Woundn't this be too close to a re-release of the Santa Fe Super Chief?

well, it would only be if the ALCO would be in the same colour scheme as the Super Chief. The design of the ALCO is definitely different than an EMD FT. And plus, even if LEGO would want to use a real life colour scheme they'd have a lot of colours to choose from. And also, wouldn't a christmas train be painted in red, green and white? But it would most likely not happen.

nesquik where did you get this information? I would love a Christmas train and hope it's a steam engine hopefully a medium one maybe even a small one seeing how they pack al the power function in (Or if you have to buy your own). Great news!

Due to my age, I associate steam with Christmas. Diesel electric might fit more with the younger generation. The CN or CP Christmas train that travels throughout Canada or USA are pulled by modern diesels. I guess it would be fun to be on the product team that decides which type of engine get green lighted.

If this is true, I'd suggest that something similar to the Constitution Train Chase could be a reasonable option. If you don't include PF and just make it push-along, £60 or £70 would be realistic. Include PF, and you're looking at £100, which is probably too high for the 'winter village' market.

That said, I was speaking to a designer in December about trains (as well as other things), and I got the strong impression that the large driver wheel molds were sat gathering dust, and that there was nothing in the pipeline that would cause them to be dusted off. So bearing that in mind, I wonder if the train would just use the normal train wheels?

One thing I am thankful of though, and that's that it doesn't look like being a re-release of the original. That loco was pretty rubbish by current standards.

Only if it would be a tank engine. I would love to see how LEGO would make a big steam locomotive using standerd wheels. And about the driver molds gathering dust, it doesn't mean that they won't be used anymore. It means that they don't have a use for them right now I'm sure they will come in handy when LEGO will make a new steam locomotive.

I think for most people a steam locomotive would be associated with Christmas but I think something like I showed would also be looking good in Christmas colors.

Yes but my point is that the designer was talking as though there were no uses planned for those molds, and that was barely two months ago. Sure, it's possible that they might not have known about this, or that this has just emerged in the last two months, but I dunno...

Why not? It was, in my opinion, one of the best steam trains Lego have ever done. Plus, it just works - perfectly!

It's just small and not interesting. Emerald night is king :) I know guys trying to sell constitution train and can't give them away.

Yeah I think the Constitution is a great set; but its an era which doesn't draw me as much as later rail history. Trains like the Constitution were small Engines that only lasted until larger trains arrived on the scene. The eras that interest me is the early 1900's were the big black steam train entered the scene and the garnish of the previous century was lost; the 1950's transition era (diesels and steam together!), and off course the modern era.

Now if the new Lego Train is an early 4-4-0; I will be happy to get any train; although I'd rather have a big 2-8-2; a 4-6-2, or dare I say a 4-8-4 :)

Hopefully it'll be something a bit more appealing than the constitution, but nevertheless its a train. And hey, hope for the best, expect the worst. Who knows, it could be something totally different from what we expect. The possibility of it being a diesel is very interesting, there's more possible variety imo, and a diesel christmas train would just be rather unique.

Give us a UCS of the Jupiter or any classic steam and I'm sure people will buy it..

for US train fan Jupiter would be nice. But for people in other parts of the world. No, at least not for me.

Just had to google that. It's not my thing tbh. Looks like a cross between the Toy Story train and the Constitution.

I've seen the replica Jupiter operating last year(its my current wallpaper on my computer, the engine smells like a BBQ pit too since they use Hickory Wood as fuel). I supported the Lego Ideas project that features it and 119. I also want more people to help that project to, the more trains which enter review on Lego Ideas the better!

But while I love both trains for their historical value (and I live close to were the replica units run at); I would rather see something from the late steam era. I also agree the finished model would be similar to the Toy Story and Constitution trains. That's why Sava's new 10-wheeler project is appealing to me. BLACK, that's a proper steam train color.

Maybe the UP 844? It may look plain in all black with some grey, but it still looks pretty "steam-y"(I had no other way to name it) and looks more appealing without all the bright colors.

This photo from James Belmont (moderator of the Rails Through the Wasatch page on Facebook) shows what could be a more flashy scheme for UP 844; her greyhound two tone paint: http://www.railpictures.net/photo/315641/

The problem though with UP 844 in Lego form is with the driver wheels. When Lego introduced the drivers with the Emerald Night they made the molds so they molded 2 flange wheels and one blind wheel together. That is why most steam trains we have in Lego form have come as trains with six drivers; since the mold produces exactly 3 wheels per set (hence why the Toy Story train comes with 2 blind wheels despite the fact the train is a 4-4-0 and doesn't use those wheels in the final build). This creates an issue for any 8 wheel driver train ever being seen in Lego form. I wish Lego could solve this since most of my favorite steam trains have 8 drive wheels!

I think an interesting solution to your 8 wheeler problem could be to create a brick built pair of blind drivers;

And then have the wheels in F-B-B-F or a F-B-F-B setup?

justa thought...
