My thoughts:

Brick Bank, spectacular! I will be trying to buy this one sometime this year.

Ghostbusters HQ, meh. Very pricey to bank of 80's nostalgia. It's a good model; but as a "'millennial' (how I loathe to use that term...), in my mind Ghostbusters isn't that huge part of my life. Honestly I would have jumped to buy a large Back to the Future set a lot soon than Ghostbusters; especially since I feel BTTF has held its appeal into my generation.

Batcave, it's cool, but I don't have that much interest in the subject to buy it. I definitely understand the appeal though (I would buy a Tony Stark D2C Mansion in a heartbeat though... Must be a matter of personal taste)

Hoth, the pariah of sets this year? Perhaps. Unlike other FOL's, I don't own a lot of Hoth sets, so the only 'repeated' object in the set is the Snowspeeder. Despite that, I get the impression that I could buy similar stuff from previous sets on Bricklink, and MOC my own Hoth that will look better than the official set.

The Village, I'm surprised I actually want this. I like playing Minecraft, but all the previous sets had no appeal to me. But the Village caught my eye instantly. It's big, it looks like a major game scene, and the minifigures would basically in one purchase give me everything I wanted without buying dozens of the uglier smaller sets. I'll be considering this one.

I'll wait for info on Big Ben, the Beetle, and the Carousel to comment on those:

Cinderella's Castle: If this is based on the structure in Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland, I'm going to flip! (If it's based on the cartoon, meh I'll pass). I hope for a $150-$200 Castle based on the park with high detail and decent playability. I would have preferred Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Anaheim, but that's a matter of personal preference... Anyways, I hope the set comes with some very "Disney Parks" looking figures, Mickey in a tuxedo, Cinderella, and a bunch of families of tourists. If this set lives up to its name, I'll ask for it in a heartbeat!

Winter Train: I have bought every D2C train since the Emerald Night, and I am excited about the rumors of a new one. Another instant purchase for me!

Glad someone made a thread like this - here's what's on the list so far -

CM4Sci: is the name right? As Jacob/xboxtravis states, Cinderella's Castle is located at Walt Disney World, not (the original) Disneyland, that is Sleeping Beauty's Castle. I'd be surprised Disney allowed that specific tiltle unless it is branded as Tokyo Disneyland's castle.

I'm still intrigued about this and am considering it, depending on the set details.

One other question, do we know if it is minfig or minidolls?

Personally, I think Brick Bank and the Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters are spectacular sets, some of the most impressive I've seen. The Brick Bank, like all of the Modular Buildings, is spectacular, and I also believe the Firehouse is well worth its price, from what I've seen. I'm busy catching up on the Modulars right now, because of just being back this year from my Dark Ages, but I have the feeling that if I don't get either, I will deeply regret it - particularly the Firehouse.

I would not at all be surprised if the Firehouse became one of those beautiful sets which people regret not buying once it retires.

Now, Assault on Hoth, the Batcave, and The Village: I cannot agree more with the criticism of these. Assault on Hoth does indeed seem to be a collection of previously released sets and does not look good enough on display to justify its pricing; The Batcave is bare and looks terribly unfinished, making it also be a poor display set; and the Village is actually alright, but has such a hefty price tag for being a box of extremely common parts.

I am looking forward to seeing the Winter Train and especially the Carousel, because I missed out on the old set.

Overall, is it a slightly lackluster year for these huge sets? I think so, yes, but the overall quality of Brick Bank and the Firehouse, coupled with the quality of many of the regular release sets, make it perfectly fine for me. Less money to spend (money that I really don't have) - the fewer awesome LEGO sets, the more likely it is that I can actually afford to pick up the ones I want.

Brick Bank is fabtatsic. The build was great & techniques were fun(the teller window section especially). Asto the article's complaint about play features. I don't see how they're a problem when they don't detract from the set in any way. The "money laundering" I find s quite funny. Pales in comparison to last years little bit of ingenuinity with the smuggling bit integrated in. I don't understand how he thought the added play feature ruined the build or design on this set. The laundry & deposit boxes would be the same either way...same woth the chimney...

Ghostbusters HQ. If I had the money & was caught up on my purchases, I would've bought it more than likely. I would be hesitant because of price. Because I'm not a die hard fan, but at building itself is great. The detail is worth the price

Assault on Hoth. Snooze fest. It's great for expanding a Hoth layout, I'm sure you can buy the individual sets cheaper than this though. The only saving grace is the shield generator & ion cannon. Not enough to warrant a purchase though.

Batcave. Pretty mich the same as GHQ, but more likely for me to buy as its Superheroes, even though I ne er got into the show much.

Village. Looking at the sets, I just don't get it. They're somewhat neat looking...just not worth it to me. Clearly that appeal ism or there because I don't play the game. This set, has a cool look to it, more so than the rest of this line.

The article feels more like a "I haven't got what I want so I'm going to have a hissy fit about Lego declining" rather than a well written article.

I quite like all the D2C sets this year, Hoth is a disappointment, but I do like that minifigure range.

Yeah, it's just a whiney post. What's he doing still running a website called 'brickfanatics' if he's not yet spent a penny on Lego this year? I mean really? Not even from Bricklink? Even those who grumble about what Lego releases have probably bought something this year.

To me a D2C is an "announced" exclusive set that is sold only in LEGO Stores and online. Like Ghostbusters, Temple of Airjitzu, Batcave, The Village, those are all D2Cs.

I while ago I wanted to post a compilation thread for all the D2C's sets released so far (like this one) but I was having a hard time making the list because the definition of a D2C is somewhat confusing

So it's garanteed that Brick Bank is a D2C? I really thought it was a limited-time exclusive, and that it'd appear in other shops, just like all the other modulars. Wasn't the Detective Office initially exclusive to Lego's shop as well? I remember I couldn't find it anywhere, and bought it in one of the few third-party Lego shops (which too have Brick Bank, but even more expensive). Now the Detective Office is pretty much everywhere.

Sucks if I have to pay 20eur more (even though it's still a good enough price) for it than in my neighbor country, only because I can't buy from that country's Lego shop.

As for where I'm at, the only place where I can go into a store & walk out with one is a Brand store. I have seen adverts in store, Target, that say you can order the exclusives. Toys R Us & Barnes & Noble offer them on their website. None are physically in stire however.

Even the other modulars are technically classified D2C sets as far as Lego is concerned. I'm not exactly sure how the system of other stores stocking them works, but it doesn't change their classification.

Looks like Brick Bank finally is on amazon.de, for 150eur (although not in stock, but I could order it). So not D2C for that long.

Amazon does not disqualify a set from counting as D2C, particularly since D2C sets on Amazon are either fulfilled by Lego themselves (meaning that TLG is the one making the sale through their own official Amazon storefront) or are being sold by resellers (who buy the sets at cost from either Lego or other retailers, and do not qualify as retailers themselves any more than your average Bricklink seller).

But here it's sold by amazon.de, with low price & free delivery. Of course it already was on amazon in every country, sold by resellers at crazy prices - that didn't count.

Since it's not sold in any other shop yet and not in stock at amazon yet, I believe amazon is simply taking preorders for it. In any case, I got it for 150eur - 20 less than in my country.

I'm afraid it's already gone. Well I hope Amazon is gonna send it - maybe it was there by mistake.

I personally am most excited for the 10252 Volkswagen Beetle. Reading some of this thread it seems that many have forgotten that it is all about the personal tastes of the builder. Just like anything else what some would love some hate.

D2C'S this year are great, there almost fantastic. But there not D2C's. This year Lego made some sets that didn't have to be D2C's. The brick bank, that could have only $50. The assault on hoth I would say $120. You get the point, it could be just me. My first D2C was the temple of airjitzu and that was a FANTASTIC set.

Posted

Brick bank $50?? What are you talking about?

No I'm saying that Lego could have only made a bank for $50 instead of a modular

Lego can indeed make banks at lower prices. In fact, they've done so in the past. But the appeal of the Brick Bank comes from it being a modular, with all the added size, complexity and detail that entails.

I don't at all understand the implication that it's not a true D2C just because it could have been done at a smaller scale. You could practically say that about ANY modular. Palace Cinema, Pet Shop, Grand Emporium, Parisian Restaurant... none of those are subjects that could not possibly be depicted at a smaller scale. But the fact that they were done at a larger scale is what makes them special.

Damn, amazon.de has just cancelled my Brick Bank order, I wonder what their entry was about when I ordered it.

I still won't buy it for 20eur more because I'm in the "wrong" country.

But that's the whole thing. Amazon.de isn't selling Brick Bank, but a 3rd party seller is selling it through Amazon Marketplace. Apparently that reseller doesn't want to sell it to you.

I know what you mean. I refuse to buy the Brick Bank for €170 in The Netherlands when it is sold in Germany for €150 ! I'll just have to plan a day trip to Oberhausen some day and buy it there, next to other sets that are much cheaper in Germany than they are in The Netherlands.
