May I present to you, my first MOC in this forum! :classic: (And I forgot to tag this as a MOC, whoops)

A large-ish scale model of a 1970's Can-Am race car. The Can-Am Series was a hugely popular north American racing series that lasted from the mid 60's to the late 70's.

It featured very lightweight innovative 2-seater open top race cars weighing only around 700-800kg with large V8-V12 engines that produced up to 1500hp. Whats not so widely known is that those cars were often faster than Formula 1 cars back in the day.

My creation is a fantasy version, it combines features from several popular cars from that era. About 900 bricks, designed in the LDD.

I hope you like it!

The McLaren M8F and the Porsche 917/10 greatly influenced my MOC. :classic:

That's a Porsche 917/30 you posted there. ;)

Very nice car! I'm not a regular visitor of the Special Themes subforum but I'm happy I did it at the right moment to see your creation.

Thank you! Yes, you're correct about the Porsche, whoopsie.

As for the special sub forum, I think its a bit of a mistake not to have a place for vehicular MCO's.

Vehicles are built in all different sizes. :) Yours for example would fit in the Creator theme I think, and then this is the right subforum. It would fit in Model Team as well, and I think many visitors of the Technic, Mindstorms & Model Team subforum are true petrolheads. That being said: I know at least one Model Team MOC got moved to the Special Themes section, I guess that moderator forgot the "Model Team" part of the Technic, Mindstorms & Model Team forum.

Did you pose the wheels like that for the picture or is your car actually able to steer? If the latter, I'm curious how you did it since I can't get to achieve working steering with wheels that fit race cars.

Thank you for explaining the sub forums to me, I have two more vehicular MOCs and I think it would be better to post them in the Model Team section. :classic:

As for the wheels, yes it does have steering! But not the conventional steering, its what I'd call tilting wishbone steering which allows steering in very tight wheelhouses:

A beautiful model!

How boring is today's motor racing compared to these monsters from the 60's and 70's...

And an ingenious solution for the steering. Can it be operated by the steering wheel, or do you have to adjust the wheels by hand?

I have to adjust the wheels by hand, I'm still working on a solution for that one, but due to the cramped front of the car this proves to very difficult. But I will prevail.

And I agree with the 60' and 70's being the most interesting two decades in racing history. Luckily some of the surviving cars are still being raced hard today, look at this sweet gem:

that looks cracking, there will be many of this type of race car at Silverstone this weekend, they sound as good as they look

I wish I had a chance to see them race in person. Maybe in Spa Francorchamps. :classic:
