Captain Genaro Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 A stunning build all around. You did an excellent job of working around the prefab hull's constraints to create a masterpiece. The stern is very ornate (though I'm surprised an Eslandolier would put gold on a ship instead of a bank). The rigging is a nice addition as well. Only suggestion would be to offset the gunports a bit more. On most ships of the line, gunports are not directly above one another. It looks like you've already offset them one stud, but I think it would look even better if you were able to offset them two studs. Have fun paying for the license and upkeep . Quote
Puvel Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 The ship on its own looks great, in combination with the rigging this is truly awesome! Quote
Bregir Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Rumours have reached Captain J. Cooke in King's Harbour that Maestro has launched the most powerful warship yet to be seen in New Terra, and despatched it towards the new world. She is known to be a 55 gun twodecker, and one cannot help but to question the trade company Maestro's motives! Such a large ship seems more suitable for single concentrated assaults than for protecting trade... The balance of power has been shifted, and Cooke will have to petition the Crown to despatch some powerful frigates to the New World! Further, one wonders what King Fernando thinks of Maestro's rise to power... Outside of politics, I must say this is a beautiful ship, Maxim! It shows that much time and love has been put into it, and I really think it pays off. I like the subtle curve of her gundecks and the elaborate ornamental stern gallery and beakhead is fit for a flagship! It is a shame those fences and windows do not come in dark red, but I think it works pretty well with red too. It is cool how you have included guns in the great cabin, and I like the open deck under the boat. I would suggest carrying the boat upside down, though - otherwise it is likely to fill during rain... (Well, a Corlander-built boat would, I am not too sure about Eslandian craftsmanship... ) Presentation is good too, but I would have liked to see a little more crew on deck and in the rigging. Currently she looks a bit underpopulated. The rigging is very very good too - and I believe you that it took 2 days! Did you try punching out the bowsprit after finishing? I did that twice on my soon-to-be-posted snow... Result: Two (technically, three, as she is a snow) masts fallen over, and a lot of rigging to redo. And that far from as elaborate as yours! I am loving those shrouds with their ratlines, and I am happy to see you have included fore- and backstays - it looks like you have been researching a lot! Well done! A few constructive comments for your next SOTL. (I have no doubt that Maestro will field more... Trade company? Yeah, right! ) It seems to me that her lower masts are a bit too short. That is what gives your lower shrouds such a flat angle, and makes your courses look very small compared to the topsails. (Judging by the placement of her yard arms) Further, it means that the gaff for her spanker sail is very low, leaving very little space for that rather important sail. Should we really go down the realism lane, the masts should be divided into separate spars, like you have done with the bowsprit, but I am not sure how it would look in lego. Lastly, she seems to be riding rather high, which gives her a slightly chubby look. (No reflection on your fiancee, mind you! ) Typically, the lower tier of gunports would be very close to the water, and I wonder if not that should be possible to do with your current technique? (At least, closer to the water) I would then bring down bow and stern as well, but I see how that would take away some of the curve. However, even the middle of the gundeck seems like it could be lowered by one, or even two bricks, which I think would give a more harmonic look. She does look a bit bulky, currently, and like she would be rather tender, prone to heeling over in hard weather. On the other hand, there is no risk of flooding by opening the gunports, as she carries them so high! But perhaps this is only due to her not yet having been provisioned for a long spell in the new world? All in all, great ship - and now I am certain I will have to build a frigate when I return to my bricks. While a 28 gun frigate will be no match for the Margot in the case of war, two frigates, or perhaps one in consort with a large sloop, would be enough to at least restore some balance of power! Quote

Maxim I Posted March 31, 2016 Author Posted March 31, 2016 Margot is eeerrrrrm one eeeeeerrrmmm big boned lady That`s a mighty fine ship of the line you build there matey, looking forward to see it for real, real soon I am not really looking forward to it I hope she will survive the transport... This is a massive ship and the first of your fleet that I really admire. Well done Sir, hope she'll be save in those dangerous waters of BoBs! Thanks Kabel, even I am not entirely flattered this is only the first ship you admire of my fleet Very nice! That's a mighty escort for sure. The only problem might be paying the upkeep! Well, first things first, I fear licencing will already be a challenge That is a beautiful ship Maxim! Awesome build! Thanks Mike! Spectacular! Let the arms race begin! I am glad I managed to be first, she will be remembered in history books now for sure Very nice and very large ship Maxim, the colors are excellent, and those guns will surely pack quite a punch! The detailing on the stern is probably my favorite part, but the section under the bowsprit is superb as well! A few pieces of advice would be to make the ship either a bit wider or lower in the water - I can't say that she would actually have any problems in a high sea as my knowledge on the subject is too limited for that, but I do think it would look better like that Do learn from my mistakes and don't make it over 18 studs wide though! The second row of gunports would also look better (IMHO ) if it was a bit longer than the first, instead of being so nearly exactly the same! And are you ever going to unfurl those sails? I would love to see it with them all out if you could! Excellent job here anyhow, though, and congrats on beating me to posting the first ship over class 5! Yeah, certainly after seeing the HMS Enterprise, I agree with your advice. I wanted to keep it simple (well for this size hahaha) and use prefab hulls. For myself, I know this is the limit with the prefab hull possibilties. The moment a ship will be bigger, brickbuild hulls will be needed. Maybe my next ship will be with brick built hulls. ... About the sails, I am not sure yet, unfolded sails do a lot of harm to visibility of everything next to a ship (especially in big lay-outs). The moment I saw the teasers of the upcomming ships, I decided it was time to lock myself in my room for 2 days in order to finish her hahaha. I am really happy I am the first Excellent ship Maxim! She's a beauty! That colorscheme is lovely - particularly all the dark red and gold. The hull looks good - a bit tall perhaps but otherwise very nicely shaped (although she almost appears too short in length - perhaps a function of height more than anything). The cabin is fabulous and manages to look well balanced despite being so large. I like the CMF figurehead and lovely custom rigging, and she's definitely well-armed. I'm not too fond of the anchor - the concept is nice but the shape doesn't quite do it for me. The accessible parts are nice. Overall she's a magnificent ship. Be careful what you wish for... Excellent work. Keep it up. Thanks CptD! It was constantly a fight between playability and esthetics... This is a very fine accomplishment Maxim. I'm still in the initial Bricklinking (yes, it can be verb) stages of my two decker. Give me 6 month and you'll have a proper dance partner. It will likely take that long to save up the license fee anyway. I am already looking forward to what you are coming up with! Amazing ship! Thanks! She is a stunning beauty for sure, amazing work! Thanks as well :) What a massive and beautiful ship! The colour scheme is different from the usually white/black or yellow/black, but it works really well and makes the ship distinctive! I think my next one will be with tan instead of dark tan :) I got a lot of those bricks thanks to Kaliphlin Amazing! I'm glad you can show off the interior as well. But overall, truly amazing work. I'm glad she's on our side! Hahaha thanks ! For Eslandola! ... and proud you may be! Excellent work. Four months of work - I should think so. But the result must be more than satisfying! Yes indeed sir! She stands now in our living room. Every now and then I catch myself staring at her while smiling satisfied I sure wouldn't want to meet this beauty if I were a pirate on the high seas! Great work Maxim, looks very formidable and the colors suit it well! Nice job on the rigging too! Thanks Kai! Oo! A fine mighty ship! Great job on the design, colors and ofc the "dreaded" rigging! I learned a lot for my next ship But still, I hate rigging... Luckily the endresult is worth it! Awesome! Although don't get to cocky, who knows where Hurricane Helga will strike next!!!! But for real, I am proud of you man! Great work here, this is one of my favorite builds you have ever done, and it really ups the ante for the whole project! The "Margot" Class Ship is definitely a beauty. But... I hate to break it to you, but every navy has 1st rates back in Halos! This is the first SOTL in New Terra though! Even Mardier has not sent one out there yet! She won't be sailing out this month I fear... Thanks for the nice words! Hahaha, "Margot" Class will be the first known class after class 5 in the Ship Index Now I have to wait until I got an idea of licencing costs, cargo value, speed value, gun value, ... Wait, what? Every faction has 1st rates... Ah daaamned... But still proud to be the first in New Terra!!! This ship is a real beauty! Thanks! Incredible. 4 moths well spent and that rigging is fantastic! Thanks! Don"t worry Ska, MAESTRO has more ships of this size (just maybe not this well armed) coming:P Great work Maxim! Really liking how you managed to do the sides with all those plates, adds another layer of great detail to the ship. The lower gundeck seems to be a bit cramped though...:D The rigging is absolutely fantastic, I"m already fearing it! However, I think your first steering wheel was better than this single, small one. Let's rule the seas!!! The fact is, the lower deck is higher than the middle deck But it is maybe not entirely noticeble on te pictures. The space between the guns (who are placed on a higher level of 1 brick) is minifig height. It was better, but then again the colour didn't really matched. And to be honest, I forgot the steering wheel till just before the pictures, so I kidnapped the steering wheel of the IFS Kudos on a very cool ship, and congrats to having launched the first SotL in the waters of New Terra She's on the top end of number of guns on a prefabs-only hull that still looks harmonious. And I really dig her colors, the dark red along with the tan broadsides, highlighted by golden parts - beautiful! Not a fan of the red fences for side gallery windows, but that's just a matter of taste. Great job rigging that pretty lady Just, you could have added a spanker (sail) to the mizzen mast. Or is there one meant to be attached to that boom? If not, that 'useless arm' is quite an homage to every official Lego ship ever made Four months that were worth the time spent! I hope hurricane Helga or her offspring fear her! Thanks Indeed, as said earlier in this way too long post, I don't think one can make it bigger on prefabs. The red fences were the only solutions I could find for old windows with a curve. If I ever find a better solution, I can easily change it as those sides are turnable Not sure yet what I will do with the useless arm :p The explanation of homage works fine for me hahaha It's been nice to see this coming together and the final result is lovely I hope I get to see it live at some exhibition in the future...? I really hope so as well. That was the plan to only take her to Skaerbaek. As said to Tomsche, I really have to find a solution for transport. But maybe I just gonna try transporting her a few times around the block and if she survives it, she is travell worthy :p If she is not, I will have to spend 2 more days to rerig her... help She will be in Antwerp for sure!! A truly impressive lady Sir! Congrats on being the first ship of the line here, and such a great first she is too! The colour scheme is superb and her gun decks are very impressive. The way you can access the interior is inspired! Thanks! I find it very cool myself I can remove one of the sides Wow...just wow! I am stunned by this build. Brilliant. But, putting my patriotic Corrington hat on; to crew this ship you need about 400 minifigs, so I reckon you can't put to sea until you've got them! I used to be an army collector, so I got around 1000 minifigs from Medieval and Age of Sail times. So don't worry about that Great job. Congrats on the first SOTL. Appreciate your effort on the rigging and putting in those ratlines. You have raised the bar and the crew's bar bill is going to be expensive. Yeah, let's hope we won't need to raid other faction traderuns But as long as she isn't licenced, I don't have to worry about that A stunning build all around. You did an excellent job of working around the prefab hull's constraints to create a masterpiece. Asgon Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Awesome Ship. Great rigging. Please give us a picture with all sails, I imagine it would be stunning . Quote
Captain Dee Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I want to comment on the bulky look of this fine vessel. This particular way of building (going high on the prefabs) results in something closer to a full-hull model than a waterline design (even if the prefab curves aren't quite right for that) and it's important to consider this when commenting. There's no way a two-decker would ever ride that high; I suspect the waterline would be somewhere around the area where the brown of the lower hull gives way to the colored section above. The change in curvature of the prow is another really good indication if the approximate location of the waterline. And even if the decks are still a little high, it's good to consider the difficulty of building a big man-o-war on those hull pieces. Yes, it's bulky - but they all were when viewed in full, either prior to launch or in a drydock. She'll make a fine display piece as shown. Quote

It is indeed a shame the prefab hulls are not realistic in that point. It would have been better if there was no curve, so it really looks like the ship sails in the water. On the other hand, I do understand TLG, as thanks to this curve, a pirate ships looks like a pirate ship for kids... All their prefab hulls are made for display models and not for realistic "ship in the water looks". As you said, it is very difficult to maintain the balance between highth, width and length. I redid a large part of the ship when it started to turn out to high and to small. Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 This is tremendous! I'd like to complement you on building such a well balanced ship of the line with (assuming I counted correctly) only five center hull pieces. You made some rather bold decisions regarding deck height in order to keep her from getting too tall, and I think they paid off quite well. Thank you for posting this link on the MOC thread, or I never would've seen this. Quote

A sixth one would have done bad to the balance of the ship. Normally all decks are 4 studs high, historically accurate as sailors could not always stand up right in the decks. Quote
