Mellow Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Assited steering and electric windows ... that confuses me. You have to read it together with the following sentence: "Assited steering and electric windows? Not even in dreams!" That means if you buy a Caterham (the original), you won´t get any assistant systems, even if you want them. Quote
Duq Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I'm very disappointed. By making the whole hood section two plates taller they've killed the proportions. It's probably because of the Mini and the Beetle that it couldn't be British Racing Green or azure with orange but I would still have preferred white with a red stripe like they had on Top Gear. Not sure I'll buy this now. I might start bricklinking the parts to build Carl's version. Quote

I might start bricklinking the parts to build Carl's version. And I already thought that I'm the only one who thinks that this thing looks quite ill-proportioned... While being very excited when the Caterham was announced, I'm rather disappointed now, too. Should also start bricklinking... Hopefully the Saturn V won't get messed up like this... Quote
Mellow Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 (edited) I think the set will be officially licenced by Caterham, in this case they can´t use other colors than Caterham offers to their customers. The Caterham Seven 620 R is available in six colors: yellow with black stripes light blue with orange stripes dark green with yellow stripes orange with black stripes black with grey stripes red with yellow stripes I agree with Duq, that dark green and light blue dropped out because of the colors of Beetle and Mini. The same reason with the red one because of Ferrari and T1. So the only possible colors were yellow, black or orange. I think if made in black, many optical details of the Lego model would get lost. And I also think they didn´t choose orange because of the availability of some needed lego parts. So yellow is the only official color that remains to use, I think. Let´s hope the picture we got so far is just taken from an unfavorable angle. Edited August 23, 2016 by Mellow Quote
Duq Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I think orange was out because of the Porsche 911... Just had a quick look, it's the slightly older R500 that was available in white with red stripes. As that model has been replaced by the 620R I guess Caterham wouldn't be too keen to have it as the prototype for the set. Quote
BrickMonkeyMOCs Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I'm very disappointed. By making the whole hood section two plates taller they've killed the proportions. Agreed. I didn't see it at first, and just assumed it was a poor camera angle, exacerbated by the lack of exhaust on that side. But you're right, and I can't think of any good reason for changing the overall proportions like this. Hopefully it will be possible to modify the set back to its correct proportions. Quote
grum64 Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I've been eagerly awaiting this but now I've seen this picture I don't think it looks anywhere near as good as Bricktrix_Carls original. To be honest, I'm quite disappointed. Quote
Andy D Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Turn on the way (well way, way) back machine. I had a chance to buy a Lotus Super Seven, and didn't! Now I can get a LEGO Cartham, maybe I will buy this, maybe not. I am just happy to see something that reminds me of the Lotus Super Seven. BTW: Back then I think they only came in unpainted aluminum. Ah, the memories! Andy D Quote
Ceroknight Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Looks great! Idea sets are all I've been buying lately. Quote
anothergol Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 It looks pretty cool IMHO, even if the bi-color scheme is boring. I'm exciting by those macaronis in black, that improved the arch. Quote
Artanis I Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 It looks a bit stumpy? Not as keen on the yellow. Nice set, but I would rather see it released in the other colours. Is it definitely only this 1 car? Quote
Kaanere Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Is it definitely only this 1 car? What else would you want? Quote
jimmynick Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 (edited) What else would you want? In the past, there have been Lamborghini sets with enough parts for you to choose to build the car in red or in yellow. I imagine that's what he means: that the Caterham set will let you choose between yellow and some other color. EDIT: Or, rather, that choice is what Artanis I wishes were the case. Artanis I Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Were there not 2 cars on the Ideas submission? 1 car with colour options for body kits or something would've been cool. (Before anyone says "so? Just buy the extra parts yourself, it's Lego" - if the entire model is in the "wrong" colour to start with there's little point buying the set too! ) Quote
Mellow Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 There were two cars in the submission, but I think it was only to show different building options (especially with or without roof top) for the model. I don´t believe that it was ever seriously in discussion to make a set of two cars. ... The more I compare the Ideas submission with the yellow one, I´m getting more and more dissapointed. In my eyes the original submission looks much more filigree. And it doesn´t look as if the yellow one is still steerable... Quote

In my eyes the original submission looks much more filigree. And it doesn´t look as if the yellow one is still steerable... I don't think anyone will like the official version more than the original version submitted by Carl. But looking at Carl's building techniques (and at those used by many other great builders) you have to say that official Lego models are much more sturdy. So it is no surprise that the steering seems to be missing in the official set. Quote
Mellow Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I know what you´re meaning. Details as the steering or the mirrors were maybe too unsteady for official Lego models. Nobody wants Lego sets that fall apart just when you stare on it from the wrong direction. But there are other details changed that were not built too unstable in my opinion. The supports for the head lights for example. In the original submission they were made with ring wrench tools, held by brackets in the side of the engine hood. In the official Model it looks as if they´re using mechanical claw bars on light saber handles. It´s not only far away from the original car´s supports, I also can´t believe this should be more sturdy than Carl´s wrench tool solution. Also the head cushions that are attached inflexible or the rollover bar that is built much too massive now. Maybe it is now better to play with it, but it is not very good for displaying. Quote

The official ones have quite a sizable gap between the wheel and the arch. Edited August 23, 2016 by BrickMonkeyMOCs Quote
Robert8 Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Today LEGO IDEAS made a post on facebook saying that there will be teasers soon and the official reveal will be in 3 weeks Quote
PicnicBasketSam Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Maybe the wheels are suspended a little bit, and that's why they're far apart... but that's unlikely. I mean, it's not like they've ever gone to a huge amount of trouble for a very slight effect like that bef--oh... Quote
Rishab N Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Wow I'm disappointed IMO. Looks stubby and really doesn't stand up to the original creation Quote
Man with a hat Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Hmm. Maybe something went wrong with the pictures. They look distorted. Especially when I compare the pictures at: http://zusammengebaut.com/lego-ideas-caterham-seven-620r-21307-ab-1-oktober-erhaeltlich-11986/ Now those look much better and the proportions seem quit allright! Also they mention a 1 Oktober release. That would be pretty soon. Quote

Especially when I compare the pictures at: http://zusammengebau...aeltlich-11986/ Now those look much better and the proportions seem quit allright! (A bit) better, yes. But still somewhat odd, IMHO. The positioning of the headlights reminds me more of an Austin Healey Sprite Mk. I than a Caterham... And that yellow brick in a place where the front suspension should be is abysmal. I was really looking forward to that set when it was announced, but sorry, in this form I won't buy it. Edited September 6, 2016 by Tenderlok Quote
brickphisto Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 According to a Swiss online shop the set contains 773 parts and costs 59.90 CHF. That is about 55€. Decent price imho. Quote
