I enjoyed the Technic 8000 series Universal Building Sets a lot, but I wonder if LEGO makes anything similar to this line of sets in question that were sold here (in the USA) from 1984-1995?

Among the sets that enticed me:

8820 Mountain Rambler *

(* these sets could be combined together to make a huge race car)

Even the BASIC 700 series had a few Technic elements included:

TLG is still making Technic DACTA sets which are somewhat like the old Universal sets

I have a lot of those old sets as they're cheap, good for parts and often displays interresting ideas not found in normal Technic sets

8040 was my first pnematic experience back in 1984, I thought it was very advanced and I made a lot of wierd contraptions

Kinda miss sets like that (722/33/44 are my desert island LEGO sets), they really kicked your imagination into high gear

I was raised with 733, it was not a Technic set but as you said it kicks the imagination. I'm sure it was that set which made me a mechanical engineer and now I'm an exclusive LEGO Technic fan with about 200 sets.
