Posted July 15, 20168 yr Hi, I would like to present my C_model for 42042. I love 42042 set. I think it is the most underrated set. I do not like very much that often B models are not very different from A models. That is the case for 42042. B crane is still a crane. So I decided to build something different. Bulldozer My goals was to build good looking, sturdy, very playable, easy to operate (my kids tested that well :-) ) model. Features (motor operated): drive steering lifting of the blade lifting of rear rippers Manual: openable hood I also wanted: accessible battery pack. (it is simple to get it out and replace batteries) decent colour coordination (hence GT white fast strip :-) ) logical position of parts with stickers from 42042 A model Body is easy to remove and put back on. Please tolerate quality of my pictures. Thank you for feedback. Pictures: Leftover parts: Video: (click to view on flickr) Edit (reaction to instruction question from comments): I designed this completely computer free way, just building, "un-building", rebuilding, and again building. Therefore I do not have instructions - I might do it later (I need to learn how) - I do LEGOing only "computer free" way. I design stuff for living, so I do not want to use computers in my free time. EDIT 2:Â REBRICKABLE - Instructions There are instructions (hi-res PDF computer generated step-by-step, with bill of material and everything) available Edit 3: Now I made some computer renders, hope you like them: Edited December 12, 20168 yr by J_C
July 15, 20168 yr I like the functionality of your 42042. Cabin seems to be a little flattened, but anyway I like your model. I think, it will be better if you posted a video on YT, becuse vimeo is slowly
July 15, 20168 yr I think it's great. Are you willing to share any instructions to create this? Thanks.
July 15, 20168 yr I agree with you. 42042 is one of the best technic sets. Lots of good functions, big, very playable and cheap. Really good work on your MOC. I'd love to build it. :-)
July 15, 20168 yr Author I think it's great. Are you willing to share any instructions to create this? Thanks. I replied in the edit of original post. Thanks.
July 15, 20168 yr This is terrific! I've always loved the 42042 and I think your bulldozer would've been a far better B model.
July 16, 20168 yr I appreciate it when people limit themselves what parts to use...you did a great job! ;-)
July 16, 20168 yr Nice design and functionality. I find the cabin a bit odd looking as well, but the rest looks great. That driving function would keep my kid busy for a while, nice gearbox.
July 16, 20168 yr Very good look, functions and playability. You did a great model ! Only the cabin might need some improvement. Maybe it is possible with the parts you have left.
July 16, 20168 yr Looks like a set! B models should be totally different, and sometimes TLG takes the easy way, like the Xerion. I totally relate when you say "I design stuff for living, so I do not want to use computers in my free time" because it's the reason why I'm hesitant to go digital. To make instructions, I just take photos of the disassembly, and reorder them backwards. Just curious, what do you design for a living?
July 16, 20168 yr Author Just curious, what do you design for a living? toys (and also electronics [covers, cases], medical instruments, tools..), but recently it is mostly toys. Thank you very much for all replies. I actually like the cabin. It is easy to open - pull the black black pins in the back of the cabin one click out, move around forward - Duplo-kid figure fits on the seat. Kids like it. I like building with limited parts available. If I build something and need part I do not have (or wrong colour, or not enough of them) I rather redesign. Edited July 18, 20168 yr by J_C
July 16, 20168 yr Great C-Model, i like all these weird angles. And claws in the rear fit perfectly. As the others, i'd like to build this MOC if instructions is possible)
August 2, 20168 yr Hi, Could you make instructions just by disassemblying your model and taking a photos? I really like your c model and I'd love to build copy for myself. Thanks! PS Sorry, I speak a little english.
August 3, 20168 yr Author I am nearly finished with proper step-by-step instructions - same way as TLG does it. I made model in LDCad (which is amazing piece of software) Mainly for myself, so as I am able to build it again in the future. Usually when I build something I take it apart later and when I try to build it again, it is never the same, since I do not remember all the details. :-) And then I made instructions including list of parts. I am just doing some editing (adding arrows or extra view where I feel it might be helpful) Preview: 1st step and last step (195 pages of building - 44 steps in main assembly - other pages consist (in logical order as you build) sub-assemblies like chassis, gearbox, hood, etc): I am still on the fence whether I should just give away instructions for free or ask for some money. I am not sure yet. 2 more C models (of similar qualities as bulldozer) for 42042 are in the pipeline :-) Edited August 3, 20168 yr by J_C
August 3, 20168 yr Nice job on the C-model,and on the instructions. You may want to use some arrows (MLcad) on that last screenshot of the instructions you posted.
August 3, 20168 yr Author Nice job on the C-model,and on the instructions. You may want to use some arrows (MLcad) on that last screenshot of the instructions you posted. Thanks. I know, that is exact example where some extra editing is needed. Edited August 3, 20168 yr by J_C
August 3, 20168 yr I am still on the fence whether I should just give away instructions for free If you are unsure about giving something away for free then you probably shouldn't. But then if you only made them for yourself then I guess you could change a small "tip". Edited August 3, 20168 yr by allanp
August 5, 20168 yr Could you publish even unfinishied instructions? I want to build your C model really badly! 42042 is my first technic set, I've been trying to build my own bulldozer for about month without any good results. I'm refreshing this topic every hour hoping that you will post those instructions on forum! (Sorry for my english)
August 6, 20168 yr Author as I said before, I am not sure how and in what form I am going to publish the instructions (for this and also other C-models - I did not publish these models anywhere yet). Instructions for bulldozer are not finalized - I want them to be as good as possible, I do not want to publish them before I am happy with its quality (as close as possible to Lego ones) - therefore some editing of some pages is still needed. I only do legoing in my free (very limited) time. I am not sure how much time I might have next week. But maybe in like next 8-10days it might be finished. I need only couple or hours, maybe less, but I do not have "free" time every day. Thanks for understanding.
August 6, 20168 yr I love the 42042 and own 2 of them, the second will be RC. When that is built might do something daft with the first set, who knows?
August 7, 20168 yr Cool C Model and fits much with the set while presenting more change than the B model. I have a feeling the cabin could have been bigger/more detailed.
