or so). I am looking forward to your progress. Maybe it will inspire me to start mine... Though I have other projects so I may not be be able to start until after the first of next year. In the meantime I will live vicariously through your assembly process.

Thank you or sharing your builds with us! I for one have missed them.

Andy D

I bought the BWE on the day it came out and it's sat on a shelf in my shed until now. Chances are if Jake hadn't choosen this for me to build it'd still be there this time next year!

Thank you Andy for your kind comments re: my builds. While people want them I'll keep doing them.

Welcome back Clive :classic:

May you have many hours of enjoyment with your current build, as others have said it is a behemoth of a set, but it is a fun (if sometimes frustrating) build. I shall watch your progress with interest.

Thank you. I've enjoyed what little I've built so far (sadly no time to do any building today  ). As you say there'll likely be frustrations along the way but it's working around them makes the build that much more interesting.

I'm guessing you have a very high boredom threshold

Build Day 2 - Days build time 2hrs 40mins / Total build time 8hrs 10mins

Not much time to build today. Almost an hour of what time I did have was taken up trying to fit the two small assemblies (first pic below) but a good deal of patience (stubbornness!) had them in place.

The rest of today's building went very well with no particular difficulties. Happy days

Heres today's pics. As with yesterday's pics, I'm sorry about the quality. I've had the lens on my phones camera cleaned but the pics still aren't great. I'm not sure what's going on, I think I'll have to give Gilly's phone a try next time.

Build Day 3 - Days build time 2hrs 30mins / Total build time 10hrs 40mins

From the pictures it doesn't look like much as been done today but I didn't have a whole lot of time today so didn't get as much done as I'd have liked. It's still progress though and that's always a good thing.

Most of todays build went really well but fitting the parts on the stage below proved difficult to say the least, no matter what I tried I couldn't get them on. A coffee break, deep breaths and a few bloodied 'nics' (Jake calls them Grums battle scars but to me their wounds of attrition ) to my hands later and they were done with no trouble at all. Strange that.

Well done, fitting those black parts aren't much fun, which is a pity because they are so useful!

Thank you.

Although those black parts were indeed a pain to fit it was attaching the sub assembly to the main that caused the real problems with these being the troublemakers.

Nice work. Those parts are not easy to install for me, too.  They're up there with part 15100:

15100.png

It's such a small part, but the amount of attention required in aligning it during insertion is beyond belief.  Did you encounter it yet?

By the way, I gave it some thought and I believe installing an overhead crane in your shed is the only sensible solution to installing the upper arm of the BWE.

Thank you Bart.

The 15100 is indeed a difficult piece to fit but I'm finding the 55615 to be particularly so. I think it depends on where it's fitted, what way and what's in the way. I'm sure they'll not all be so.

An overhead crane in the shed to help with fitting the BWE's upper arm isn't as out there as at first might be thought.

The idea's a good one but with an ceiling mounted hoist in our bedroom it could be that the solution has been here all along...

Build Day 4 - Days build time 4hrs 25 mins / Total build time 15hrs 5 mins

Another day having fun (most of the time!) playing with my little ABS friends.

Most of today's building was spent repeating much of the previous day's building which meant coming up against the same problems.

The 15100's were again a pain to fit whereas the 55615 proved to be a far more worthy adversary with each encounter being a battle of attrition with the last being particulaly so. The fight was long and hard but with nothing to show for the time spent a strategic withdrawal was called. Wounds dressed, a new plan of action and a few short skimishes later and victory was declared. This time... With 31 x 15100's and 12 x 55615's left to go I fear my battles have only just begun.

The only other difficulties today were with the four 7L liftarms in stage 60 (page 83). Being fairly deep inside the main assembly they were a job to get to and keep in place while trying to exert enough pressure to fit them. Almost 50 minutes passed with no results before I did what I should have done all along (my head will never save my struggles). I passed a 5L axle though an unused hole in the assembly at the same level of the needed pins. Then the liftarm, held in forceps, was gently guided onto it. The liftarm, now held in place by the axle, was then easily affixed. This was repeated for the remaining 3 liftarms. Hope that all makes sense.

The rest todays building was problem free.

Today's pictures. Apologies for the last picture. It was taken at the end of the building and I was whacked so it was difficult to hold the phone high enough to get the whole assembly in frame and keep it steady enough for it to focus. My bad, I'll try and do better.

You didn't have any problems mounting the yellow ring?*huh* I remember that it was a pain to insert those 5L axles...

Impressive progress nonetheless

Agreed, I experienced the same. What can I say, Clive, I'm really impressed of your progress, and - what I'm sure you have to - your creative processes and planning in order to make it happen.

It's a pure joy to follow your build

Oh, and BTW, I have built the 8880 now, classic set classic fun. The temptation was too much after following your build - 8880 was the Xmas gift from my wife last year - let's say you inspired my wishlist...

Inserting the 5L axles was aided by my trusty forceps.

Impressive progress. Thank you, I'm pretty pleased but there's a very, very long way to go yet.

Really pleased you've now been able to build the 8880. It's a great set.

Build Day 5 - Days build time 6hrs 20mins / Total build time 21hrs 25mins

After a few weeks away due to a broken leg I'm happy to be back building.

Those of you who follow my ramblings may think this sounds familiar and you'd be right, my leg was broken during a hospital procedure last year but this time I can blame no one but myself. Wanting to keep a long story short I'll just say I must be the only person in a wheelchair daft enough to run their own leg over! I'm now the owner of a bright pink (our beautiful 4yr old Grandaughter Penny's choice) thigh to toe cast.

Anyway, back to today.

Building's been really good today with only the tracks causing any real grief. Assembling both sets took well over an hour followed another 30mins or so to fit them. Good job I had over 6hrs to build today.

With the base now complete I'm getting an idea of just how big this thing's going to be. This size was making it a difficult beast to take pictures of but thankfully I've just bought a new wheelchair which has a powered reclining back meaning I can get far enough away from the build to get it all in the shot, for now anyway. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean my photography will improve.

Today's pictures.

Good to see you building again. I won't try to picture in my mind how you managed to run over your own leg *huh*, but I certainly wish you a speedy recovery.

That laptray is starting to look a bit smallish...

It never seizes to amaze me how you are able to put these models together. So keep calm and ramble on!

Jeez, is it the same leg that you broke, or are you spreading the abuse over both limbs? I hope you heal quickly.

Good progress on the model, it is starting to take shape. I forgot how rigid the base is, your pictures reminded me of it.

Thank you Jeroen.

Spare room on my laptray is indeed noticeable only by it's absence. Once the risers for my table have been made I'll be back building on that. Hopefully they shouldn't be too much longer.
