LiLmeFromDaFuture Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 (edited) So for an evening and a late night's work, I decided to make this TIE Fighter from modifying the body of Darth Vader's Tie Advance (75150) & the wings of the First Order Special Forces (75101) into what you see now. I believe I have done satisfactory work translating the ball shape into LEGO with brick elements, and, refining the design of the wing with less studs and pieces whilst maintaining the sturdy structure, as well a strong connection to the body—have a look! Many thanks for taking the time to check this out, and I appreciate any comments you have! Outside wing detail Left side ball detail Inside wing detail Backside detail Topside detail TIE Fighter on tripod stand Offered below is the LDD file, and the BrickStock part list. The LDD file consists the model, grouped into sub-assemblies and separated into sections, with functioning instructions for building convenience. Despite what many users commonly experienced, accomplishing a working generated guide is manageable through grouping the model into sub-assemblies, otherwise the program will falter and fail to generate the building steps properly. Though oddly as well, the program cannot process various connections properly, resulting in model being separated into the sections as shown. These difficulties can be noticed when the program chokes at some point of the process bar, then begins to skip around—this model experiences this in a certain area. The difficulty in particular occurs around the steps for assembling the arms, which will anchor the wings, but this is the only error in the guide and small enough to pass over without frustration . However if you are not convinced enough of how decent it works, try the file yourself, the model still should be grouped in sub-assemblies when opened . lilme_tie_fighter.lxf Edited January 25, 2017 by LiLmeFromDaFuture Quote
khatmorg Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 I'm a bit confused why you use the FO wings but don't use the connection. The main advantage over the old OT version is the sturdier connection. It looks like you only use a single pin each side to connect the wings to the body, that's not sturdy at all. I would wager thats even worse than the OT version since the will now also rotate in addition to wobble. I like what you did aside from that though. The dish on the back looks perfect. I've also always wanted a stand for mine so it doesn't scrape the tiles on the bottom, too lazy to design one though. Quote

Apologies, as I did not bother show any detail of that connection, but I indeed have implemented the connection in question; exactly with use of clips. The single pin is of (6249), which is use to established the connection through the whole arm and its side of the cockpit. Edited August 24, 2016 by LiLmeFromDaFuture Quote
Bolingbroke Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Looks great. I like those fancy design things on the outside wings better on the 9492 tie than on the new one. They simply look better. Quote

Arthur Schopenhauer Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Great result! Looks very good and accurate :) Have you considered to substitute the "facet bricks" (87620) with the so called "macaroni bricks"? I think they would look very well and give the cockpit a more spherical outline. In fact giving the cockpit a "spherical" shape was the main issue for me in designing my own TIE advanced. I ended up making it "taller" than that of TLG's 75150, to enhance a little the contrast with the lateral pylons. I think that this would work well also for a TIE fighter like yours. Anyway If you're interested I can send you the link to the thread about my MOC, it's a bit difficult to describe it in words :) Quote

I have indeed seen your MOC, and have not considered the macaroni bricks until now! However, upon implementing, the elements create an unsightly contrast with the surrounding bricks, as they are not curved. Though, it might be less apparent with outside of LDD I think I may make the cockpit taller too, for the top portion by one plate particularly, as it appears squashed compared to the bottom. Quote

I'm very curious about the result! In fact, some time ago I was about to design a TIE fighter moc myself, and your model is very close to the "target" i had in mind Quote
LiLmeFromDaFuture Posted September 13, 2016 Author Posted September 13, 2016 Hello everyone, I attempted to upload the BrickStock file for the convenience of whosoever will want to build this with ease, but EuroBricks is being restrictive on uploading the type of file "bsx" Does anyone know any Lego oriented sites where the file can be hosted there? Much appreciated! Quote

The design of the stand is not originally mine, it is yellost. Though my revisions simplified, as well reinforced, the structure with less pieces, and enhanced the aesthetics by implementing tile elements on the base. Also to mention, the revised stand can now accommodate other air/spacecraft such as LEGO's X-wing sets. However, I have yet to manage implementing the ability to adjust the pivot as yellost did—that would be more easier for me to accomplish with physical bricks. Here his is original design: Because I made a special one for my Tantive IV which I am rather proud of. It's a tripod which I tried to rebuild from memory in LDD. It looks something like this except that the ball connectors are somehow attached to the main bar to steady it. then I had to remove one of the inverted slopes on the bottom of the ship (the one right next to the round part with the small wheels) and slide the whole thing into place on top of the stand. It might look really flimsy like that, but in fact its right on the gravitational center of the model, so it works great. Edited September 14, 2016 by LiLmeFromDaFuture Quote

Ramses25 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Hi ! Your TIE Fighter looks very, very nice ! I love how you managed to add the inner spokes and adapt the very sturdy wing connection of the official LEGO TIE ! I would add only one thing to your model : the twin-ion engines ! Just two trans-red tiles and here we go ! http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data/500/TIE_ion_engines.JPG Ramses25 Quote

I actually never studied the TIE Fighter when designing this, but how convenient it is that there is already space available for the detail where the 1 x 1 cheese slopes are placed—many thanks! Quote
LiLmeFromDaFuture Posted September 25, 2016 Author Posted September 25, 2016 TIE Updates The design for the laser cannons has been revised to subtly reflect a more so aggressive look. However, with the alterations, the 2 x 1 inverted slope that was once above the laser cannons had to be removed. Here, a 2 x 1 inverted slope with cutout would be handy… As well it can be noticed that the control handle has received restyling into a more spiffy-looking design with use of the (95344) with the (99021) as the base, rather than the previous droid body, as in the 75150 set. Following up with the aggressiveness of the subtle transparent green detail for the lasers, the same has been fashioned for the ion engines, which before I did not know to include until Ramses25 mentioned thereof. Also, the connection to the wings has been altered to hinge locking plates. I am not sure if this is more so secure than the other elements, but I for one enjoy the modularity of disconnecting the wings and euphonious "click" they make when snapped into place, as well the ability handle the cockpit in the palm while examining it.
