Flossie Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 I don't understand why they would remake this set? Very strange decision I do not think it will be a remake as the previous version was so much larger than the existing Creator cars. Looking at the projected price I am thinking it will be similar to the size of what has been released recently as the old Beetle has over 1,600 parts and was 63cm long.
Sven F Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 I hope it looks nothing like the last one which was basically just a brick sculpture.
Blondie-Wan Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 I don't understand why they would remake this set? Very strange decision I totally understand why; it's one of the most iconic, distinctive and beloved cars ever. That said, I'm kind of surprised TLG still wants to do any VW sets, after VW's recent scandal tainted the brand. I kind of thought LEGO would forgo doing any more Volkswagen-related sets, at least for a while.
P3_Super_Bee Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 What if it's the new bug? I could handle the "New" Bug that came out about 10 years or so ago. Not sure I'd buy the current model that looks like someone dropped a weight on top of it and squashed it. Though would prefer the classic Bug. Which I think it will be. Considering the VW Camper Van T1, and the Mini Cooper were of classic designs, not newer models. Which seems to be so far the case. A "Classic Car" line so to speak. Even the F40 fits in there as a classic supercar.
Mellow Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 (edited) That said, I'm kind of surprised TLG still wants to do any VW sets, after VW's recent scandal tainted the brand. Maybe it´s just a try of Volkswagen, to raise their pupularity. On the other hand, why should Lego care about the emissions scandal of Volkswagen? It´s just about wrong emissions values, nobody died at it, so there´s no real reason to ban the Volkswagen brand out of children's rooms. I don´t think, Lego would produce an new Volkswagen set, if they weren´t sure to be able to dispose it. Just have a look at what prizes were paid for the original set (10187). Prizes about 900€ were not unusual for unopened boxes, even for used sets some people pay 300-500€ or more... Remakes of popular sets are also a good way to stop exaggerated reseller-prizes. I don´t want to know, how many of the more expensive sets were just bought to resell them with profit on Ebay. Edited April 12, 2016 by Mellow

It´s just about wrong emissions values, nobody died at it, so there´s no real reason to ban the Volkswagen brand out of children's rooms. In the first place, emissions are a concern, at least for many if not everyone; that's why the emissions standards (at which VW cheated) exist in the first place. Secondly, what VW did was clearly wrong, and companies generally tend to avoid publicly associating with other companies when they garner bad publicity over ethical misdeeds. TLG would like to avoid doing anything to taint or damage their own brand; presumably they just don't think a VW set will do that. They could well be right (and in fact, given all the market research they do, I'm confident they have a much better idea what will or won't be good for their brand than I do). I'm just surprised, that's all.

It´s just about wrong emissions values, nobody died at it, so there´s no real reason to ban the Volkswagen brand out of children's rooms. Not to get too off topic, but there has been some analysis about the number of possible deaths from lung cancer due to the increased emissions, it could arguably be more than safety related recalls. But in general I don't think the classic Volkswagens are really impacted by the scandal since they existed so long before it happened. LEGO might not want to put a GTI in Speed Champions though. For me I'm more likely to buy this than any super car sets. I'd prefer they made more cars that many people own(ed).

Not sure I'd buy the current model that looks like someone dropped a weight on top of it and squashed it. Nearly 20 years ago, actually (started in 1997) That was the "New Beetle". And in 2011 they made a new model just called "Beetle".

And it is not as if those emissions were too high for a generally registration of the car, it would just slide down to another tax class. The real scandal about Volkswagen is not about the emissions, it´s much more about the cheating they did. And those possibly deaths... There are so many possibilities for getting any form of cancer (including eating sausages), it´s impossible to assign it to one possible factor... Howsoever, the Volkswagen Beetle is an iconic car (with emissions values miles away from everything sold in the last 20 years) with many fans and collectors, that has nothing in common with Volkswagens actual problems. I still can´t see a real reason for NOT producing a new set. I just wonder, if it is really a 1:1 remake of the old set (10187), or if we´ll get a new designed set, maybe matching to the size of the T1 camper, Mini Cooper or Ferrari F40. We will get a new designed set matching the size of the T1 camper van, Mini Cooper and Ferrari F40. I'm hoping it will be the classic Beetle.

Withacee Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 What if it's the new bug? They wouldn't do that to us, now, would they?Classic bug is the only option, as far as I'm concerned. And if not, I'll solemnly swear never to buy LEGO sets ever again. Well... for a week, at least.
Emmi Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Yeah. Anything other than the classic bug would be a big shame!
Cwetqo Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Wasnt it said that it will be Herbie from well known movies? I hope not.
CM4Sci Posted April 15, 2016 Author Posted April 15, 2016 No. It will not be Herbie. I swear it won't be... it better not be.
Emmi Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Gosh ... hopefully it's NOT Herbie, that would kill every excitement I have for this set.
Mellow Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Herbie... Weren´t the Herbie-movies produced by the Disney Company? And wouldn´t it be a great deal to produce a set with a car from a Disney-movie when you have an existing Disney-licence anyway? A frighteningly possible scenario in those times, isn´t it? Let´s hope we´ll get an unmodified VW Type 1
Blondie-Wan Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Wait, why would a Herbie set be bad? That said, if it was described a a "VW" set rather than a "Herbie" one, I'm sure that tells us all we need to know.
CM4Sci Posted April 15, 2016 Author Posted April 15, 2016 Because I don't think there is any audience for a Herbie car. I would not buy one. I'd buy a Beetle. A plain, normal looking Beetle.

Okay, but that doesn't make a Herbie set "bad". I don't know that there's much of an audience for a Herbie set in 2016, either, unless it were a limited run thing through Ideas (in which case there should be enough of an audience for the smaller run), but unless you personally stand to benefit when a LEGO set sells well, I don't see how that's an issue. And I think right now I'd rather have a Herbie set than one of a regular VW bug, actually - especially since a Herbie could likely be converted into a regular Beetle much more easily than a regular Beetle could be concverted into a Herbie, anyway.

Mellow Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Wait, why would a Herbie set be bad? I´d prefer a Beetle in a more pleasant color than white. I always liked the two-color scheme of the 10187 Set, but I´d also like a plain color if it is a more classical color. A classical Beetle with the pretzel-back-window and the smaller backlights would be great (even if I don´t believe in that).
Fuppylodders Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Kinda strange really... I didn't care much for the potential of a beetle being released again... but knowing *potentially* it could be Herbie, I'm suddenly interested... although just hopefully not with those eyes where the headlights should be. Herbie never had eyes... But then I grew up watching Herbie with my grandparents so I kind of have a link to preferring it to be a Herbie...
