Starscream759 Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 I know I've been following this thread infrequently but wow...this was certainly unexpected there. I didn't think they'd get Jackie Chan to play Sensei Wu and I do think he fits the role. Aside from Michael Pena I don't really know half of the other cast members, the guy playing Jay I kind of remember him as Prismo from Adventure Time the others I'm drawing a complete blank otherwise. I'll reserve my opinion until we see a trailer of the film. Quote
Aanchir Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Where are those from? If they're real, probably from Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. WB is repping a lot of their properties there, including upcoming LEGO movies. Quote
makoy Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 #@%#$ :ugh: :wall: Why the hell is Michael Pena voicing Kai? Why is Jay Indian? The voice actor has Pakistani heritage, not Indian. I did listen to his Comedy Central standups and I can understand why they cast him as Jay. It is not far off from the show. Well... This is... Interesting. I'm reserving judgement until I see a trailer, but I'm quite excited for Jackie Chan as Sensei Wu... :) I'm also excited with Jackie Chan casted as Wu... they could have casted any decent old actor but they opted with Asian actor which speaks volume for what they are going for. Also, Michael Peña as Kai... I think he may compete with Jay with the longest dialogues but I'm fine with it. Quote
gamejutzu Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 lol my comment got buried Why the hell is Michael Pena voicing Kai? Why is Jay Indian? *insert minifigure "joke" * Aaanyways, the thing about Lego, is that you never know who's who, if you catch my cold. Jay may as well be Antarctian for all we know (although I recall that he talked in a New York accent in this one episode). The trailer should be something. But one thing bothers me. If the movie is developed enough to have a trailer, why are the prelims so bad? hmm... Quote

NinjaJayNuva Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Although it's sad that they replace the original casts with celebrities, but the new cast is pretty cool except Cole and Wu. Cole and Wu's voice actors sound nothing like them, especially Jackie Chan, he honestly doesn't sound like Wu, he's just a famous celebrity with Cantonese accent. But the other voice actor's sound pretty legit, they actually sound like the original voices. Quote

After all, in this universe, they are in high school. Quote

They do sound a little younger than the original ones. Go search their names on YouTube, nearly everyone of them are starred in the talk shows. Quote
Capn Frank Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Why is Jay Indian? Because it's an animated film, so it doesn't matter what color his skin is as long as he can sound the part. Such comments will make people think you're racist. Quote
Lyichir Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 I for one am quite impressed with the diversity of this cast, assuming it's legit. I won't even mind if the actors don't sound like the actual TV characters' voices if their characterization itself remains consistent. Quote

It is not far off from the show. My mistake, but I'm still skeptical of the decision, as the character probably won't sound like the original, even though the actor is definitely capable of pulling it off. My apologies, I didn't mean anything along that line. I'm just not a fan of possibly completely changing an established character's backstory and mannerisms. Quote
LegoRomania Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 (edited) Hi,I'm new here. Now,those new suits and hair of the minifigs probably are preliminary. The cast is ok. But,my only problem is Nya,what they did to her? When I saw her,I was thinking that is Cole Edited June 25, 2016 by LegoRomania Quote
PickleManDan Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 When I saw her,I was thinking that is Cole I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm used to Cole being the ninja in black, and Nya being in red/gold/blue. Quote

gamejutzu Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Which is more proof on why I believe these minifigures are incredibly preliminary... Maybe they are trying to give Nya a simpler design. Maybe people will think it's weird if Nya doesn't have a consistent color. I think we can all agree that Cole in black is much better, but for me brown Cole is okay. But what's really weird is the black Nya. Not very water-y. Jay could be yellow, and Nya could be blue. I dunno Quote
DuckBricks Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I guess I'm in the minority that thinks black outfit Nya is actually pretty cool... I know that it doesn't make any sense in the TV show, but this is the movie with a while other canon. She probably won't even be the water ninja in the movie anyways... Quote

gamejutzu Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 What if the ninja do not even have (the same) elemental powers here... You have a point there. But what else could they be? If their powers are any different, it would significantly downgrade the character, not just in strength, but overall appeal of the ninja. Quote

If their powers are any different, it would significantly downgrade the character, not just in strength, but overall appeal of the ninja. I doubt they'd change the elemental powers of the core, original five ninja. Their power is pretty much part of their identity now, and changing it would be very confusing. On the other hand, Nya has been the water ninja for only about a year. She's not as easily identifiable as a water ninja, as most kids know her as either Kai's sister or the Samurai. Since she's assumed so many identities throughout the years, re-doing her identity for this movie seems to be the direction they're going. Quote
npgcole Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 What if they don't even HAVE elemental powers? I'm kidding, they probably will. The elemental powers are a pretty big part of Ninjago. Quote

But she is seen in a lot of disguises. I guess she could just be the fighter with no powers (explaining the "blank" black color as red and blue is too expressive), or the normal mechanic. Quote

Eh, I'd argue that "Kai's sister" definitely counts as an identity, at least to the public (i.e. fans of the line). Given that she was introduced in 2011 as the sister of the main character at the time (Kai) and has only just begun to assume her own identity and character in the previous two seasons. In fact, she even mentions this in the latest season- she's tired of only being known as Kai's sister and/or Jay's girlfriend, which is why I listed it. I do agree with the "no powers" thing, although there's a very real possibility that none of the ninja have powers in this new film and just use elemental weapons. Lyichir Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 There's also the possibility that they want to leave later plot developments from the show for future movies. Even if the movies don't strictly follow the show's continuity or even take great liberties with it, it's possible that significant revelations about the main characters (like Nya being a water ninja or Zane being a Nindroid) could still be saved for potential sequels. Superhero movies do that kind of thing all the time, introducing characters in the heroes' "origin stories" who have more significant hero, villain, or sidekick roles in the comics, in case they want to use those characters more prominently in later installments.
