Sorry, I haven't found pictures of the bmw yet - is it set 42061?

I wondered why there was no 42061 with the pictures I looked at!

Thanks for your thoughts, I suppose tracks are better for off-roading but in my opinion I think wheels would look better. But that's just my opinion?.

The lego fan.

42061 is the telehandler which, along with the 42066 Air Race Jet, has yet to make an official appearance. 42053 is the BMW.

Okay, it looks like, now that we have price information, I was raging about 42065 being overpriced because I assumed it was $100, based on something inaccurate. Now, if the price is $60, it's actually a fair deal. I still dislike the simplicity and the lack of L motors or a new IR receiver, but at least it is actually a reasonable value, given that the PF parts alone are worth $45.

I was wondering why you were complaining about being overpriced while and everywhere else it was only $60 but in the earlier page you were mentioning it as $100.

Wow, looks bumpy and slow, and that is running on two L motors :(

I think it's bumpy because the L motors vibrate a lot when in action. From this perspective it makes more sense to use the M motors.

M motors have less torque than, but the same speed as, L motors. Looking at the model, I guess the drive relies more on speed. Remember that the 8043 excavator used M motors for drive, and that's a rather hefty beast.

I think the bumpyness of the replica is coming from the use of 16t gears as idler wheels for the tracks. The doubled up 3 x 0.5 pulley wheels will be smoother.

8043 is geared down... this tracked racer seems to have 1:1 drive and the tracks seems to just spin due to the poor friction against surface. Maybe it would had work better if geared down a bit, or if they solved this problem on the original version thanks to the less torque of the m-motors - less spin.

Could be, the bumpiness looks to me like a result of the tracks somehow, so different idler wheels could be a big factor. I dont have any big tracks (just the smaller modified chain stuff) so i dont have first hand experience.

Either way, i'd expect lego to put out something better as a final product.

LEGO tracks are never smooth.

By design of your creation, you can make it more jerky, or less jerky. But it will never be fluently silky smooth. For that, John Dunlop invented the tire. Tracks have (in real life) different objectives than smoothness of the movement.

edit: it is John not Joey (Joey was motorcycle racer). It took me a little while to figure out, what was wrong with my original post. My bad.

no m motors are slightly faster: http://www.philohome.com/motors/motorcomp.htm

yeah they are sposed to be good to get over things and not sink in lose soil and sand, thats why excavators, bulldozers etc have tracks

This is the correct answer. The final movement will be not super smooth, but much better than the replica video shows. Also don't forget, that LEGO makes excessive pre-testing with children too:

So if they wouldn't had liked the racer, than it couldn't make it till the serial production.

Hi there,

after the the pictures of the BMW were out last week, I tried to build a replica. As always, I'm limited on parts, specially in the correct colors. But have a look at first:

As you can easily see, I used a lot of workarounds caused by missing parts, like the soft dampers in the suspension - which can't stand the weight of the model. Second thing is, that I had to change some colors like the white nose or the black seat. At least I added some minor details like better foot pegs or levers and hand protectors at the steering.

Some more poor quality fotos:

20161114_140504-816x459.jpg

I hope you enjoy it in the same way as I do, beside the wrong colors. I will leave it assembled until I have an original set. So I still can make some fotos of the ingenious swing arm or the great front Telelever suspension.

I actually built my own 42057 helicopter, I like it a lot and will probably get it if I find it for $10-12, I built my own in orange, and though it is neat it looks a little unfinished under the back panels and pseudo-engine, still not going to complain at the MSRP

Also is 42059 the azure color of the latest dragster because it looks that way

It also looks like the 42062 will have black 1x1 beams (basically bushings for pins) and it might be my favorite of the wave to be honest

Lastly I believe the 42064 boat has a new piece on the helicopter (and possibly shared with 42062) holding the rotor on, it looks like it is similar to element 87082 but with axles instead of pins, this would be very welcome to me

As a whole, something does seem different to me about this wave though, I can't exactly pin-point it but the design of the sets seem a bit different then I'm used to, maybe because summer 2016 was full of pretty big sets, and this wave is a little more focused on the small, but I couldn't say for sure, some items just seem a little unfinished to me, or rushed, not always a bad thing though :) I'm looking forward to 2017!

I've been studying 42062 and it looks like a pretty clever set, the truck has steering as you would imagine, but the gear turned to activate it is at an angle, not difficult but something they didn't have to do, and it seems like that is a foot in the door of what this set will be, I figured out how the boom extends which is actually very simple, just flipping a lever the pneumatic bushings on the side of the lifting arm don't look as though they move, they just help to align the device, flipping a lever on the front of the grabber seems to open or close the front and rear pneumatic bushings, all this with rear wheel steering and an elevating boom make this my favorite set by far, a lot to do with the little guy!
... and I believe the truck has opening doors, and I love touches like that!

Also the secondary model is actually pretty decent looking and something we haven't seen much of or at this scale, bravo, 10/10, good game.

Re: 42063

Being a motorcycle rider and a fan of the BMW 1200 GS I'm not loving the whole tank and under the seat area. The profile view is weak.

I do believe I got that set and the older 6649 sweeper as well.

A bit off the topic but that front sweeper element is awesome!  And, probably one of a kind, except maybe in some of car wash sets. I have been around Lego since 1978 when I was a young kid, but I never did get this set, wish I had...

I am looking forward to the cancelled 42051 Airport Rescue Vehicle.  Wonder why they changed the set# though. I realize they like to keep in line each year since they started 42000's in 2013, well actually 41999 if you count the 4x4 Crawler, but if they change the set# to follow this coming winter's sets then 42051 will not be assigned to any set.  Is it a sure thing this set is coming out 1H2017?  Seems like a nice complement to the 8454 from 2003.  Sorry, been so busy w/ my Bricklink store, regular job and life haven't been on Eurobricks in some time, instead of browsing 35 pages relating to 2017 sets, decided I'd just ask about this set.

Well, we're still waiting on info for 42061 and 42066, so 42051 or whatever number to which it's going to be assigned is probably taking a back seat here. I think it being released is highly unlikely myself.

I built a replica of 42065 and I can confirm it is very smooth and fast. The pully wheels are the only wheels that "touch the ground" and they are on the edge of the tracks where they are smooth.

I have a favour to ask you could you please make a video? I knew that it would be fast. Just I wish to see it. Regards

Looks good! what kind of motors do you have in there? Any chance of seeing an in action video to get an idea of the speed of the final model?

Posted (edited)

Here's a quick (and sloppy) video. Holding my phone and driving is a bit tough but you get the idea.

I first started with 2 L motors, one plugged directly into each wheel, front and back, but I saw the model was too wide. I had a suspicion they were using M motors to make it fit. Sure enough that's the case. It is running on 2 L motors, same configuration as the other replica posted. The gearing I am using is 1:1 so it's the same speed as if I had plugged the motors directly into the wheels. The track geometry is correct on this one. The pully wheels on the outer edges of the tracks is what makes it work so smoothly.

I read somewhere on brickset forum about BMW supercar launching presumably next year however with more reasonable price than Porsche.

For instance BMW i8 was in lego educational commercial last year.

Take this with grain of salt, but lego doesnt have affordable supercar and Porsche in many countries isnt available in regular shops.
