I think the problem is that the official sets are so good and so detailed, it requires a lot more efforts and creativity to create something similar, yet different. Adding in all the play features, it gets even harder. Let's face it, most kid's creation sucks, but before it was comparable less sucky than official models (which also sucked), but now they just look ridiculous which might discourage kids from even trying. I don't think it bothers younger kids, but older kids are starting to play them as models rather than building sets.

There also seems to be move away from alternative models. One can argue that encourages creativity, but it certainly makes it harder.

It's also a lot harder to reach a point where you can build any sets.

When I was a kid in the 80's official sets were a lot simpler. There were only six "building" colours (red, blue, yellow, black, white, (light) grey) and the standard 1xN brick was used a lot more in sets. I don't think that the so-called "specialized part" is the problem, but rather the fact that there are so much more pieces that one would call standard now (like curved slopes). The plethora of colours amplifies this problem because the chance to have the right piece in the right colour is much smaller.

I have encountered this problem. I purchased what I considered a large collection on ebay. It was older bricks. (I was hoping to construct the Robot Command Center.) I quickly found a large number of pieces and colors I didn't have.

Coming back to Lego there certainly seems to be more parts and options than there was in the the 80's, surely giving more options and more creativity.

One part I don't like are the new large pieces, like the front of the Lego space shuttle, which seem too easy and just looks like a bit of a toy with Lego added on the back

I have noticed more people building just to display, I think that's become more active (since star wars?)

but this is nothing new, Lego has been doing that since the 80's. It's even possibly less nowadays.
