It's a nice set, but hard for me to justify a £50 outlay when the K'nex Yellow Submarine was widely available for £10 so recently.

The difference is the quality of LEGO compared to K'nex, though.

It's entirely different building platform. You can't just use LEGO and mix it altogether and claim as it is.  You can perceive as 'same same' but in actual reality, it's very different. It's not a very fair comparison.

OH DEAR GOD, THAT BOX IS BEAUTIFUL!

Seriously. This will be mine. Everything about it looks wonderful.

Agreed, this will be mine!  I might have to get 2, it's so nice!

Yellow Submarine IS my childhood movie. I remember watching this movie over and over again. My family are huge Beatles fans so I might just have to get two, one for myself and one for my parents.

I doubt they will make more sets, and if they never do I will be entirely satisfied with what we got, but I hope we get one more. I would love to get a Blue Meanie and Old Fred mini figure. I don't know about you guys but i'm smelling a possible Dimensions world?

I doubt there will be more, but I love the idea of Dimensions.  I would really enjoy that.

K'Nex has absolutely no appeal to me (and most people here), there is no comparison.  This is an easy buy for me.

Which "weird parts that look a bit like Duplo" are you talking about? Because the way I see it it's mostly pretty basic slope, curved slope, and dome pieces. The same sorts of parts you might find in an Elves, Star Wars or Ninjago set.

Anyway, I'm not as nostalgic for the Beatles as many people, but this is a great set with a charming design and some fantastic building techniques to achieve its quirky shape!

I guess when I look in detail it's not so like Duplo anymore. I'm just saying that this set is not made with the most traditional building technics you would immediatly think of.

I am sure, christmas has absolutely nothing to do with that

Maybe, though it seems to me Adventure Time would do equally well.

I wonder whether there might be an anniversary figuring into it. The movie Yellow Submarine came out in 1968, but the song that inspired it debuted in 1966, making it fifty years old this year.

I don't think that even came out in the USA. If it did the price point isn't shocking. LEGO is hugely overcharging fans again because LEGO fan are arrogant and don't care they get ripped off.

Interesting comment from someone on a forum for Adult Fans of Lego.

This looks like an amazing set for anyone who has seen the Yellow Submarine film but not for anyone just interested in the Beatles themselves.

I'd probably say that anyone that was interested in the Beatles would know about Yellow Submarine anyway regardless of whether they've seen it. These images are also the cover of a very successful album.

The Beatles are iconic enough that they could have a set of figures from each era whether that be in their suits, tan jackets and sheriff badges from Shea, Sgt Peppers or Abbey Road. I just don't see the platform for those to appear unlike Yellow Submarine.

I half-agree but I do think it's possible there could be Beatles fans who don't like the Yellow Submarine film.

There could indeed be, but this set isn't for them. The project that Kevin Szeto created and that 9,999 other people voted for was for the Yellow Submarine from Yellow Submarine, and not the Cavern Club, Magical Mystery Tour bus, Shea Stadium, Abbey Road, the set of The Ed Sullivan Show, or any other vehicle or location associated with the group, and the Yellow Submarine was what the LEGO Ideas team approved. Of course any included minifigures would naturally be chosen to best go with the set's main model, rather than alternate versions - just as, say, the Doctor Who set that includes Clara Oswald also includes the Eleventh and Twelfth incarnations of the Doctor and not, say, the Fourth and Fifth. It's why all LEGO's police cars come with police instead of being driven by bakers and surfers, all their X-Wing Fighters come with Luke Skywalker and/or some other Rebel pilot(s) rather than Jawas, Sandpeople, and Indiana Jones, and their pirate ships tend to come with pirates rather than astronauts.

Now, if the set had come with other versions of the lads from Liverpool in addition to their Yellow Submarine versions, that would be a cool bonus, but there's no reason to go with the early suits or the tan ones from Shea Stadium or whatever instead of their animated garb from this movie.

I can understand that... though FWIW, this set simply has well over twice as many pieces as the K'Nex one, in addition to being much more accurate-looking (though in fairness, the K'Nex one appears to have more play features as well as more figures).

I think I might try and source those Knex Blue Meanies as they might look quite good alongside this. I must admit looking at that Knex set should give you enough of an idea why it was priced much lower than Lego.

I guess I'm the odd one out here. I don't think I recall ever not liking a lego set, but this one honestly makes me recoil a bit. I can't wrap my mind around what kid would want this, though I'm sure some exist, but then again, its obvious from this thread theres an adult market!  I guess its just very obviously not marketed for kids, moreso than I'm used to seeing, and I feel weird about that.

I'm not a beatles fan, and it seems like I'm alone there. Oh well, more for you guys!

Just for the record: do you go into every thread that's dedicated to themes and sets that you have no interest in, just to let everyone know that you have no interest in them? Doesn't seem like the most valuable contribution to a conversation, but to each their own, I guess.

Back on topic: I hope that Lego has a generous first run of these and doesn't get too fussy about order limits, because I can think of two people off the top of my head who are going to need them for Christmas. One of them is my 67-year old mother-in-law, who I'm pretty sure has never built a Lego set in her life!

to be fair, everyone fussing over how awesome a set is for 8 pages with no other opinions is hardly a conversation either.  Either way I don't appreciate you telling me I'm not allowed to an opinion, If you don't like my posts please block me thank you.

As a beatles fan who has never seen the movie, I can assure you that I'm extremely interested. Those heads

Most Ideas sets are aimed at a 10+ audience  (an older audience than most play themes), and this one is no exception. Though, I can see why at least some kids might enjoy this. I never watched the movie Yellow Submarine as a kid (at least, as far as I can remember), but I had Beatles cassettes courtesy of my parents, and I loved the sillier songs like "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus's Garden". Obviously I'm many years older than today's kids, but I think there are probably still plenty of kids and teens who are familiar with the song Yellow Submarine, if not the movie.

Watched the movie so now I have a little better "concept"

Those Blue Meanies were actually creepy, the faces, the up close shots, yeesh. Glad they didn't include any.

I am glad they included Jeremy though! I also get all the little extra bits that each Beatle has. I want this set even more now!

My kids want this set.

I'm 44. My kids are 8 and 4. Obviously it was my parents that got me interested in the Beatles and I've passed it onto them. My kids even love singing Octopus' Garden at the end of the Coast Cruise at LEGOLAND (and know where it comes from).

I haven't seen the movie since I was a kid, so we're all gearing up to watch it when we get the set.

On S@H, (not available yet though - of course) Australian price is $79.99.

That's a pleasant surprise considering the US price, I was expecting something like $100.

Surely this is an adult-oriented set, as well there is an adult market, and several adult-targeted sets before and not only from ideas. All the 80s movie sets that are not star wars, for example

As for the Yellow Submarine set: i find the look of both minfigs and the boat Itself very appropriate, even if yellow skin would be more appealing to me, its clear TLG wont break their licened-skin-tone policy. The price is a bit on the steep side though, but actually just where comparable sets are located too.

I don't plan to get it for myself, but I expect it to be a significant seller at christmas, that will attract a lot of interest from outside the Lego community. News sites are reporting on it, and the nostalgica factor if someone happens to be a beatles-fan and has fond memories of playing with Lego as a kid, is surely irresistible for many.
