WesternOutlaw Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I keep all boxes, but they do take up a lot of space. Here is another thread relating to Lego storage: Lego Storage Quote
Username_Taken Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Yea, I just cut out the front box pic and the rest is recycle (which all of you who dont keep the box should be doing! ;-) ) Yeah thats exactly what I do! I've got a big stack of box covers in my closet right now in fact. :-) U_T Quote
salty tbone Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I get rid of the boxes and never really think twice about it. I just don't have the space, and to me, it's the bricks inside that matter. *sweet* Of course, I'll now contradict that and say two of the more cherished parts of my collection are my boxes for the original 6075 yellow castle and first-run Main Street sets from my childhood -- the only boxes to survive the dark age purge of the mid-90s. Although that has more to do with sentimentality than anything else. One thing I do hold on to are Shop at Home catalogs. I have every one since 1997 (the end of my dark age). They don't take up a lot of space and their photos make them great references (even if Lego does reverse images too often to fit their layouts). Quote
Lord Of Pies Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I keep all my boxes, because if I sell some sets later in life they might be worth more! Quote
mutley777 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 It's quite sad but i have every box for all the sets i own. That's alot of boxes i can tell you :-D . Quote
Brainbox Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Yeah, I keep the boxes too. I collapse them with the flaps/tabs on the inside of the box, then tie them together in bundles according to size. They then go down the side of my wardrobe, where there's a gap between it and the wall. I don't really know why I keep them, but I do. And they actually take up less space than you might think. As in, there's plenty room for more. X-D Quote
jifel Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 only canisters for bionicles, otherwise goodbye! jifel Quote
simonjedi Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I buy sets for the sets. The boxes go. I don't care that this means value is drastically reduced, but the value is in my pleasure. basically this, with my own edits i should recycle the boxes. Quote
Turaga of Force Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Yes, I keep all of my boxes, canisters, instructions, magazines, Shop@Home catalogs, advertisements, etc. Quote
Brickmaster Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I have all my large boxes saved - it takes up a whole wall of shelfs in my garage. Its quite a sight I must say :-$ Quote
General Zen Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 If I kept the box for each set I bought, lets just say there would be a high chance of me living on the streets due to the lack of space in my home! X-D However, I still have half the original box for the republic gunship set! ;-) Quote
JoeMI6 Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Apart from some Bionicle canisters, I don't really keep any set boxes. They just take up too much room and although some are pretty nice, in the end, they're just something that helps sell the goodies inside. Quote
zouave Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I keep my boxes. Unfortunatly, they take up a lot of space. My closet and top bunk of bed are packed. Quote
Mr Hobbles Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I used to keep then, then I got far too many. Threw them all out. I don't keep any now. Quote
KimT Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 OF COURSE!!! THERE'S NO COLLECTOR WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL BOXES!! I mean, yeah, I don't have the boxes of all my sets, but I think that from the oficial number of sets that I own (Brickset.com informs me that I own 89 sets), I don't have 5 or 6 boxes. And there are about 80 which have the original bags. So, yeah, I keep boxes :-D Really...guess I'm not a collector then. I've got most of the SW sets and almost all released new Castle sets and a bunch of Exo Force, Classic Space, Classic Castle and so on and NO BOXES. I'd still consider myself a SW collector. I build the sets and throw away the boxes - no exceptions...but then again I don't have the UCS MF KimT Quote
Dfenz Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) If I kept the box for each set I bought, lets just say there would be a high chance of me living on the streets ! X-D ;-) At least you'd have plenty of cardboard boxes!!! I keep all my boxes in the attic - funny enough my heating bills seem to be reducing slightly each year. It must be the extra insulation that the boxes provide!! David Edited January 7, 2008 by Dfenz Quote
Guurahk101 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) I have all my instructions in a box in my closet, and all my boxes (from 2003 on, when I decided to start saving the boxes) in my closet or under my bed. I put all the smaller boxes in the larger ones, then inside the largest ones. It saves a TON of space too. But I am only human, if I have a more than one of a set (Really only Crossbow Attack recently, if it's a tiny one, or from a Polybag I throw them away. Edited January 8, 2008 by Guurahk101 Quote
Ogel111 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I keep the the boxes of big star wars sets or limited edition colectible ones. I still have my box for the republican gunship. :-D Quote
legotrainfan Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 (edited) I usually keep most boxes, but several of them are in very poor condition. For some sets I got as a child I don't have the boxes anymore. What I do throw away are the boxes for straight and curved rails (4515 and 4520). I had so many boxes for those rails that I thought it didn't matter to throw them away. And I bought some used sets on eBay, and sometimes the boxes were not included. brickzone Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I keep the boxes; I package them one inside another. Currently most of my boxes are contained one inside another within five large boxes; City Harbour, King's Castle Siege, Caf Quote
Rickard Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Do you keep your LEGO boxes when you got a new set? I've Haven't had a real set since I was A Kid. I always buy off bricklink or ePay, so I realy don't care about Sets, like take my Fort Legoradio, $150 for the "Set" or $7 for the instructions. and $40 for ALL the part plus enough to Expand my Fort to fit my 80x80 Dacta Base Plate! but I right now am waiting on Cafe' Corner, and I imagine I'll trash the packaging too. I'm the guy you guys LOVE to hate. As soon as I find the Glue Lego uses to Make their Displays, I'm going to start Permanently build some of my Mini Fig Scale Building modules! I more care about finishing A build and using it in my animation, and Once I use a set in a film I want to keep it together forever in case I ever need it again Much like the MGM Back lot. Quote
MetroiD Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I was wondering whether you guys keep your LEGO boxes after you've opened them, built the sets and/or added the bricks to your collection? I know that many of you buy specific sets with the intention of reselling them later on, once they've gained extra value as rare vintage items, and in that case it is only logical that you stack away the boxes and keep them in a mint & sealed condition. However, for the ones of you who are like me and do not plan on selling their collection /at least not in sets/ or buying up just for the sake of reselling sets, do you actually keep those big (ridiculously huge in some cases) boxes after you've once torn them open? Back in the days of my childhood (late 80s / early 90s), LEGO boxes were a work of art themselves - especially the ones of bigger sets. With plastic display cases and windows in the box itself to see the contents, they featured some great photography of the set (far less misleading that nowadays' pics ). So it comes as no suprise that back when I was a kid I'd stack my boxes on top of a wardrobe. In a few years, the wardrobe had a huge pile on top of it which was rapidly collecting massive amounts of dust... So I had to throw them away. However, now that my hobby has been brought back to life, I find myself doing the exact same thing (sans that piling-on-top-of-wardrobe thing). Probably it's because the sheer size of sets such as the Agents Mission 6 or Indy Crystal Skull Temple still adds up to the value of it, just like a lil kid would think... Well, in any case, I'll get around to throwing them out one of these days, that's for sure. But I guess I might keep the better ones. How do YOU handle your boxes then? Quote
