Does this model have crab steering? I can't really tell from the instruction. Based on the instruction it looks like there isn't, but in the previous page there's a photo of this model with crab steering.

Actually it does!

In the instructions, it's step 51 and 52 where the magic happens.

The idea is that the knobs on the roof of the cabin operate the steering (8460 style), but here the left and right knob are independent. One knob operates the steering of axle 1, and the other operates the steering of axle 5. Then, these inputs are the interpolated via a long beam running under the whole chassis.

(yes I know the arrows are off)

I see all links in the opening post are outdated (I changed my site between 2016 and now, and apparently something went wrong with the automatic forwarding). Here's a link to the new page, that also hosts the instructions.

So how does the model switch from opposite steering to crab steering? I still don't quite get it.

There are two knobs on the cabin, which operate the steering. When you use knob 1, it controls the steering of axle 1. When you use knob 2, it controls the steering of axle 2.

All five axles are connected via the black bar shown in the second picture.

So, four steering modes are possible:

  1. When you use ONLY knob 1, it steers axle 1, but (due to the long black beam connecting all the axles) also axle 2, and axle 3 to some extent.

  2. When you use ONLY knob 2, it steers axle 5, but (due to the long black beam connecting all the axles) also axle 4, and axle 3 to some extent.

  3. When you use BOTH knob 1 AND knob 2, you get the opposite steering.

  4. When you use BOTH knob 1 AND knob 2 (but in the opposite direction from case 3), you get crab steering.

Maybe yet another description will be helpful:

Knob 1 controls axle 1.

Knob 2 controls axle 5.

And the long black beam connects alle the axles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), so that the axles 2, 3, 4 will align just in the "right" angle in the different sterring modes.

E.g., Crab steering is achieved by steering axle 1 and axle 5 (by knob and and knob 2, respectively) in the same direction - and thanks to the connection by the long black beam, axle 2, 3, 4 will steer in the same direction with the very same angle.
