Bbafett Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Maybe it's just me but I can't look at these pictures and see the whole build of the wings so I know what I don't have. Does someone have a more in depth guide on doing this mod? I would love to do this but am only getting parts of it and not the whole thing. Quote
Flandy Posted September 6, 2016 Author Posted September 6, 2016 What pics would you like? Not getting on with LDD, I just do this the old skool way with a few trays of lego in front of me on the dining table, and whilst the trial and error method seems to yield results, it's less helpful when you want to show others what you've done. I keep tweaking this and I'm planning on redesigning the engines for greater accuracy and strength. My ultimate goal is to have as accurate an x-wing as possible, whilst keeping the end result as playable as possible. My Nephews are my test bed on this, and so far it's the lower wing that's the weakest link. Recently i changed the lasers and the patterning on the wings to eliminate the stickers. Quote
makoy Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Wow. Just saw this topic just now. I am ready to do this mod the moment I open my X-Wing. :) Quote
Bbafett Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 (edited) The interior of the wings around the engine parts(top and bottom) is where I am struggling to see what parts you used. Also, on the top half of the wings, any chance you could take that wing off and let me know what all parts you used on that and how long it is to connect to the engine part? Looks like a 12 x 3 wedge plate alongside a 2 x 12 plate but can't see enough on it. Thanks. Edited September 6, 2016 by Bbafett Quote
Flandy Posted September 6, 2016 Author Posted September 6, 2016 The interior of the wings around the engine parts(top and bottom) is where I am struggling to see what parts you used. Ah ok, the remodelling of the engines to hide the gubbins for the rubber bands. I'll do a strip down of an upper and a lower engine to try and show what's in those. Also, on the top half of the wings, any chance you could take that wing off and let me know what all parts you used on that and how long it is to connect to the engine part? You're right about the 12x3 wedge, but the plate is a 14x2, although I rebuilt the rear wings last week so that the 14x2 is replaced by a nuber of 1 stud wide plates in order to make the front edge of the wing more orange, or blue, as the real thing is. brobert Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 This mod is pretty effin awesome. Although my biggest problem with these sets is still the engine part that separates, as it should be circle shaped, and this is oval. That, and the end of the cannons, if you can fix those, it's a pretty much perfect model. great job! Quote
Flandy Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 Ok, step by step pics of how to build the top and bottom engines, and some pics of the wings showing the layers of their make up. Starting with the upper wing: There's not much to it, I didn't strip the laser down as i forgot, so you'll have to figure it out! Now the upper engine: It's a case of clipping the wing to the underside then, not worthy of a pic Next up the lower wing. There's detail of the technicy bit on the first page, so i didn't photo that, but the rest of it showing the layers is here: And the lower engine: And all together: So yeah, that's how it's made at this point, but as mentioned before I'd like to further improve it, and I'm open to suggestion! PickleManDan Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 Thanks for instructions. Can't wait to build this! Quote
Bbafett Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 I tired to get this to work but felt that there was way too much tension on the bands and couldn't get them to stay on 100% of the time while testing the opening and closing and wings didn't close completely even though everything matched pictures. Trying to get the bands behind the blue pin seemed to be the most frustrating part that I ultimately gave up and put it back to stock 75102. Looks great but I just saw it as more difficult than it was worth. Thx though. Quote
Ninja of Fire Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Can this modification be done with only the parts in this set? Other than the Brick with Technic pin you used to hold onto the Rubber Bands. Also, is the tension on the wings too much or is it fine. Cheers, man :) Quote

I've done exactly the same to both x-wings and although the wings sometimes catch on closing, it just requires a tap to knock them back into line. I will admit the rubber band tension is high and it is a pain to get it all to fall into place, but if you persevere it does work. 4 hours ago, Ninja of Fire said: Can this modification be done with only the parts in this set? Cheers, man :) This requires more parts than are in the kit. if you follow the step by step pics you can see what you need. I never did a parts tally, I just raided the spares boxes, and ordered a few bits (mostly cosmetic rather than structural). The wing tension is about right, they don't flap about and they don't seem to overload the mechanism. As I've said before, this mod compromises the strength of the original for greater accuracy. The finished model is not as rugged as the original, but unless you're 8 and swooshing it around constantly, it's not going to fall to bits. Treat it more as a display piece. Quote
brobert Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 OK, I'll probably give in, and buy the blue T-70 today, as there's a 20% discount in TRU, but I'll definitely mod it. It would be awesome if someone who tried this mod could put together a list of extra parts, cause it's not very convenient to find for extra parts on sometimes badly lit images. (No offense Flandy, I get it, you made it for yourself, and honestly, if I came up with it, I wouldn't have the energy to did the part list either probably...but maybe someone else) Quote
BrickBuilderTONY92 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Thanks for the breakdown on the T-70 wings! Quote
LOBOT-OMY Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Respect is due to Flandy for these amazing mods! I am blown away !! I love these latest lego X-wings but I am hoping/waiting to see if lego release an OT version sometime in 2017/2018 based on these latest designs. Brick colour change is all that's needed so I would expect lego to capitalise on this current re-working of the iconic X-wing! Merry Christmas to everyone too. Quote
quark12000 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 This is really awesome, but we need a parts list and some detailed instructions. Quote
quark12000 Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Could someone please help with this? Mostly I just need to know what parts I need to get from Bricklink. I can try to figure out the build from the photos. Quote
VaderFan2187 Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Great Mod! Will do when I open my Poe X-wing Quote

Flandy Posted December 29, 2016 Author Posted December 29, 2016 I don't really have a parts list for you, I was fortunate enough to pick up a second x-wing on ebay minus figures for dirt cheap, and used that along with some spares from my expanding stash and once I'd got one side figured out, I knew which parts I still needed from bricklink. You can figure out what you need from the pics for the wings, but for the fuselage mods, the best I can suggest is play about a bit. It's what I did, I'm not the best lego builder, and I'm sure it's internal strength could be improved on. Quote
quark12000 Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Thanks, Flandy. I just love what you've done here and I want to do it for the black X-wing I've ordered. I've seen other mods, but they've got the bottom of plates showing. I also really like what you've done with the rubber bands. I don't mind them so much with my blue and grey model, but with the black and orange they'd just be garish. Does anyone else who's done this modification have a list of extra parts I'll need and/or instructions? Quote
horizon Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Excellent job Flandy, I think the instructions posted are enough to copy it. I just miss the extra parts needed to get studs up on the wings. So I'm trying alternatives... Quote
quark12000 Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Just received this set in the mail, so any help with parts is appreciated. Quote
awesometoa Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Wow! this mod is amazing! the X-wing looks so much more streamlined and actually looks like the real thing! Quote
