Long time lurker first time poster! I've been doing Lego train for well over a decade but all my steam locos haven't been able to run well. I've been tasked with making one for My lug that will need to run all day at the show so I'm out looking for a great base (layout of the wheels) to build a custom on. Wanted a model similar to the emerald night with an extra large wheel axle. Something like a polar express. I've got the passenger cars figured out just need a nice locomotive

Any one have any instructions they would reccommend or a place to start? Many thanks in advance!

Two words if you want a Berkshire 2-8-4 like the Polar Express:

Anthony Sava. (Link: http://www.bricklink...ID":"21320617"} ) His instructions for an 8 wide steam loco are superb, and that's where I got my starting point in 2011 / 12. if you don't want an 8 wide engine, I have a six wide alternative available in LDD format, though instead of a Berkshire 2-8-4, it's a 4-8-2 Mountain, basically the reverse of the Polar Express engine.

EDIT: What colors are you passenger car? I'm curious as I may I have a engine or two in my MOCpage you might like: http://www.moc-pages.com/folder.php/135602

Thanks for the resources! I picked up a Sava set today. So far so good!
