  . Yes, it's not a pretty sight at the moment.They'll get good tidy up when I have time. Thankfully they're not in as much of a tangle as those in the chassis

Building Time 8hrs 15min - Total Build Time 51hrs 25mins

Fitting the sub assemblies around the superstructure, a task that should have been quick and easy but thanks to a lack of clear vision & coordination caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure (a regular quirk of my condition) and my reluctance to stop (there’s that stubbornness thing again) things proved particularly problematic. I put parts together incorrectly & more often than not put them in wrong place and I’m sure I must have broken more parts off the build than I was trying to fit. Take my word for it, reattaching parts for the sixth or seventh time is particularly frustrating. As is usually the case, after half hour or so with my ‘chair tipped back the BP was north of stupid so normal service was resumed and all parts soon assembled correctly and fitted in the right place.

Building the boom was straightforward and, for me anyways, reasonably quick. It's a big ol' thing and feels very solid helped I'm sure by being clad with a plethora of panels and dog bone Liftarms. 

While building I’ve been wondering whether a 3 stage boom along the lines of the one Christophe Moittie came up with for the Ultimate 42009 would be worthwhile addition to the RTC. From what I could see of my U42009 sitting up on the shelf the two booms aren’t too dissimilar in size. I'm curious to know whether anyone else has tried it? When I get time I might try knocking one up just to see what equipping it with a 3 stager looks like. Until then the original will surfice.

With just the superstructure's panelling and the operator's cabin to do the end of this build is in sight.

Building Time 17hrs 15min - Total Build Time 68hrs 40mins

In previous posts you may of noticed that I hadn’t fitted the boom at the stage at which I should have.  This was because it’d have been in the way when it came to fitting the panels around the superstructure. At the time this seemed like a good idea and in practice it was as I got all the panels on with no hinderance from a particularly lengthy obstruction and little trouble. It was a this point I realised that with said panels fitted the hole that the axle holding the boom in place and from which it pivots was to be inserted was covered. Luckily the offending panel could be pivoted up and out of the way by removing a 3L axle with Stud. Cue huge sigh of relief

Fitting the boom turned out to be fun. I tried numerous ways to do it most ending in farcical failure including balancing it on my shoulder only for gravity to do its thing and despite my juggling like fumblings, it ended up on the floor. It's a testament to the strength of its design that nothing broke off or came apart. Anyway, in the end a couple of wheels and a good measure of trial and error proved enough to get the job done.

So, after almost 69hrs this build is now complete. Despite being hampered by mistakes of my own making, this build’s been really enjoyable. Jurgens builds always are.

Fitting all the motors required for this version makes for a very dense build, especially in the chassis. Add a pair of battery boxes (one a 88000), a PF Switch (8869) and a couple of Sbricks (in place of the 4x IR Recievers) and there’s hardly any free space at all. What free space there is a small area in the superstructure in which I want to resite the Sbrick down and back a few studs as I'm not happy with it's position.

This was a great set to start with but the addition of the motors has to me, made it so much better. The functions work flawlessly and, unlike the set on which it’s based, can all operate simultaneously.

The motorised functions are:

• Driving (XL Motor)
• Steering: All-Wheel / Crab (2x Servos + M Motor operating PF Switch for mode select)
• Raise / Lower Outriggers (M Motor)
• 360° Super Structure Rotation (M Motor)
• Raise / Lower Boom (L Motor)
• Extend / Retract Jib (M Motor)
• Raise / Lower the Hook (M Motor)

Jake, George and Penny have been playing with the model all afternoon. They’ve had a whale of a time with it lifting everything from a bundle of kindling to a rather surprised looking garden gnome. When asked if they had fun they all gave it a double thumbs up and to me, that says it all.

Apologies for the lack of finished build pictures. After we’d finished playing and just minutes before I was going to go in the shed to take the pictures our neighbour took out a power line while trying to excavate a tree stump with a borrowed JCB leading to several hours without power.

Note: To the best of my knowledge the outage in South America was coincidental although looking at the size of the pile of dirt towering over our 6ft fence I can’t be entirely sure of this.

I’m busy for the next week so will take more pictures and maybe even try to do a video sometime next week.

The only way I found to fit the boom. Once secured in place a third tyre added to the pile raised the boom enough to enable the actuators to be connected.

As you can see from the photo below, I need to get a bigger sheet of white foam board before I take more pics as the build is far too big to photograph against the one I’ve got.

I don't know about the construction yard but my shelves are heading that way. Another build or two and I'll have to start thinking about getting a few sets dismantled and put back in their boxes

Thank you. I really enjoyed building it. It’s a great model and so much more playable than the set on which it’s based.

I’m looking forward to the Liebherr. It looks like a mighty impressive build.

I wonder if someone might be able to help me please.

I’ve been trying to create 3 images to use as icons to import into my Sbrick profile for the Ultimate 42082 but with no idea what I’m doing the results have been predictably bad.

Having setup sequences (with the help and seemingly limitless patience of Racing Brick) to select each steering mode by the tap of one of three buttons rather than using a slider I’d like to have icons to indicate which button selects which steering mode, Front Wheel, Crab and All Wheel. I found these two pictures online which (without the car outline) give a good idea of what I’m looking for.

 

I’d like the icons to be yellow (I would’ve liked red but when outside yellow shows up better on my mobile's screen) and have a transparent background.

I hope this makes sense.

It’s been almost 4yrs since I got my shed. I didn’t post pictures at the time as there wasn’t very much to see.

Over time the shed’s gotten quite cluttered. The Little Darlings moved in, each with their own building/play table, sets were crammed on the racking, under tables & pilled up on the floor. Then there was the numerous large boxes full of assorted parts and others with the Grandchildren’s broken models. It was in dire need of a really good sort out but we never seemed to get the time.

Then came the virus and since 17 February when our Dr’s advised us lockdown and begin shielding we’ve had nothing but time.

It’s taken over 8 weeks but it’s all pretty much done. All the sets I’m not likely to build for a while have been stored in the loft, the loose parts have been painstakingly sorted by type into tubs and all but one box of the broken models are now rebuilt then dismantled and packed away. I was given an old chest of drawers which is now holds boxes containing my sorted out Technic spares. To say I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out is something of a understatement.

Of course there’s no way on earth I could have done this on my own. I have to say a HUGE thank you to my beloved Gilly who’s been out there every day moving stuff about, helping me sort out parts, boxing them up, rearranging stuff and putting up shelves. You name it she’s done it and always with a smile and never a word of complaint.

I’d also like to thank Tom Alphin, the Brick Architect for his LEGO Brick Labels. They’re absolutely brilliant and invaluable to anyone organising their parts collection. They must have taken an age to produce. Thank you Tom for the hard work and long hours spent creating these labels and for making them freely available for the benefit of the LEGO community. If you’re not familiar with Toms labels go to Brick Architect and check them out.

You’re right, it really is nice job Gilly. I take no credit save sorting parts into boxes at a rate of around 1 to every 5 or 6 of Gilly’s. As for it being tidier last time you saw it, as I recall most of the mess was various parts of your Koenigsegg scattered across my table

Thank you my Friend. I’m very lucky to have the collection I have the vast majority of which I’ve not paid anywhere near full price or value for. Unfortunately the days of cheap LEGO seems to have come to an end.

It is a relaxing place to be. With the radio on and no distractions it’s a great place to build

Thanks boss. The mobile/iPad stand’s great. I build using digital instructions so it’s ideal. I also use it to hold my phone/iPad when taking photos. Doesn’t improve the quality (you may have noticed) but at least it keeps my wayward fingers out of shot

Thank you. It’s a great place to be. Unless it’s hot weather and then it’s a no go area. It was 24° here yesterday but in the shed it was 29.8°

Thank you. Just as we’ve finished the shed the weather turns furnace like making it far too hot to in go there. The thermometer hit 33.8° in there this afternoon and that’s with having had both doors open since around 8am. I’m not wishing time away, life’s far too precious for that, but roll on Winter.
