M_slug357 Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I wish they went more radical with trains What do you mean? I'd say that this WV train is a pretty radical departure from just about any other train released thus far. Just cause they go radical doesn't guarantee that it'll be good. Maybe next time TLG will go radically to the direction you're probably hoping for. That almost everyone was hoping for... Quote
Blackpool Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I think its fair to say this train is a winter village set that happens to be a train rather than a train that happens to work with a winter village. Due to this, I think its going to be disappointing to train enthusiasts but winter village collectors will largely be happy with it Quote
Dan-147 Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) Agreed. I intend to buy it for my winter village where it will fit right in but I will not mix it into my regular trains. But maybe this will be an occasion to finally recover the Toy Story train. My wife had decided that it would be the Holiday train at the time. We've been fans of the Winter Village since the beginning so I was very disappointed that last year's set was a reissue of a previous one. Needless to say, I am thrilled that this year it is a completely new set. Can't wait to get it! Dan-147 Edited August 23, 2016 by Dan-147 Quote
zephyr1934 Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Well the WV train is interesting... wish they had gone for a 4-4-0 instead of a 4-2-0. Looks like a reworked Toy Story train. Hopefully this has a black bogie plate under the engine instead of the current yellow ones... hum... might be red. And those !@#$% bums at Lego, they stole my idea for having a wheel powered contraption on a car... worse yet... of it being a running train. Naw, I was thinking about it but actually I am glad to see that feature. Quote
Pizzareno Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 zephyr1934, you say they stole your idea for a wheel powered contraption. I feel the same way. Check out my train from December 2013 - Quote
AlmightyArjen Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Knowing TLG is always working 2 years ahead, it's still possible that they came up with the idea having watched your video. Though they have also used a wheel powered contraption (is that another word for "mechanism"?) in the 4533 Snow Remover set. Quote
Paperballpark Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 I'm afraid the idea of using an axle to move something else is not at all new. I very much doubt they 'stole' anyone's idea... Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Lego designers have been known to visit EB and other Lego sites. They could look at MOCs and receive inspiration. I doubt the spinning feature was stolen, but they could have subconsciously incorporated the design in the new model based on what they saw earlier. Or it is possible that they developed the idea on their own while others came up with it as well. It happens all of the time. Quote
Pizzareno Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Of course it is nearly impossible to tell where an idea comes from these days as we are so connected by the web and you could see something and take it onboard and forget where it comes from very easily. I really just wanted to point out I did this 3 years ago and LEGO's idea wasn't new Regardless I'll still probably try and get one of these sets. Quote
pyro690 Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Love the old steamer trains! Will get 1 or 2 of the WV trains when they come out. Quote

Due to this, I think its going to be disappointing to train enthusiasts but winter village collectors will largely be happy with it I agree with this completely. My hope is that Lego will see that trains are a popular item and will consider releasing more of them, provided that the Winter train sells well. In addition, if people enjoy the Winter Train a lot, it might convince them to buy more train items in general. I feel that trains are similar to modular buildings in a way; you can never buy just one, or you need something else to go with them. If you only have the Winter Train set, you'll probably want more track. When you have more track, you might want a freight train to go around your set up as well... Quote

Nope nope nope, I'm sure those little minifigures snuck in to my bedroom at night and rifled through my head to find the idea that one night I forgot to wear my tinfoil hat to bed! (grin) In any event, excellent work Pizzareno and good to see we have some sort of new train set. Quote
storms26 Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 I think that even though the idea has been thought of before, the Lego group is at least partially listening to its fans and joining the community. Although many people dislike the rest of the set, I think that it's the little features that make it kinda neat. If only the set was maybe a 3 in 1, or if it was combinable like the old Racers sets. I have to say this is what happened with me. I started collecting the WV a few years ago an have been an on and off buyer of the Architecture series but after buying my WV train I now have (almost ashamed to say ) have 5 other trains and lots of track! It's made me into a crazy train person! Edited December 17, 2016 by Fenestra Clarity Quote

Rail Co Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 my question to everyone is: Is it worth it for a train guy to pick up the Winter Village Train? Thanks -RailCo Quote

Thanks -RailCo If you don't already have trains = Yes If you have less than 4 trains = Coin Toss If you have more than 4 trains = No (but now might be a good time to bricklink the large wheels) Quote
koalayummies Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 If you're undecided but clearly considering it you should probably just get it. No interest in WV train here even if I had 0 trains, would prefer to see more trains along the lines of the BNSF or Maersk but the playability is low so those are generally AFOL or teenager-only prospective sales figures. Thanks -RailCo I have almost every official train (even the weird looking ones) dating back to the Load N' Haul, plus a few MOCs. I would say since I missed the first holiday train, YES buy this one. It's a great little xmas display train, it's cute, and I'm not unhappy I bought it. Ten years from now when there is no holiday train update, you'll be wishing you dropped the $99 for this one, even though it's slightly lack luster. I just have it sitting on a mantle. It'll probably see the light of day for 1 month every year, but I feel it has more xmas appeal to non-lego peopel (my wife) than my other trains I used to run around the tree. My wife likes this set on display and used to complain about the other trains around the tree. Quote

Thanks -RailCo Depending on what do you see as worth. If you are a LEGO Winter Village set collector, then yes for completeness. If you plan to collect all trains LEGO ever released then yes. If you think you can do a better job MOCing your own Xmas train, then no. If you plan to speculate on it, then it's maybe. There is risk the LEGO bauble could burst or LEGO release another Xmas train and future resale value of this Xmas train could go down. For me since it is somewhat similar to the Xmas train I MOC a couple of years ago, I don't plan on getting this one. Quote
Duq Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 For the money it's not a bad train parts pack although if you want to MOC a proper steam loco you'll need to buy two... Quote
Rail Co Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Thanks @M_slug357, @jrathfon, and @dr_spock for all the input. I actually really like the train till I say the way they incorporated the motorization, that's what has been putting me off. -RailCo Quote

ALCO Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I got two of the WV train and am very happy with them! I'd like to get a 3rd and mash two of them together to build a 4-6-2 MOC I designed. So then I could have a cute little winter Christmas train and then a really cool Christmas MOC!! Quote
