Lego2016Lego Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 (edited) I am making the biggest MOC I have ever made I am making a dump truck and I am going to need to order parts but this is what I have so far. Tell me what you think! Edited August 30, 2016 by Lego2016Lego Quote
M_longer Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 You have aproximatelly less than 10% needed parts. Have you considered going with functions, not with size? Dump trucks made in 1:17 scale require less parts and can look good. Quote

It will have functions it will be AWD, have steering, have a dumping bucket, a cab that has everything working like the real thing, and a fake engine. and I have more parts but I am taking a brake right now. M_longer Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Have you ever built something as big as this model? Quote
Kristof Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Good luck! Even if it's true that starting with smaller might be a little wiser, I say go for it :D It's never a fault to buy parts, even if you didn't finish this eventually, I'm sure they won't end up useless :) One remark - you will need much more power than on XL to propulse this a reasonable way ;) Quote
Lego2016Lego Posted August 30, 2016 Author Posted August 30, 2016 The XL is geared down a lot and it has difs. And the front is going to have a XL too. Quote
2LegoOrNot2Lego... Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Curious how this will turn out... Quote
jorgeopesi Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I don't understand massive MOCs, you need a lot of parts, you loose performance due the high weight and it is not funny build in plenty room but good luck amyway, just my opinion. Quote

syclone Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Interesting how it will turn out, seems to be an enormous scale to work Quote

Lego2016Lego Posted August 30, 2016 Author Posted August 30, 2016 I am almost done with the front suspension and it will not be AWD. Quote
Lego2016Lego Posted August 30, 2016 Author Posted August 30, 2016 I have put on the front axel. Tell me what you think. Quote
2LegoOrNot2Lego... Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Independent suspension is not really that common on trucks... ...so it is not that realistic! Quote

KikoTube Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I think you have to build that much more stable... Quote
Lego2016Lego Posted August 30, 2016 Author Posted August 30, 2016 I think you have to build that much more stable... I am going to reinforce it. Quote
suffocation Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 (edited) It looks like a decent start. You'll have to reinforce the structure, though. I'm not too sure about the geometry of the rear axle - as far as I can see you've got a ball joint at either end and a turntable in between. This basically turns it into a (rather unstable) pendular axle. As for the front axle, have a look at this: bricksafe.com/pages/hateofallhatreds/front-axle-with-portal-hubs Edited August 30, 2016 by suffocation Quote
Kristof Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 The XL is geared down a lot and it has difs. And the front is going to have a XL too. 2 XLs sounds like the very minimum if you want it to ever move at least at snail speed :D I am almost done with the front suspension and it will not be AWD. To bad. In such scale, that's somewhat obligatory to make AWD :D I have put on the front axel. ... Tell me what you think. It looks super flimsy with those half beams. These half pins will suffer. In this scale, you simply have to deal with real-truck issues, like weight distribution, torques etc. Big dump trucks usually have the suspension designed that the wheels tip inwards when there is no load. Otherwise these would bend outwards when loaded. All in all, I'd suggest you to check as many big truck mocs as possible. And you can start with Lucio's garrage :D Good luck! Quote
trekman Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 If that is the shape of your main chassis, then I would say that you need to have a deeper frame, with more diagonal bracing. Look at the Technic Unimog, the designers there used diagonals to brace the top and bottom of the chassis to reduce flex. And it was only half the length of your truck. You need to understand a little more about beams and how they work. Loads are carried on the top and bottom flanges, they further apart they are, then a greater load can be carried -with minimal distortion. I hope it works out for you. Quote

offroadcreations Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Good luck on this! I do agree that it MUST be reinforced to prevent part damage and increase stability. But once you figure that out, this truck will be pretty awesome! Quote
Rishab N Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Good start but very ambitious. I agree you need to add some diagonal bracing and more layers of beams. You could try and put some of the grey frames on the sides for further reinforcement as you're going to need it. Also IMO you're going to have to redo that suspension as it will sag under the weight of the truck. Best of luck with this Quote

Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 (edited) you are saying that it is not common but that does not mean some trucks don't have them Actually it was a polite way to telli you that this kind of dump truck you build never have independent suspension... So it is not realistic at all! Edited August 31, 2016 by 2LegoOrNot2Lego... Quote
