I believe in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If they're going to change the faces, hair, voices, color emphasis in costumes, they may as well not call it "Ninjago" and call it something like "Ninja High School Teenagers". I originally became a fan due to the Pilot's presentation of colors, personalities, sense of humor, voices. I am totally fine with Power Rangers colors. They look nice.

Also, I read a voice actor's interpretive thoughts on Ninjago characters, and I couldn't help think this dude didn't watch even one full season of Ninjago and is likely just making up his own spin on things. It was a bit disturbing.

I would not blame kids if they don't like the movie appearances so far. I thought I'd buy a bunch of Ninjago CMF, but now I'm guessing probably not.

Is it though? I mean, Zane has served as comedy relief quite often in the show, especially in recent seasons. Not as much as Jay of course, but they still make a lot of robot jokes with him, and the movie will probably continue that trend. Either way, it's hard to judge the characters from just this one image, so let's reserve our judgement at least until the first trailer.

Primarily comedy relief.

But, yes, we should wait for a trailer.

What was there to be broken or fixed.

The Movie has nothing to do with the TV show, and no opinions on it's themes or characters should be made from comparisons directly with the TV show, as they are two, completely separate, completely unrelated entities. However, as it turns out, one is inspired by the other, but they are in no ways meant to be the same thing. They just happen to have the same name, and character names.

Think the reboots you get of shows like Transformers and GI Joe. The movies are unrelated to the shows, but inspired by them. Same concept here.

Then why call it Ninjago?

That's like saying "Oh, let's make a Batman movie, but there's no similarity with the comics, they just happen to have the same name." At least TLBM Batman looks like Batman. The Ninjago ones... eh.

It has something to do with the branding and the line of toys that TLG planned in the LEGO movie cinematic universe... Besides name recognition, I also don't know what motivated TLG to change familiar characters. While I welcome "Re-imagined" version I don't believe it has to be far off from original.

While we wait for the trailer, here are a couple of new pictures from the movie.

Lloyd looks better in this image than in the group shot, which makes me think that people will start warming up to these new designs once we get a better look at them.

You mean... like just about every Batman movie? Pretty much every single one has reinterpreted its characters in one way or another. It's the same deal with this movie. The characters might not have identical backstories, appearances, or personalities, but that doesn't mean there's no similarities at all.

If anything, a lot of these new appearances of the characters seem more in line with their original personalities. Look at Jay, for example. Gone is the uncharacteristically trendy shaved eyebrow in favor of a somewhat "geekier" look, fitting for his insecure personality as well as his love of inventing and science fiction.

Definitely a better facial expression for Lloyd.

The environment in the second picture looks awesome. Hopefully we can see the trailer soon.

Looks like the movie's synopsis (from the trailer description on Youtube) has been updated:

"In this big-screen NINJAGO adventure, the battle for NINJAGO City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, The Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their inner power of Spinjitzu."

So yes, Spinjitzu will be a part of the movie. :sweet:

I can't find any word related to high school in that synopsis anymore. Maybe they changed the tone of the movie to really focus more on the action?

It's good to know that there will be spinjitzu.

That's a big relief! I was scared they entirely ditched the elemental stuff that got me hooked to Ninjago in the first place! Looking forward to the full trailer! :sweet:

Just came here to say something about the unfortunate negativity surrounding this movie.

I've been a huge fan of Ninjago since 2011 and strive to purchase most of the theme on launch day when possible. I'm an avid follower of the TV show and love the characters and their designs. That being said, I don't understand the seemingly constant negativity surrounding this movie. I get it - change is scary. But many of the arguments here are comparing these new characters to the characters in the show. There's nothing wrong with their designs and personalities - they're just different from the show, which makes total sense. Kids and parents who didn't watch the show before the movie would be horridly confused if they were in the same continuity. In addition, they had to make the movie as different as possible - recasting the same voice actors or making the ninja look like their TV counterparts would only serve to muddle and confuse viewers. That's why everything looks different - to avoid confusion. You're not being betrayed, LEGO is not taking away the show (The next season after the movie has already been written and is in production), they're just making a new spin on Ninjago. So I implore you - give the Ninjago Movie a chance, at least until a few trailers come out or even until the movie comes out. Only then will you be able to accurately judge this movie.

It's bad enough that they changed the voice actors, but using someone as famous as Jackie Chan just ruins any chance of thinking of Wu as Wu.  Now Jackie Chan is the leader of the teenage mutant ninja non-turtles. Couldn't they get Lady Gaga or Beyoncé to play Nya too while they are at it?

The negativity is because there are a legion of fans that would love to see a movie about their favorite show with their real voices, faces and hairstyles.  Instead they get a creepy parody of the characters in an alternate reality.

No matter how bad it looks, I'm definitely seeing it no matter what just because it's Ninjago…

Yes! This

What if kids watched the movie first and were like "I like Ninjago" and then they watched the TV series and got confused by all the character designs? It wouldn't really help the TV series, would it?

At this point I just don't like the movie. It's not that change is scary, and it's not that I've got a problem with them changing things for a different continuity, it's that this does not carry any of the heart NINJAGO had. It's the fundamentals of the story (x amount of ninja + Sensei vs evil dude with four arms) retold as a big-budget, slapstick comedy. This is evident in every facet of the design, the over-the-top jokes such as Wu failing to catch a simple chicken, to the ninja's overdone and wacky hairstyles, to the mere presence of a Taylor Swift song. It's not that it's going to be a bad movie or anything, for me personally the film just doesn't appeal to me. In a lot of ways it's like Michael Bay's Transformers movies or the BIONICLE reboot - you've got the characters, the macguffins - yet you've still missed what it was about. The TV show closely follows "rule of cool" to appeal to kids yet keeps it as just the setting. It doesn't go out of its way to rub the marketing in your face and show off ultracool ninja dudes fighting robots and giant snakes. The conflicts and characters are given relationships that grow and evolve over time, the characters learn and grow outside of cheesy moral lessons and the standard gimmicks of a TV show based on toys (this isn't a constant rule mind you, but it applies most of the time). Here it feels like the opposite: bringing on big-name popstars, famous songs and big-name actors, the set-ups ridiculous and over the top. It's The LEGO Movie With Ninja, not LEGO NINJAGO: The Movie.

Wow dude, you're making a lot of assumptions of the movie based on a thirty second teaser and a short premise of the movie.

Agree with Just2Good - this kind of reaction was pretty much what I was talking about in my post above. For one, the Wu vs Chicken skit isn't even part of the movie - it was just a promo short to advertise the film. Sure, some of the humor in the film may mirror this short - but it's not like Ninjago's TV show didn't do this in literally every scene with Chen's Chair, Day of the Departed's villain antics, and even the most recent season's slapstick generals. This kind of humor, however, doesn't make the show awful - in fact, it doesn't really detract at all.

In addition, based on the description article, the film is all about redeeming Lord Garmadon and bringing him back to the side of good, something that was a major highlight for the TV show's first two seasons. If I didn't think the plot could carry the emotional weight of usual Ninjago before, I do now with that small tidbit. But, if you don't like it, I can't change your opinion. I'm just hoping that you'll see a few more trailers and clips and view this with a more open mind than . you are now.

But there's a much bigger legion called "general audiences" who have no clue what Ninjago is and have never seen the TV show and would be very adverse to a big, new franchise movie about a group of characters they have zero investment in and know nothing about.

I liked it.

I don't know if it's the art style, the character redesigns, or just sheer joy at seeing Ninjago make it to the big screen, but none of the changes are bothering me and I have boarded the hype train.

Eh.. the last synopsis that mentioned it came out, like, the weekend. They probably just didn't see the space to mention it.
