There are certain Star Wars sets that everyone seems to realize are great. The UCS Slave 1 instantly comes to mind, but there are others. There are plenty of great standout sets that we all love, but are there any sets you love that never seem to get the spotlight? I always wonder what great sets I am missing out on due to obscurity, and I'd love to hear some input from the community. What do you think? any hidden gems?

My own input is the original ARC-170 starfighter (7259). It's not a perfect set, and I'm guessing its relative flimsiness is what keeps it out of the spotlight (at least I never seem to hear about it), but this set is one of my favorites. The Technic engineering makes for an awesome build and some of the most entertaining play features of any set I own, and I've always loved the look of it.

Any others? What lesser-mentioned sets are worth another look?

A few goodies:

P-38 "Magna Guard Starfighter" - An obscure Episode 3 ship we got as a model thanks to The Clone Wars. It feels decent to swoosh around, and it's similarity to the US Army Air Corp's "Lighting (1)" aircraft from WWII helps sell the model to me.

Original AT-AT: Other than the fragile neck connection this is a near perfect rendition of the AT-AT... from the yellow faced licenced minifigure era none the less! Oh and it's old gray bricks help it look more battle hardened than the newer Star Wars sets do.

The First Empire Battle Pack (2008): the silly blue dropship ain't canon, but is fun and represents a rarely seen Lego "original design" in the Star Wars theme. The inclusion of three regular stories and one shadow trooper was icing on the cake.

The Republic Fighter Tank is great all around, packed with lots of unexpected features and details for its price. In 2008 there also was the somewhat hated Twilight, which could've had a lot more space and detail on the interior, but it's a great representation of the exterior, the cockpit is great and it kinda has the front boarding ramp too. There's also the Bounty Hunter Gunship, 2010 General Grievous Fighter, UCS Obi-Wan Jedi Starfighter, 2012 X- and Y-wing and the HH-87 Starhopper. Bigger and not-so-underrated sets that are pure awesomness are Republic Frigate, 2013 Republic Gunship and 2014 ISD.

^I'll agree with the Republic Frigate. I had the sheer luck of getting a complete one (minus the stickers) this summer for less than half price. Though I think my favorite thing about it is commander wolf- probably one of my favorite minifigures I own!

I also liked the Ghost. I think a lot of people wanted it to be bigger. But since it was based on Rebels, I understand why they tried to keep the price point relatively low. I think it achieved a good balance of playability, aesthetics, and interior space for its size. You kind of have to pretend that the escape pods double as crew quarters, though.

The UCS slave 1 and original Arc 170 are both in my top 10 favorite sets.

I think the 7264 imperial inspection ship is fantastic and doesn't get enough credit. The build was very good for it's time, and it included 10 minifigures with the ship, for just 50 bucks!

75017 Duel on Geonosis: It's one of my favourite playsets, with lots of useful parts (link) and an interesting build. It also includes a decent range of minifigures; a correct (non-CW) Yoda, Count Dooku & Poggle The Lesser. I'm not sure why it didn't sell well - I managed to buy 3 of them at 75% off!

The arc is quite underrated. I have a LOT of Star Wars sets and speaking from experience of having so many, the older ones are the true underrated ones. Things such as Jango Fetts Slave 1 (7153) or the original AT-TE (4482, one of my favorites). Especially the 2005 wave was way underrated, they did an excellent job, along with the non "cartoony" feel the clone wars sets boast about.

The UCS Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter is quite underrated in my opinion. Although the set can be more detailed, I think that it represent the real ship quite well and the set also comes with some awesome parts (The dark red 4x4 dome with R4-P17 printing as a example).

Ok, how about the original EP. III, Anikans starfighter? Man that was my favorite set as a kid. A great example of making a model work when you think how fewer parts the had. I think the fact it came with a Vulture Droid is amazing, which you don't see now days. You'd have to spend $40 dollars to get both! I liked the 2011 Sith Infiltrator a lot too, before I took it apart.

I dont think jangos slave one is underated. Its one of the best sets out there and is known as one, explains thw $250 price for one new.

mine is probably the '09 7676 Gunship. I know the newer one's better but c'mon. It totally beat (most of) the other 2009 sets and it had awesome figs

I'm totally with you on that one. Obi-Wan's starfighter is among my favorite ships from the prequels (there are a lot to choose from) and that was a set always at the top of my wish list along with the UCS At-ST.

Prequel ships in general. Everyone knocks the movies but two wasn't horrible and three was pretty good and the prequel ships are cooler than almost every ot ship. My favorite is probably the Republic tank (yes I know it's technically as much a prequel tank as it is an ot set).

I have to mention the 75091: Flash Speeder from last year.

They caught the smooth curves very well & the color scheme of the seat section is phenomenal. You won't find many non moc sets with so little exposed studs. Besides to the back & the missiles the set reminds me of an UCS version, but it doesn't look absurd to put in minifigures.

Other than that I feel like Carbon-Freezing Chamber & Mos Eisley Cantina are great designs as well. People ranted cause of the size problem - easy solved: Just buy 2-3 of them & other people can still enjoy "half the set" for less money. Just 2 bad about the missing characters..

I purchased the Z-95 Headhunter for just 20 $ - would have never bought it otherwise. Didn't like the design & didn't had sympathy to the CW. But after building it, the ship became my favourite set until today. Very smooth & flat, great colour scheme. The bombing function doesn't influence the design. & for 501 fans (or thoose of the Umbara episodes of CW) the figures are a must have.

Assault on Hoth UCS  Mwahahaha

I kid. No I think the original turbo tank may be underrated. It was big and bulky and although isn't perfect is the best version of the tank i've seen (including the upcoming one). The light up Mace Windu was god awful but the clones and original Kashhyk Scout trooper was epic!

That one!

While the original CTT may be extremely unstable (the model falls apart every time I transport it) the interior stays the best until today. In the middle section you have the biggest platform that we ever got in a vehicle to put your army. Currently I have stationed 18 stormtroopers & a cannon in it. Plus operators in different spots. The CW version gave that space away for features & the current model just fits 3 minifigures  . Everything else is structure & features.

In some cases I really miss the old big unstable models with low price tags & much space.

While I think there are definitely times when a good function or look can trump interior space, I agree that many old sets were great for the reason you mentioned. When it comes to large vehicles like the clone turbo tank or capitol ships like star destroyers, a lot of the older versions are really exciting because you can open them up and fit lots of things in them. It makes minifigures a lot more worthwhile an inclusion, and doesn't relegate their role solely to a collectible that makes an otherwise lackluster set worth buying. Modern ships like the Ghost for instance are nice, but would have been vastly improved were costs upped a bit and play features toned down in order to provide some interior. Of course I know Lego has to think about their market- I don't fault them (especially since a lot of times the features they include are in fact great) but I do have a soft spot for a big set with a big interior.

I agree, the original CTT is one of my favorite sets. I loved playing with it, and I was one of the lucky ones to get a non-lightup Mace Windu in it. And yes, I love the original ARC-170 as well.

But let me really throw you back: the Final Duel stes from ROTJ, the small little ones, you remember those? I may be biased since those were my first Star Wars sets. There may not be much there, but they were great army packs.
