Brickdoctor Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 I don't really understand what your point is here, I think you might be a little blinded by nostalgia. Like with everything else, they want to make them better and better and they are doing just that. The original Qui-Gon and Darth Maul were great but they are dated by modern LEGO standards. The more recent figs are better in every conceivable way. Nostalgia is a factor, but I know and agree with what jamesn is saying: the older minifigs have a more "LEGO-ish" stylization to them that makes them fit in better with the abstract proportions of minifigs. A good example is Boba Fett: I get that the modern helmet is more flexible (literally and figuratively), but the old mold has a certain blockish charm. It's not necessarily a lack of quality, it's just...different.I agree that minifigs are a large part of what sells sets, and I agree that TLG should continue to push the limits of minifigs, but there are some designs that don't need to be made more realistic. Pulp Detective Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 I'm a minifigure addict,so the more detailed minifigures the better I say. Quote
HawkLord Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 I prefer and keep both types of minifigures - blockish and detailed. I don't "upgrade" my figures by any means. With that said, I do understand that Lego seems to believe that updates to minifigures are mandatory, so I almost expect something new in every incarnation. Quote
Robianco Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 I think it helps that Fett is a beloved character so having the first incarnation of that character will hold a lot of meaning and good will to people. Same if there has only been one release of a particular figure it's rarity will help the desirability even if it is less detailed than more recent figures. Quote
jimmynick Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 (edited) I don't really understand what your point is here, I think you might be a little blinded by nostalgia. Absolutely, I'm nostalgic. To be sure, there are plenty of old minifigures that weren't at all accurate or have been helped enormously by redesign. I'm very grateful for the most recent iteration of Luke's hair because the previous versions didn't work at all, and I really liked the introduction of flesh-colored figs. The original phase 1 clone trooper helmets weren't great. The original Jabba and Gamorreans are awful because they are just plain sand green. The first General Grievous was nice at the time but really doesn't stand up over time. Face prints on Ewoks are a great improvement. On the other hand, just because a fig is old doesn't mean it's dated. Stormtroopers, Vader; as others have said, Boba Fett. The print on Han from the original Sail Barge (I suppose it's 10 years old now, but bear with me) is incredibly simple but really represents Han very well. Perhaps Robianco is right that my opinion is shaped by the first versions of classic characters. On the other hand, I'd love to see a 2-wide version of R2-D2 because the existing figure is so badly out of scale with every other minifigure. Simple and old things aren't necessarily bad; likewise printing ever more detailed figures just because technology has become more precise and capable of supporting more colours isn't necessarily good. This is a very subjective thing, and what I've said is just my opinion. I know other people think different things. I would like to see figures of new characters rather than the most recent iteration of character X from scene Y. From what is said in the 2016 thread, it seems the new Death Star will contain figures of new characters, but I don't really understand other comments that the figures as a whole must need updating because the old Death Star is from 2008. And I totally understand that TLG update and remake figures for the value to collectors. Edited August 22, 2016 by jamesn Quote
Willsy Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Something funny I've noticed: Boba has been in one set ever year for 2015, 2016, and 2017. Considering there are only so many sets you could possibly include him in (due to his limited appearance in the OT), the consecutive years of his appearances in LEGO form is kind of interesting considering he's not really a 'main' character. I wonder if they will give him printed arms in the Desert Skiff. I think the absence of printing on his arms in the Carbon Freezing Chamber is more to do with the size of the set. That was $20, this is $40, so I could see them maybe thrusting the UCS Slave 1 variant in since it's not really a 'cheap' set like the Chamber was. Also, I'm not bothered by another Landspeeder. It will be nice to get an updated Tatooine Luke without cheek bones and the newer version of Ben in a cheaper set, as well as another Tusken. Yoda's Interceptor has me interested, though I hope they use the 2013 version of him and not the CW version. Quote
RetroInferno Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Mini-figs are clearly better nowadays, I played with the first star wars Lego sets as a kid and characters like Vader and Fett have been vastly improved. The old ones have that blocky charm, sure, but ugh that yellow skin tone.... Quote

DarthTwoShedsJackson Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Stop updating minifigs and thereby pandering solely to the extreme end of the collectors community? No! Stop updating minifigs and thereby promoting stagnation? No! By that thinking, Lego could've stuck with where they were 40 or so years ago. No, thanks! That being said, there is a point at which a minifig could have too much detail and look clutterd and diffuse, but this is more a question of design, and less of better detail and improved printing-techniques. Quote
Kim-Kwang-Seok Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I'm sure the overall proportions will stay classic, but it still is interessting: for the Batman movie they'll introduce a belt piece that's not just printed on torso & legs. Next up maybe accessories that you can put on the arms (for armor, guns etc.). At least at some point SW (though not next year I think) will keep up with the extra printing. I wonder how the "3D" pieces could affect SW.. Anyway: I also wonder if the Landspeeder will be of the same design than the last one. I think it would be a huge improvement to "build" the red stripes in - instead of putting them on top of the plates. Quote
Robianco Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 The Batman belt mould is something I don't really see expanding into other licensed themes... I think they wanted a point of difference from regular SH figures hence the face print with the exaggerated expression on Bats from the Lego Move sets. That said, a white version of that could probably work as a MOC for the Stormtrooper belt added to Tatooine Han and Luke. I still think at some point there'll be dual moulding on Legs like Han with side pin stripe but that could be several 'upgrades' later. It'll be interesting when it comes to upgrades to figures such as Bossk which would benefit hugely from dual moulding on leg and arms. With regards to Fett in the 2017 set I can imagine them printing the same design but maybe a different colour for the arm hardware? That keeps the Slave 1 version unique without it being another release of this year's figure. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I think what they are trying to say is that it is irritating for collectors who collect minifigures as it means there will never be an end point if the minifigures keep getting changed yearly. I think it would be good if we eventually reach a final phase of minifigures designs so characters like storm troopers don't become redundant every few years as they are changed. No, at least in my case, I don't mind new versions and I'm not looking for an end point. When I say I prefer the older designs, I mean that I like the simpler, more abstract stylization of earlier designs, not that I want them to stick with the older designs and never change them. Quote

With season 3 both Ezra and Sabine get new looks,so Lego by updating them could also give them their proper skin color. Quote

Hush! There are some very, very, VERY spoiler-sensitive and easily-triggered people around here. You shouldn't blurt out spoilers regarding the upcoming season of REBELS like mentioning Ezra's and Sabine's new haircut and style so non-chalantly! Oh, btw: Darth Vader is Luke's father - can you believe it? Edited August 23, 2016 by DarthTwoShedsJackson Quote

Oh, btw: Darth Vader is Luke's father - can you believe it? Unfortunately neither Ezra or Sabine are mentioned in leaked sets information, so if they will happen it will probably be summer 2017 wave. But I'm excited for blind Kanan minifigure in new Phantom 2.0 set. But this got me thinking why would they include blind Kanan in a ship? I mean he can't see, how will he pilot it? This makes me think that rumored Zeb minifigure is also included in this set, considering its 40-50 $ set, getting only 2 minifigures Thrawn and Kanan + Chopper would be a ripoff to most . Hopefully Zeb is in this set, I mean he can't remain the only exclusive to Ghost from 2014 right? Edited August 23, 2016 by benderisgreat Quote
Pulp Detective Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Hmm maybe it goes like this Kanan,Thrawn, chopper,Zeb or Hera. After all she is the pilot of the group. Quote
Forresto Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) Depends on how crucial Thrawn is to next seasons plot. Hes going to be highly desired by AFoLs just like Tarkin but the question is does Lego know that? If Thrawn ends up being the equivalent of the Joker or Moriarty to the Rebels, then he could very well be the hot figure of the next wave. And hes cool looking to boot. Ninja of Fire Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Do you guys think that the Blind Kanan will have the mask molded into the hair or have it printed on his face? Quote
scoiltreasa Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 I think having it printed is better if they include an alternate face - perhaps the one from the trailer. Quote
