Posted August 23, 20168 yr Hello all! First proper MOC in a very long time, and certainly the first one I'm proud enough of to post. As most of you probably know, the original concept art for Star Wars was done by Ralph McQuarrie. A lot of his work was incredibly smooth & clean, almost giving off a retrofuturistic vibe. I thought it'd be fun to try and capture that in LEGO form, specifically his Y-Wing concept, as that is my favorite. I took a good amount of inspiration from a couple of other builders who've done the same thing, like Ryan Page and Scott Peterson. Anyway, without further ado, here it is: For the windscreen sections, I used this method to give the pieces a glass-like appearance. The photo doesn't capture that too well, but I can assure you it looks like glass in person. Really happy with that. Here's McQuarrie's original concept art for reference: And more images of my MOC here. I had a lot of fun with this project, and I'm hoping to do more MOCs based on McQuarrie's artwork in the future. I'll probably turn this into a series of sorts. I hope you guys like it, and thanks for checking it out! Edited August 23, 20168 yr by Nokturn
August 23, 20168 yr Great, always wanted to do this. However, I need to address the fact that the concept of Y-wing was created by Colin Cantwell, not Ralph McQuarrie.

You're right, he created the studio model and the original design, but my MOC is based on McQuarrie's art specifically. Semantics, I know. Edited August 23, 20168 yr by Nokturn

Is that a cockpit on the bottom of the ship?! As for the model itself. It look great. I love the front area where the pilots are. Nice SNOT work. Can you get a gunner in there? The only thing I don't like about it and this is not your fault. Is the engine pylons, too thin. Jamie
August 24, 20168 yr I love the Star Wars movie Y-wing, but I don't like this concept. The nose of the craft gives me the chills. My personal taste aside, your model is fantastic. Bravo!
August 24, 20168 yr Looks really nice and smooth. I've never really been a fan of this particular style of art work but you've done a great job translating it into LEGO. The stud shooter and spring launchers are a bit distracting though, I like action features on LEGO models but they contrast too much in this case I think.
August 24, 20168 yr This is great! I would love to see more MOCs using Ralph McQuarrie's art as the inspiration.
August 24, 20168 yr Author Thanks for all the positive feedback and constructive criticism, guys. Much appreciated!
August 24, 20168 yr In a strange way I love this design and I honestly see them working as a next generation of Y-Wings for the New Republic. You did the design so much justice well done! I love it!

August 25, 20168 yr I've always enjoyed Ralph's Star Wars concepts, and you've definitely done the Y-Wing justice here. Congrats.

I've always enjoyed them too. I'm not sure when I'll be able to do this, but I am definitely planning on making more MOCs based on his artwork.
