Captain Braunsfeld Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 "It carries a bucket of water", Alberto da Pontelli exlaimed! (Some parts of his laboratory looked a bit sooty as results of the previous experiments...) "And the extract of rat liver is also working as a possible replacement for the Oleon wine! Both produce fine phlogiston when burning" "And the Royal Society has invited me to Arlinsport. This is so exciting. I need to build something bigger out of this!" And so he created the first Eslandolean airship, the "Spirit of Eslandola", which spent some time hovering above his house. (The cat was needed for balance purposes) In fact, it was just hovering and Alberto realized that he just could not tell the thing where to go. He was completely depending on the winds. No way he could make it to Arlinsport with the "Spirit of Eslandola". He would have to take a (normal) ship. "How shall I name my creation?" he pondered. It is lifted by two cotton balls and it hovers above the ground. "I shall name this invention a Ballhover" He had also added a new element (a Phlogiston-Catcher) to ensure that none of the created phlogiston would be missed. After having parked the ballhover, Alberto returned to his basement laboratory to complete his letter to the Royal Society. Alberto would debate with the monkey later to find ideas how to make a ballhover dirigible. C&C welcome. (and the pictures are much larger on flickr) Builder's comments: As for the photography, the reflections on these hemispheres are terrible... And the whole thing is utterly fragile and broke down and crashed several times .... (for those who want to try for themselves). Otherwise this was fun Quote
Tezclatipoca Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Excellent "ballhover" ! Your use of rat liver will help all sailers to earn something by catching those awful rope eaters that enjoy to squat our ships... Great story ! I am curious to see how it will become dirigible. And what will be the monkey's idea to do so... Quote
TitusV Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I knew this was coming, and I love IT! Especially your brander, with the bottle of wine Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted May 1, 2016 Author Posted May 1, 2016 Can some of the friendly supervisors of this section of the forum please correct the title (i.e. replace the "&" with the closing bracket ")")? Would be much appreciated Excellent "ballhover" ! Your use of rat liver will help all sailers to earn something by catching those awful rope eaters that enjoy to squat our ships... Great story ! I am curious to see how it will become dirigible. And what will be the monkey's idea to do so... Thanks! I fear that the monkey would suggest to use the repulsion effect from throwing rats out of the ballhover... I knew this was coming, and I love IT! Especially your brander, with the bottle of wine But you did not expect that kind of "airship", did you? Thanks! Quote
Capt Wolf Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Excellent build! I did not expect your airship to take this shape. As to your construct's fragility, that sounds a bit like the real thing! BTW, love the rats hanging by their tails in the lab. There's so much detail to enjoy in the lab! Quote

Elostirion Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Time to add a new ship-class, right? I guess this might be a 2S (for sky)? Absolutely lovely and a great niche to build in BoBS. Please just keep it up. Quote
Kai NRG Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Cat needed for balance. Very nice; really like the two globes. Quote
Sir Stig Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 OOC: I love all those trinkets hinting to areas of science in his laboratory. Some Medicine/Philosophy (skull), Alchemy/Metallurgy (gold crystal) , Nature (frog), vials, potions and so on. The lamps (if they are lamps and not glasses with formaldehyde) on the wall are effective. I wish the cabinet was at least a little bit taller, if only to fit a few small drawers underneath the books. IC: Your endeavors in getting things to lift of the ground are amusing, although I see no practical use for it. It surely can not lift ships that are too large to carry, I presume. Could this invention of yours be used for harvesting very tall trees? As it gains weight she comes back down again, if I understand your concept? Or to put it in Eslandolan terms: Could we save spendings on banana salaries to the current workers? Colonel Oystridge Major of Bardo Quote
Franco Clarke Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 What an excellent creation, I'm sure the other nations will keenly await for perhaps more practical versions of the ballhover! Quote

Colonel Oystridge Major of Bardo Dear Colonel Oystridge, the practical usage of my findings has yet to be determined. Science is a means of gaining insight into the world we live in - in the first place. But rest assured, I already have some ideas... Friendly Regards Alberto, Mayor of Pontelli And the lamps are lamps, correct, and as you have well observed the rest of the laboratory is filled with different stuff Alberto is interested in. What an excellent creation, I'm sure the other nations will keenly await for perhaps more practical versions of the ballhover! We'll see Quote
Jacob Nion Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I can imagine how everyone complains if the first sea rat air balloon will be launched :) Lovely work as always captain! Quote
Bregir Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 It seems to me that the artist's rendition underestimates the size of those ballons, unless of course phlogiston has much more carrying power than I ever thought possible! It is amazing how swiftly your findings are developing, and spreading, and some day flying might perhaps not be limited to the select few! ;) Quote
Garmadon Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Hilarious build and story (as usual!) Captain B, great job with the ball-hoverer, and, like Kai, I was cracked up by your saying that the cat was needed for balance! (Not that I doubt it, it's just hilarious anyways!) De Chauncourtois is convinced that this new invention will not tend to improve Alberto's survival probabilities though Quote

Fuzzy MacFuzz Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 (edited) To Alberto De Pontelli Dated this 4th day of May in the 616th year After Empire Sir, I am delighted to hear of your latest application of Phlogiston to flight. I trust that no cats were hurt in the making of this production? You may have heard that Thaddeus Lupus has recently carried out similar experiments and has conducted a manned flight, sadly ending in the sea but thankfully without casualties. Thanks to the generous support of Lady Norrington, Mr Janszen and myself have been continuing our own experiments on the beach here at Port Raleigh. We believe that Major Howard may have devised a most ingenious solution to the problem of steering the ballhover, which we are now trialling. In fact we rather prefer the term 'Phlogisphere' suggested by Thaddeus Lupus. I look forward to hearing more developments on this fascinating project as your experiments continue, and I will keep you informed of my own work. Your servant, in affectionate friendship, Mr Hawksbrugh Edited May 4, 2016 by Fuzzy MacFuzz Quote

Your servant, in affectionate friendship, Mr Hawksbrugh To Mr. Hawksbrugh Dated this 4th day of May in the 616th year After Empire (the post boat has been delivering quite fast) My Dear Friend, I can assure that no cats (and no monkeys) were hurt during my experiments. What you tell me about Mr. Lupus is fascinating news indeed. I am surprised to hear that their machinery was able to reach the sea. So far, my Ballhover has just been hovering (until all of the Oleon wine had been burnt. Then the Ballhover landed.) Why would somebody call this a "Phlogisphere"? 'tis such a modern word. Prithee, may I urge you to kindly go through the extra trouble of adhering to the term "Ballhover"? Ballhover or not ballhover, that is the question. 'tis not nobler in the mind to drag a different term into existence. In any case - good luck for your work! Best wishes and warm regards to Lady Norrington and Mr. Janszen Alberto da Pontelli Quote
