June 13, 20168 yr Author That's an awesome job going on there! rebuilt, not rebuilded - irregular verbs, I will never forget you thanks to my English teacher. ;) Edited June 13, 20168 yr by madsen1997
June 16, 20168 yr Author I got the rear axle mounted. with single mounted wheels and a new suspension. Wheelbase also matching the real U4000, but it is a bit longer than the real one. Will try making the gearbox more compact so I'll get a more precise scala. so the drivetrain is still 4x4, and with a matching gearing in both the front and rear. but only with differential at the rear. (Efferman's mini differential would fit great in my front axle), but I will try finding a way to use a stock differeantial into the front axle. suspension works great in both the rear and front, and the chassis does only bend a little. As you can see, I had a lack in U-joints/CV-joints, so I had to let the drivetrain through some bevelgears, so the suspension would be working. Also the front axle has a good suspension travel so far, but at this moment the steering will be working minimal when the shock are fully compresed .... Edited June 16, 20168 yr by madsen1997
July 4, 20168 yr This is absolutely awesome!! Unimogs have to be my all-time favourite vehicle and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to see it done such justice. Can't wait to see it finished - love the detail and the way you got the 4x4 transmission to work is genius - well done!!
July 4, 20168 yr Author Hi! Here's a little update :... I've been sorting some old sets, so I've been away for some time... trying to fit a decent U4000 cabin, bumber and hood/bonnet... Hood will be openable, but you will only be able to see 1 of the 4 cylinders. The grill is built like on the Arocs and my Zetros, Been trying to build a U4000 bumber, but I'm not sure about it yet. side view. The fenders, doors and the rear wall will be rebuild, because at this moment the doors will have to be 6 studs long, and I want it to be 7 studs long instead. My front axle with FWD will also need a rebuild, because it does bend a lot because of the weight. .... so the build is going forward, when the cabin, bumber and so on is done, I will try to fit a crane/crabber behind the cabin, and a small winch thing in front.... winch will be without the string so far.... a 2 axle trailer will possible be fitted on the back, maybe with dumber bed. update will follow this weekend
July 4, 20168 yr Nice update, for me the cab looks really good, the hood maybe should have a little bit more inclination, but it is understandable for the scale of it; about the bumper, the design is perfect, you only need to put it one stud forward, you can see it in this pic: http://st.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/5/2013/03/Mercedes-Benz-Unimog-U4000-side-profile.jpg , and about the front axle, you should put reinforcements above the black parts on the sides, and maybe turn the wheels facing inside, so the bending effect is less, however, the overall look of it is amazing, is incredible how much details and functions you have achieved in a model of this scale.
July 4, 20168 yr Nice updates indeed and good progress I would say! Having a powered front axle and a compact designs seems almost impossible... :-)

Thank you ... yeah,, I can see what you mean... the hood will need some final work... and yep, it feels like the bumber is hidding under the grill, so I will try moving it 1 stud forward (shouldn't be hard ) Nice updates indeed and good progress I would say! Having a powered front axle and a compact designs seems almost impossible... :-) Yep, the front axle is the hardest part,, also I only have 3 U joint and 1 CV joint..
July 14, 20168 yr Author A little update. I moved the bumber 1 stud forward, and yes. it looks better than the bumber hidding under the grill. Here's a picuture for the scle between the Arocs and Unimog. also I began to rebuild the front axle, so it wont bend as much as it does now. started to add a trailer too, but I might change it to a 2 axle cart instead of this one with turnable + frontaxle.
July 14, 20168 yr It looks good, the bumper fix really helped, i also like the idea of the trailer and the crane, they looks really nice.
July 19, 20168 yr looks really cool, I think the wheels are to small for the size at the moment( I know you are trying to build it all out of the 42043 set, just saying...and keeping my mind at work for my own version) other than that it looks very good, the trailer looks appealing. Are you overthinking the idea for a tipper bed..?

July 21, 20168 yr I really like what you've done with a limited selection of parts. To make the 2 1x4 technic half beams on the sides of the grille look smother, you could use the two 1x4 tiles from each license plate if you wanted. Just an idea. I know most purists will hate me now, but when I used the 5.5L axle with the stop for the same purpose as you are (for the axles) I used wire cutters to snap off the ends. I have never thought about the solution with those white 1x4 tiles, it might fit pretty well.. I like your idea with those 5.5L axles... Sometime I could really use some 3-4 L axle with same stop.

August 10, 20168 yr Author Hi! .... Haven't posted recently, but I been making some progress. Frontaxle rebuilt Rear axle rebuilt Flatbed/dumperbed will be added to the U4000 itself and the crane + outriggers gonna be mounted on the trailer. added a 3th. axle to the trailer. sorry about the low quality pics. will post some better ones this weekend.
August 10, 20168 yr That trailer looks very interesting, it was worth wait some time because looking at all the progress you have made, it is a well spent time.

Yes indeed U4000 looks nice...but did you try to install front differential - you'll get same with if you put it in 5 x 7 frame...my version of U423 is on the way, just waiting for missing tires - 68.8 x 24 to fit portal axels (partially) inside wheel. Do you plan to make wnything more on Unimog itself?
August 11, 20168 yr Very nice model, and only done with the parts from 42043. Don't like the tires though
August 11, 20168 yr Author Tires is not my favourite either... got a 5x7 frame in spare, so i will try making a front axle with diff. The suspension on the trailer is working really good, and those 3x5 H beams is great for suchs axles.

I like wheel/tire combo from Arocs becsuse it is realistic, but using 32004a or 32004b wheel I managed to make portal axle with reduction using 8z and 16z gears. resulting steared, driven and suspended axle with 18 studs width and Unimog (at least u216 to u530 that I saw) had bigger wheels than ordinary truck like Actros or Daf xf... I assume that U4023 and 5023 also use even bigger wheels. keep with good work and remember LEGO is like classic musik you can not do it with force, you have to concentrate and to have peace and relatively quiet working atmosphere. When I receive missing tires I'll post some of my solutions in your topic if you allow me
