CabooseBM Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 (edited) A friend mentioned this and I think it really holds true, 2015's sets had parts that came together to create a whole, while 2016 just has... Parts. They don't work together to create solid silhouettes or shapes, they just kinda exist in a collection of homogenized designs and greebly chunks, losing a lot of what made the first wave so good. TheGreatSpirit Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 This wave thus far is... interesting. Unlike the 2015 wave, which was universally praised, this wave is really a mixed bag, and I think the reactions to Pohatu are the clearest indicator of this. Half of you guys seem to hate him, half seem to love him (I fit in this category). Credit where credit's due, Lego succeeded in making this wave more than just a rehash of last year; this wave is far different from last years, and unique from it, for better or worse Quote

Mixed as my feelings currently are, I can't deny that it's a techincally impressive wave of sets. I just hope that 2017 manages to marry the best of both its predecessors. MakutaOfWar Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 So far, just thinking about it, my only problems are colors and proportions. Never was a "clashing textures" guy, seeing as I still love G1 aesthetics, but I sure am tired of the use of metallics and trans colors -.- and Gali's and Lewa's legs appear really stubby, and Tahu's feel like the joints are swapped around. As well as their arms. But I do love the increased complexity, and functions galore. Still excited for em' though. My first buy's will probably be Tahu, Ikir, and Umarak. Then probably Kopaka, Onua, and Terak. After which Lewa and Uxar, than might hold off on Gali and Pohatu, at least right now. Looks like I gotta get rid of some figures for shelf space ;_; *sigh*. Now, I'm feeling a little pumped for summer(mainly because it is freaking cold and makes my skin hurt and dry), but also because Umarak the Destroyer sounds super promising. I mean come on, he's the Destroyer! Like a figure has to live up to a name like that(this sounds sarcastic but I'm actually being serious). Quote
Onepu the Protector Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I do agree the mask is maybe too feminine, especially for a guy like Pohatu. What exactly makes this mask feminine? ._. Quote
GK733 Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 What exactly makes this mask feminine? ._. It's something with the eyeslits. Quote

Aethersprite Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I think it's the more circular shape of the eyeslits that give that impression. For me, rather than make him look feminine, Pohatu's eyeslits actually remind me of his Nuva mask, which is great. Quote
Onepu the Protector Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 (edited) I think it's the more circular shape of the eyeslits that give that impression. Neither of these features are inherently feminine (or masculine, for that matter). Edited December 19, 2015 by Onepu the Protector Quote
Logan McOwen Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Can we not have another gender debate please? There's enough of that on the internet as it is. Quote
wghost Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Pointing out an invalid comment on a set feature belongs to the daily life of the thread imo. Quote

Shakar Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I'll cut it off- Feminine might probably be not the best way to describe it, but Pohatu's new mask definitely looks less aggressive than the 2015 version. It actually looks closer to the 2001 Kakama to me. I do like his dark tan. It's a good addition to a colour scheme that felt too bland to me (too much silver and lack of a non transparent contrasting colour for dark orange). But there's still too much silver, his lower arms should be dark tan and his shins should be dark orange. Quote

[gif snip] No sheet Sherlock, the point is we're talking about freaking robots. Their appearance "showing" their gender shouldn't be a problem. Female hyenas have gigantic clitoris (omg lewd stuff), but they're still females. We shouldn't apply our standards to things unrelated to us (if G2 BIONICLE are robots built by humans you have a point, but until the day it will be revelaed you don't). Quote
santaends Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 So far other than Umarak, which uniter has the most complex build? Quote

I'd say Tahu, Kopaka and Onua (since they're 20$ sets, like Umarak). Tahu, Gali, and Onua all only have custom shoulders. Pohatu and Kopaka have custom shoulders and biceps. Lewa has custom shoulders, biceps, and shins. Take that what you will. To me, though, all the Toa have about the same level of complexity to their shoulders, and Pohatu's/Lewa's custom limb parts are pretty simple. I feel Kopaka is the most complex with his shoulders that actually do quite a lot. And, yeah, it's been mentioned a handful of times now that Kopaka is closer to a $15 set this year (as evidenced by the set being $25 with the $10 Creature, not $30). Quote

Thank you both.. good analysis for a newbie like me. So glad to learn from you all. I've only started with it last week with this year's Lewa, protector or jungle and protector of stone. Somehow it's like buying system sets for me.. I only go for colours I enjoy.. but they all look so good.. Edited December 21, 2015 by santaends Quote

Ryder Windham confirmed that the G2 BIONICLE characters are biomechanical. Meaning that they're both biological while having mechanical components. This was also confirmed in the animations upon finding out that the title of Protector was passed down from father to son. Reproduction confirmed right there. Then there's the fact that the Protectors we see laying Ekimu to rest have all died and the ones that call the Toa are their descendants, to further solidify reproduction and the biomechanical nature of the inhabitants of Okoto. "Robots" is the incorrect terminology for beings that are both mechanical yet made up of biological tissues and capable of various biological functions Edited December 21, 2015 by Tarvaxx Quote

That alone justifies giving them human-like traits even if they're not biologically necessary. What makes sense in-universe is secondary to what fans and buyers think of their appearance. Quote
EdWebhead Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 (edited) For those of you in Ontario, Canada, check you local Toys R Us, I found the entire wave there! I picked up Kopaka and Melum for now, and I have to say I am in love with them! I'm really digging the more Technic-based builds this year. It makes each to a a bit more unique, and it just feels more like Bionicle to me. I loved the sets last year, but this year feels closer to the older series we grew up loving, IMO. "Robots" is the incorrect terminology for beings that are both mechanical yet made up of biological tissues and capable of various biological functions I knew about the whole biomechanical stuff, I've read Windham's comment on that german forum. As much as you knew I used the word "robot" for easier understanding. Still, that doesn't justify at all any whining about Pohatu's mask: it's ok to give fictional characters human qualities, it's not ok to complain if such qualities don't match human genders. They're not supposed to be walking stereotypes, Gali can be """masculine""" as much as Pohatu can be """feminine""". Don't make me do that kind of talking, pretty please with sugar on top.
